The UMBC Blackboard server will be down 7 AM Thurs 8/21
The UMBC Blackboard server will be down beginning at 7 AM on Thursday, 8/21. This downtime is outside of the regularly scheduled maintenance window but is necessary for DoIT staff to perform essential upgrades, including patches and fixes. Please be sure to save or submit any work before this time. Any unsaved or unsubmitted work will immediately be lost when the system shuts down.
After Blackboard is back online, please clear your Internet browser cache and cookies before logging in. Step-by-step instructions are on
https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/gIAcBb course shells for SU2014 were created on April 17, 2014 on the Bb production server at http://blackboard.umbc.edu. Enrollments for SU2014 courses will continue to be updated daily. Bb shells are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, field or discussion) listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC), provided that there is an instructor of record listed. The addition of new course sections and/or instructors will result in new Bb shells being automatically generated each morning. Student enrollment in Bb will continue to mirror the official registration in SA, and will update hourly.
If you are an instructor, and your name is not associated with the course you are teaching in the SOC, please see your departmental scheduling coordinator to get that issue resolved. Once you are listed in the SOC, your Bb course shell will be created automatically.
Note: Previously, in situations where one instructor was teaching multiple sections of the same course, by default all sections were combined into one Bb course shell. This also included sections of the same course taught in both Summer Session I and II. DoIT has addressed this Session I and Session II issue so there will be distinct shells for each if taught by the same instructor. But if you find this is not the case, and you want separate shells for Session I and II, please submit an RT ticket with your request. If you need a shell for a research or independent study course, please submit a new course request.

Known Issue: Missing Bb Modules Caused by Editing
DoIT recomends users not edit module settings
5/19/14 Update:
This issue is fixed in Service Pack (SP) 14 of version 9.1. We are on SP 13, but are unlikely to upgrade before January 2015 given overlapping dates when final grades are due and one semester starts or finishes.
In the meantime, DoIT has disabled module customization by users. We realize this will create or even "freeze" long lists of Bb courses for students and faculty who may have tried to
"remove" old courses by hiding them. A workaround for faculty trying to
export and
import old courses that may now be hidden is to use the
"Courses" Tab inside Blackboard that lists all courses.

Blackboard users who attempt to manage their module settings are reporting they are unable edit the modules and trying to do so results in all modules being removed from the given Blackboard tab.
This screencast illustrates how the issue impacts the interface of a user attempting to edit the My Courses module within the myBlackboard tab, and the thumbnail to the right provides an example of a Blackboard tab with missing modules.
DoIT is resetting the Blackboard tabs daily to address this issue. However, this is a manual fix and the problem will not be addressed on a system level until a future service-pack upgrade.
We recommend users not attempt to modify the default module settings because doing so will impact the Blackboard interface until DoIT runs the daily system maintenance.
- The WT2014 Bb server will be taken completely offline on Friday, 3/21.
- WT2013 courses will be restored on the UMBC Bb production server. We encourage you to download a copy of your grade center, and any other content that you might need to your local machine. If instructors have students finishing incomplete grades, and students must have continuing access to their WT2014 course over spring break, the instructors should put in an RT ticket request prior to Thursday, March 20.

To support faculty ongoing Blackboard support needs, DoIT will be offering additional weekly drop-in hours beginning Monday, February 24. A DoIT staff member will be available to work one-on-one with users who show up during the designated times.
Drop-In sessions will focus on one of the many tools we support, including the following:
Given variation in user needs and scheduling, the Drop-In format will be as follows:
- Orientation (5 minutes): A quick overview of what the tool does. If all you want is a demo, come early.
- Recommendations (10 minutes): 1-2 tips based on our observations from providing faculty support, as well identification of effective practices and practitioners.
- Q & A (40 minutes): This is your time. What do you want to know? What's a problem you'd like to solve or a new opportunity you'd like to explore?
In addition to the F2F sessions, DoIT will also offer virtual drop-in sessions using Blackboard's web-conferencing tool, Collaborate. DoIT Update on Recent Webmail, Blackboard Issues
Load Balancer "Root Cause" to be Reviewed This Semester
To the UMBC Campus Community,
Over the past 7-10 days, DoIT has been
troubleshooting technical issues with the Cyrus campus Webmail system and Blackboard. Initially, we saw these as separate issues, but have now determined the root cause to be a new network device, called a load balancer, that distributes demand among multiple servers that collectively make up these highly used systems. One complication was that while the issue with WebMail was widespread across those using it, the issue with Blackboard was mostly present when doing the more complex functions, normally done by administrators and instructors. As such, we missed the connection that the problem in Blackboard was related to the load balancer.
At approximately 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22, we decided to test the possibility that the issues in Blackboard might also be related to the load balancer and replaced the new load balancer with the former one it was replacing. To our knowledge, most of the issues (particularly exporting/importing courses in Bb and creating/importing assessments) appear to be resolved. If you believe this is not the case, please submit an RT (Request Tracker) ticket via the myUMBC help menu or directly at
my.umbc.edu/help.
Next Steps
DoIT needs to move to a new load balancer. The vendor no longer supports the original one and campus demand for technology systems has grown steadily. However, DoIT is working closely with the vendor to review these recent issues and will develop a plan for moving forward, but we won’t do anything until the semester has stabilized. For now, our focus is to make certain that highly used systems, such as Blackboard, are running properly for the start of Spring semester this Monday, January 27. Going forward, we will update the Campus IT Steering Committee and Faculty Computer Policy Committee on our findings and plans.
On behalf of my DoIT colleagues, I want to thank students, faculty and staff for their diligence in reporting issues and their patience while we worked to address them. We know these disruptions were inconvenient, and will work hard to improve our environment going forward.

We appear to be back to normal now.
1/21/14 Update
Spoke too soon. We're not seeing as many cases of export/import issues (#2 below), but we are still seeing issues creating tests & quizzes again (#1 below). We are working with Blackboard to address these issues.
Note: During today, you may find Bb slow or unavailable for short periods of time while we implement and test Bb's suggested fixes.
My apologies for this inconvenience and these back and forth updates. I will post more when we know more.

I'm pleased to announce that the
known issues of 1) creating Blackboard tests and 2) faculty export/import of past Bb courses into Spring 2014 course shells appear to be resolved.
Working with Blackboard, DoIT staff Jesse Beauman, Vladimir Plotkin and James Sonnichsen identified a configuration setting as the root cause, tested an alternate setting to isolate the errors, and then implemented a permanent fix. If any faculty are still experiencing problems with tests and exports/imports, please submit a Request Tracker (RT) ticket via the myUMBC help menu or directly at my.umbc.edu/help.
I know these issues have made it difficult for faculty to prepare for the Spring 2014 semester. On behalf of my DoIT colleagues, I want to say how much we appreciated the campus community's patience and understanding as we worked to resolve these issues. Hopefully, students, faculty and staff can now focus more understanding and using some
new features introduced in last week's

Reminder: Bb Upgrade Jan. 8-10, 2014
WT2014 Courses Now Available at bb-winter.umbc.edu
As previously announced, the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) will upgrade UMBC's production Blackboard system from January 8 to 10, 2014. Due to the disruption caused by the upgrade, Winter 2014 Bb courses are now available at bb-winter.umbc.edu. After the WT2014 semester is completed (and the SP2014 semester is started), Winter courses will be migrated to the new production Bb server, typically by the end of Spring Break.
Note: There will be no access to Bb Winter courses via myUMBC. Students and faculty must use
bb-winter.umbc.edu to access WT2014 courses

SP2014 Bb courses have also been created, but will be unavailable during the January 8-10 upgrade (as will Bb communities). After the upgrade, all but WT2014 Bb courses will be available at blackboard.umbc.edu or via
myUMBC.

WT2014 and SP2014 Bb Course Shells Created on 12/2
WT2014 Bb shells are located at http://bb-winter.umbc.edu
UMBC Blackboard (Bb) course shells for both SP2014 and WT2014 were created on December 2, 2013. The course shells for SP2014 are located on the Bb production server at http://blackboard.umbc.edu.
As previously announced at the start of this semester, due to the Bb upgrade January 8-10, all WT2014 courses will be run on a separate server at http://bb-winter.umbc.edu. All courses and organizations on the Bb production server will be unavailable during the upgrade from January 8-10. If you require any past Bb content for your WT2014 courses please make sure to export it prior to January 8, 2014.
Enrollments for both SP2014 and WT2014 courses will continue to be updated daily. Bb shells are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, field or discussion) listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC), provided that there is an instructor of record
listed. The addition of new course sections and instructors will result in new Bb shells being automatically generated each morning. Student enrollment in Bb will continue to mirror the official registration in
SA, and will update hourly.
If you are an instructor, and your name is not associated with the course you are teaching in the SOC, please see your departmental scheduling coordinator to get that issue resolved. Once you are listed in the SOC, your Bb course shell will be created and enrolled automatically.
Additionally, in situations where one instructor is teaching multiple sections of the same course, by default all sections will be combined into one Bb course shell. If you want to have separate shells for different sections, or if you need a shell for for a research or independent study course, please submit a new course request or submit an RT ticket with your request.
As a reminder, all Bb course shells are initially unavailable to students until the instructor makes it available.
