A new phishing scam is attempting to fool people into providing personal information by claiming that there is a Blackboard notification waiting for them, and provides a link for logging into Blackboard. Do not click this link.

Blackboard email notifications do not require you to sign in to Blackboard to read them, the information is provided in the email itself.  Always visit http://my.umbc.edu directly to log into Blackboard or by typing it in the address bar, or using your own bookmarks/favorites.

Bb shells are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, or discussion) listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC), provided that there was an instructor of recordlisted. The addition of new course sections and instructors will result in new Bb shells being automatically generated each morning. In accordance with the Blackboard Course Retention Policy, all Blackboard courses older than  Fall 2007 will be deleted. DoIT has scheduled this removal for Friday, August 23, 2013. 

Instructors are encouraged to download and keep a copy of the Grade Center for any affected courses. Instructors may also archive an entire course, and keep a local copy for their records. Be aware though that only DoIT system administrators can "restore" an archived course on the UMBC Blackboard production server.

After the WT2014 semester is completed (and the SP2014 semester is started), Winter courses will be migrated to the new production Bb server, typically by the end of Spring Break.

Currently, we are running version 9.1.9 and plan to upgrade to version 9.1.13 (depending on what version is available in October when the Winter server is built). In addition to staying current with Bb's latest release, the latest version of Bb will give us access to several new features that include the following:



Before the upgrade, anyone can see how these features look and function now by trying out a demo instance on the free coursesites.blackboard.com:



After the upgrade, DoIT will provide face-to-face and online "Bb Drop In" sessions. We also are very willing to support cohort-based training for departments that can assure a minimum of four (4) faculty and/or staff will be present (dates & times TBD). Bb course shells for SU2013 were created on April 14, 2013 on the Bb production server at http://blackboard.umbc.edu.  Enrollments for SU2013 courses will continue to be updated daily. Bb shells are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, field or discussion) listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC), provided that there is an instructor of record listed. The addition of new course sections and/or instructors will result in new Bb shells being automatically generated each morning. Student enrollment in Bb will continue to mirror the official registration in SA, and will update hourly.

If you are an instructor, and your name is not associated with the course you are teaching in the SOC, please see your departmental scheduling coordinator to get that issue resolved. Once you are listed in the SOC, your Bb course shell will be created automatically.

Additionally in situations where one instructor is teaching multiple sections of the same course, by default all sections will be combined into one Bb course shell. This also includes sections of the same course taught in both Summer Session I and II. If you want to have separate shells for different sections, or separate shells for Summer Session I and II, please  submit an RT ticket with your request. If you need a shell for for a research or independent study course, please submit a new course request.

Face to Face Sessions:

The following F2F sessions will be held in ENGR 025.  A DoIT staff member will be available to work one-on-one with users who show up during the designated times.  Please note that this is not a formal Blackboard training class.  Users may show up or leave at any point during these sessions. Additional dates and times may be added as demand warrants.
