Spring Clean Your "My Courses" List in Blackboard

    <Tagline>Blackboard now supports term organization</Tagline>

Whether teaching or taking courses, after semesters of enrollments and access to Blackboard, the My Courses list can really stack up. While faculty and students can edit the listing to remove courses they do not want to see and resort the order, the list itself produces a huge block of text.

Term organization, however, provides a logical organizational structure for sorting courses by semester. <Tagline>Adaptive Release</Tagline>

Adaptive Release provides controls to release content to students based on a set of rules provided by the instructor. The rules may be related to availability, date and time, individual users and user groups (such as course Groups), scores or attempts on any Gradebook item, or review status of another item in the course. Using adaptive release can help instructors keep track of student progress in the course, and release content items as they see fit.

Examples of Adaptive Release

Apply review status criteria as the student progresses

Your course is divided into sections, each containing an overview, readings, and a quiz. You want content to be released as the student progresses through content and marks items as reviewed.

You want the overview to always be visible, so you apply no criteria.

You want the readings to be available after the overview has been reviewed, so you apply a review status rule to each of the readings, selecting the overview.

You want the quiz to be available after the final reading has been reviewed, so you apply a review status rule to the quiz, selecting that reading.

Apply date criteria as the term progresses

Your course is divided into three sections. You want the sections available on specific dates throughout the term.

You want the first section to always be visible, so you apply no criteria.

You want the second section to be available after February 1st, so you apply a date rule to each item in the section.

You want the third section to be available after March 1st, so you apply a date rule to each item in the section.

Apply grade criteria for remedial purposes

You created additional course material for remedial purposes.

You want the remedial material to be available to students who receive 65% or less on their midterm exams, so you apply a grade rule to the material based on this test score.

Best Practices

Since adaptive release allows distribution of content as the course progresses, unlike in the face-to-face environment, students do not see this process. Without a bit of explanation, they may be confused when items suddenly appear, or wonder why some students see different items than they do. No placeholder exists for items hidden due to adaptive release criteria. Students have no way of knowing where items may appear unless you tell them.

To eliminate such confusion, consider adding a statement to your course syllabus or getting started materials:

All students access content using the Course Documents link on the course menu. Some content is released based on the following rules:

Date criteria: Some content is assigned a default release date. On that date, it is available to all students.

Review status criteria: Students, who are progressing through course content quickly and marking the content as reviewed, see content before the default release date.

Membership criteria: For group projects, the class is divided into several groups. Different material is released to each group. You will not see content that another group sees.

Grade criteria: Students must receive 70% on each test before the next unit is released for viewing. Students who receive less than 70% on their tests can access additional review materials. After marking the additional materials as reviewed, the next unit is released for viewing.

Getting Started with Adaptive Release

To learn more about using Rubrics in Blackboard:

visit our Blackboard Adaptive Release FAQ page

open an RT Ticket for any technical issues

view the schedule of training workshops on the DoIT group page

contact the Instructional Technology Team with any questions or concerns

DoIT Recommends Course Copy vs Export/Import

  <Tagline>Beginning SU2015: Quickly recycle courses & connect content</Tagline>

Over many years, Blackboard courses at UMBC were exported out of and imported back into the system. This process met a specific need at a specific time, and continues to provide a way for faculty to save course materials in a digital archive. We are pleased, however, to soon launch Course Copy, a new tool to streamline the reuse and preparation of course content each semester.

The Course Copy tool is convenient way to reuse and adapt existing course structures, materials, and content. With a few clicks, faculty can identify the course to receive the incoming content, choose some or all course content, and trigger the copying process. Compared to export/import, the Course Copy process is faster. Faculty do not have to submit the export request in one Blackboard course, download a package file only to re-upload it to another course for processing. With the Course Copy process, no file is needed to download or upload.

Faculty can copy all or part of the content into a new course or an existing course. The Blackboard course copy tool will only add content to a course; it will never delete or overwrite existing content. This is a good way to copy part of one course into another without overwriting any of the existing course's content. For example, if an instructor just wants to copy Course Documents, she can select only that content area.

Best Practices for Recycling & Reusing Content

Plan on using Course Copy for the long term -- it is the preferred way among many institutions to recycle course content every semester.

Support for the Export tool will be gradually reduced. You should plan to only use the Export tool to create an archive for your records and then store the package in Box.

Request a master course shell to centralize all of your course's content and never lose a document, resource or learning object again!

Keeping those export packages can contribute to course bloat. We recommend that faculty delete packages from the course export page after downloading. Each package counts against the course quota and keeping packages may result in limited space to add additional content to the course.

Upcoming Training

The Course Copy tool, and several other new resources, will be available at the end of the SP2015 term for use during SU2015 and beyond. Two training sessions are planned:

Tuesday, April 28 (12-12:50 pm)

Tuesday, May 12 (1-1:50 pm)

To pre-register for either of these sessions, please select the linked session title and click the green "I Can Attend" button on the event page. We also recommend adding the workshop to your calendar.

Whether for a traditional, hybrid or online course, cultivating and maintaining the content in a course shell in Blackboard requires an investment of time and effort. Many faculty understandably want to preserve these resources and learning objects. The Course Copy tool provides a convenient and easy way.
