Randomize test pages & lock discussions in Jan Ultra update

<Tagline>New option to create model essay response for graders</Tagline>

Test pagination was introduced to Ultra courses last year, creating new ways to present clusters of questions to students that focused on content or reduced cognitive load. In this month's update, test pagination can be randomized for academic integrity. The first page can be locked in place if the content contains test instructions. Additionally, if the Ultra test contains non-question elements, such as text blocks, these can also be locked in place while questions around them are randomized. When combined with question pools, this creates a truly unique testing experience for students.

Instructors can now lock discussions after the due date has passed, setting a discussion to read only. Students do not see the model answer when they take a test.

The January update also includes:

Modification to who can send Messages in a course:

Students can send messages to all instructors OR to selected course members.
Dec Ultra Update Features Improved Drag & Drop, Course Links

<Tagline>New report for student progress through course content</Tagline>

This month, Ultra updates bring improvements to drag and drop functionality to the course outline, allowing instructors to easily move and rearrange content. Keyboard commands can also be used to move content. Additionally, a new feature provides course links, or shortcuts, to course content on the main page, which helps highlight or promote important content. For example, use course links to encourage students to revisit an earlier activity to reinforce learning. Course links provide access to content without excessive scrolling and reduce clicking.

A significant improvement to the course copy tool expands the panel for identifying and selecting content from multiple courses and organizations. Instructors can easily search for course names or courseIDs, or page through their available courses. From there, they can select an entire course to copy, or drill down into courses to select folders or individual pieces of content to copy. Multiple content items from a variety of courses can be selected from one interface, reducing your time when preparing a course. Exclusive to Ultra.

Image 1: Example of new course copy interface

Additional enhancements to Ultra include:

Single Student Progress Report: If you'd like to gain more insight into the progress students are making in your course, this new report will help you see the path each student is taking in your course and engage early with students who may be falling behind, or adjust course content. The report lets you view the content you've created for students, the progress students have made (with time/date stamps), and the current visibility status of each item. Accessible from individual content or the gradebook, the report is only available if you have progress tracking enabled in the course. Exclusive to Ultra.

Image 2: Example of Single Student Progress Report

The December update includes:

Add descriptions to question banks, which are displayed with the title. You can also search the titles and descriptions to question banks.

Unsupported font colors are now removed during a content copy or course conversion from an Original course. Although Original Course View users can choose any color for text, content can be hard to read or not accessible — for example, yellow text on white background. The Ultra Course View has a curated selection of font colors to ensure readability (black, gray, purple, blue, and green).

Student Preview helps instructors experience their course contents and settings.
Ultra Tests Gain Hot Spot Questions & Pagination in November

<Tagline>New reports for course activity and student performance</Tagline>

Ultra assessments gain two new features in the November update including hot spot questions and pagination. Hot spot questions allow instructors to assess a student's knowledge of visual content, such as the parts of the skeletal structure in the human body. Assessment pagination provides a new way to organize and present related questions and content to students, allowing faculty to easily create robust test pages that focus on content or adapt the test presentation to reduce cognitive load. Pagination is exclusive to Ultra courses.

Image 1: Example of hot spot questions

Additional enhancements to Ultra include:

Course Activity Report: Instructors identify struggling students based on their performance and engagement within a course. The course activity page allows instructors to identify struggling students based on grade or time spent criteria and send a message to the student(s). Instructors can also receive alerts when a student has not accessed their course in a while or if their grade has dropped. The Course Activity Report replaces the Original course's Retention Center.

Image 2: Example of Course Activity Report

Student Grades Overview: This improvement to the Ultra gradebook view per student will now list any accommodations set by the instructor in the course and the student's username. Moreover, in addition to the grades for a particular student, instructors can view a Student Activity report, which shows how often and how long that student spends in their course.

Auto-Save Enhancements for Students: Blackboard further improved how students are informed about connectivity issues. Assessments will detect if a connection is lost. If this happens, students are warned. If the connection is not restored, another warning informs the student that their most recent progress is not saved. When the connection is restored, the system alerts the student and confirms that progress is saved. Exclusive to Ultra courses.

Image 3: Example of lost connection message

Additionally, the November update includes:

Improvements to the gradebook history tool expands data selection while providing increased information within the exported file.

Ultra will save the last view of the gradebook (list or grid) used by the instructor as default.

Faculty who use the Content Collection can now add that type of content directly to their Ultra Documents.

Unread message indicator specifically on courses and organizations where there are messages so it's easier to find that communication.

The next update to our Ultra test environment will take place on November 8, 2022.
Copy Rubrics Between Ultra Courses Starting in September

<Tagline>New features also focus on assessment & grading enhancements</Tagline>

In early September, Ultra courses will receive updates in several key areas that benefit instructors and students. Maintaining the trend focusing on assessment and grading, these updates also include increased support for test taking and grading feedback for students as well as a new alternative file format for Ally.

ASSESSMENT & GRADING

Copy Rubrics Between Ultra Courses - Reusing rubrics provides faculty with flexibility when designing and preparing courses each semester. Starting in early September, you can save time and easily copy rubrics between your Ultra courses. Use the Copy Content tool and select only the Rubrics folder to copy all rubrics, or click the Rubrics folder to select one or more specific rubrics to copy into your course.

Image: Example of copying rubrics between courses

As with all Copy Content functionality, you can copy Rubrics from multiple Blackboard courses at the same time. Rubrics will appear in the Gradebook under settings and can be easily attached to an assignment.

Sort Question Banks - Last month, question banks received significant improvements including creating and editing. With this update, you can sort question banks by name, number of questions, or last edited date.

Respond to Discussions From Grading - Instructors can now post a reply to student discussions within the context of the grading interface.

Set points for manually added grade items - When creating a manual grade column, instructors can edit the maximum point value regardless of how the grade is displayed to students.

Test Timer Notifications for students - It's important for students to be aware of how much time they have when taking a test, but sometimes this can be stressful. Ultra now provides multiple options, which can be reviewed in this FAQ.

Student Access to Instructor Feedback - Students will have access to grade feedback, regardless of how an instructor grades, including grade overrides.

Summary of Grading Annotations - A new side panel is available when providing inline feedback for student assignments. This panel summarizes all comments in one list, making it easier to view feedback in a student's submission. Note: This functionality will be rolled out over time, separately from the main updates in September.

CONTENT & ENGAGEMENT

Microsoft Immersive Reader for Ally - Ally now features a new alternative format to download. Microsoft Immersive Reader helps students improve their reading, comprehension, and grammar skills.

Prevent duplicative content of an entire course - Copying content within a course is an important feature to quickly deploy reusable structures.
