I work in DoIT's Department of Cybersecurity Assurance and Digital Trust. As a computer science major in my final semester and a minor in philosophy, my academic journey has been diverse and enriching. In this video, I will share my experiences working at DoIT, my career aspirations, and advice for fellow students navigating their way through the academic and professional sectors.

Discovering Cyber Security

My Journey in Computer Science

Beginning my final semester as a senior, my focus is on completing the cybersecurity track. The journey through my computer science major has been a transformative experience, equipping me with theoretical knowledge and practical skills. As cybersecurity continues to evolve, my curriculum has merged foundational concepts with the latest trends and technologies, preparing me for the challenges in the digital trust landscape.

Joining DoIT

In August last year, I started working in DoIT's Department of Cybersecurity Assurance and Digital Trust. This opportunity has been instrumental in my growth, allowing me to experiment and learn in a supportive environment. The managers and colleagues at DoIT have been encouraging, sharing their wisdom, and providing guidance throughout my internship. This supportive network has enhanced my confidence in my chosen career path.

Gaining Confidence through Analyst Work

Analyzing cybersecurity risks and ensuring digital trust for DoIT's clients have given me a clearer perspective on my career goals. The practical experience gained through these tasks has not only solidified my understanding of cybersecurity principles but also built my confidence in pursuing this field in the future. The work is challenging yet rewarding, reinforcing my passion for contributing to this industry.

The Importance of Community

Giving Back

One of my core values is giving back to the communities that have supported me. Whether it's through my coursework, professional engagements, or personal endeavors, I find immense satisfaction in contributing positively. The projects I work on at DoIT resonate deeply with this value, offering opportunities to make meaningful impacts while ensuring digital interactions' security and trustworthiness.

Lunch and Learns

Among my favorite memories at DoIT are the Lunch & Learn sessions held monthly. These relaxed gatherings are perfect opportunities to connect with co-workers, both students and full-time staff. It is during these sessions that friendships are forged, ideas are exchanged, and a sense of camaraderie is cultivated. Lunch & Learns underscore the importance of taking time to build relationships in a professional setting.

The CyberDawgs Community

Another significant community in my life is the CyberDawgs, a group of passionate students dedicated to cybersecurity. Being president of CyberDawgs for the last two years has been one of the most engaging experiences of my life. This role has not only honed my leadership skills but also allowed me to witness the growth of my peers as they develop their skills and relationships. CyberDawgs has been a cornerstone in my personal and professional development, offering a collaborative space to explore and grow alongside like-minded individuals.

Advice for Students

1) Asking Questions

If I had to give advice to someone just starting out at DoIT or navigating their academic journey, it would be to always ask questions. In an environment that fosters growth and learning, curiosity is a driving force. Embrace the challenges, seek clarification, and learn from those around you. Every question asked is an opportunity to deepen your understanding and enhance your skills.

2) Embracing the Community Aspect

The community aspect of UMBC has been one of the most enjoyable parts of my academic experience. The sense of belonging, the mutual support, and the collaborative spirit are invaluable as you progress through your studies. Engaging with peers, participating in clubs, and immersing yourself in campus activities enrich your university life in ways beyond the classroom.

3) Finding Your Passion

To incoming students, my advice is to find what you're passionate about and actively seek out opportunities related to that interest. Join clubs, participate in events, and connect with people who share your enthusiasm. There is a place for everyone at UMBC, and finding your niche not only enhances your academic experience but also opens doors for personal and professional growth.

Conclusion

My journey through computer science and cybersecurity, fueled by a supportive community and enriching professional engagements, has been incredibly rewarding. Working at DoIT has solidified my career aspirations, while the CyberDawgs community has fostered my passion for cybersecurity. As I move forward in my career and life, the lessons learned, the relationships built, and the experiences gained will continue to guide and inspire me. For those embarking on similar paths, remember to stay curious, embrace community, and pursue your passions wholeheartedly. There is immense potential within each of you, waiting to be unlocked through dedication and engagement.

Shout-Out!

William will be graduating in May 2025 from UMBC, with a BS in Computer Science and a minor in Philosophy. Congratulations William!

Watch his complete video here!

The first draft of the above announcement was generated using GenAI and edited by the Division of Information Technology Communications and IT teams.

Follow Anna Plass's journey in information systems and cybersecurity in the Division of Information Technology (DoIT), discovering the importance of professional skills, teamwork, and continuous learning in the field.

My Journey in Information Systems and Cybersecurity Assurance

Hello everyone, I’m Anna Plass, a senior currently advancing my education in Information Systems with a minor in Computer Science. I am also working in Cybersecurity Assurance and Digital Trust, focusing on safeguarding systems and data within a corporate environment. Through my experiences, I've developed a unique perspective on what it takes to thrive in this dynamic and ever-evolving field.

Starting Point: Joining DoIT

I embarked on my journey with DoIT in June 2024, a decision that marked the start of an exciting chapter in my educational and professional development. At DoIT, I've been fortunate to engage with numerous projects, particularly those that make extensive use of our various security tools.

The Puzzle of Cybersecurity

One of the most exhilarating aspects of working in cybersecurity is the investigative nature of the job. Often, you only have fragments of a story, and your task is to find the missing pieces and fit them together like a puzzle. This detective work keeps the job fascinating, as every day presents a new challenge or mystery to solve, ensuring that no two days are ever the same.

Professional Growth

Communication Skills

Working at DoIT has significantly impacted my future, offering me innumerable opportunities to hone essential professional skills. One of the key areas of growth has been in communication across different departments. Effective communication is critical in cybersecurity, as it ensures that everyone is on the same page regarding security protocols and threat assessments.

Technical Writing

Likewise, technical writing is another skill I’ve sharpened during my time here. Being able to document processes, write reports, and create clear instructions is vital in cybersecurity assurance. DoIT has provided a robust platform for me to develop these skills.

Time Management

Time management, often overlooked, is crucial in this field. Balancing multiple responsibilities, ensuring the timely completion of tasks, and effectively prioritizing work are all skills I’ve developed through my projects at DoIT.

Creating Memories

Apart from the professional growth, my time at DoIT has also been about creating memories with my colleagues. One of the most enjoyable traditions we've maintained involves getting lunch together frequently during summer and winter breaks. These moments away from the office foster a sense of camaraderie and bond us as a team, making the work environment supportive and enjoyable.

Advice for New Students

For any new student joining DoIT, my advice is simple: never be afraid to ask questions. When you first join, it’s likely you won't have extensive experience in the field. Recognize that you are in a learning phase, and the full-time staff are there to help you gain these essential skills and experiences. Asking questions enables you to understand better and perform your duties more effectively.

Looking Forward

As I look to the future, I plan on staying with DoIT over the summer. This extended period will allow me to thoroughly explore various job opportunities in cybersecurity. The additional time at DoIT will not only bolster my experience but also provide more chances to refine my skills further before stepping out into the broader job market.

Concluding Thoughts

Working at DoIT has been an incredibly rewarding experience, providing me with a solid foundation in cybersecurity. The skills I've developed, the puzzles I've solved, and the bonds I've formed will undoubtedly serve me well as I continue to pursue my passion for cybersecurity. I look forward to applying these experiences to future opportunities and continuing to grow within this thrilling and essential field.

Shout-out from DoIT!

Next on her journey, Anna will be graduating in May 2025 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, with a BS in Information Systems and a minor in Computer Science. Congratulations Anna!

Watch her complete video here!

The first draft of the above announcement was generated using AI and edited by the Division of Information Technology Communications and IT teams.

Joshua Cheeks, a senior computer science major at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), is a testament to this fact. His journey through academia, coupled with his role at the Division of Information Technology (DoIT), exemplifies how university experiences can profoundly shape one's career trajectory and personal development.

Joining the AV Department

Joshua Cheeks’s time at UMBC has been complemented by his work at the AV department under DoIT. For close to two years, he has immersed himself in the daily operations that keep the department running smoothly. This position has not only allowed him to apply his computer science knowledge in practical settings but has also rendered every day an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Building Meaningful Connections

One of the most impactful aspects of Joshua's journey has been the relationships he has built during his time at DoIT. He emphasizes the importance of these connections, stating that the friends and networks he has established with both his co-workers and superiors have had a significant positive impact on his life. These relationships have not only made his work environment more enjoyable but also extended beyond professional boundaries, fostering personal growth and development.

Team Bonding Moments

In recounting his experiences, Joshua highlights a fond memory: his team watching a movie in PAHB 132 after completing a project. Such moments of camaraderie underscore the importance of teamwork and the bonds formed in the collaborative efforts required in the AV department.

Advice for New Employees

Joshua has valuable advice for newcomers to the DoIT student workforce. He encourages them to engage actively with their colleagues and supervisors. Making connections, he notes, is crucial as these relationships can be beneficial in the future. The friendly and approachable environment at DoIT, according to him, is conducive to fostering these exchanges.

Pursuing Higher Education

Looking ahead, Joshua aspires to further his education by pursuing a master's degree in cybersecurity. This advanced study will equip him with the specialized knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the cybersecurity landscape.

Career Goals

Joshua’s ultimate career goal is to become a Security Operations Center (SOC) analyst in the cybersecurity field. This role involves monitoring and analyzing an organization's security systems to detect and mitigate threats. It is a critical position within the cybersecurity domain, requiring a keen eye for detail, analytical skills, and a deep understanding of cyber threats and defense mechanisms.

The Impact of UMBC and DoIT

Personal and Professional Growth: Joshua attributes much of his personal and professional growth to his time at UMBC and his involvement with DoIT. The university environment has challenged him to become a better person and a more diligent worker, pushing him to strive for excellence in all his endeavors.

Networking Opportunities: The connections he has formed with a diverse group of individuals, from fellow students to faculty and staff at DoIT, have broadened his perspective and provided him with a supportive network that he can rely on as he advances in his career.

Skill Development:His responsibilities at the AV department have allowed Joshua to develop a range of skills that are directly applicable to his future career goals. From technical proficiencies in managing audio-visual equipment to soft skills like effective communication and teamwork, Joshua has gained a holistic set of competencies that will serve him well in his future roles.

Joshua Cheeks’s journey at UMBC and the Division of Information Technology is a prime example of how university experiences can play a pivotal role in shaping one's career and personal development. His story illustrates the value of seizing opportunities, building meaningful relationships, and continually striving for growth. As Joshua looks to the future, with aspirations of becoming a SOC analyst and obtaining a master's degree in cybersecurity, it is evident that the foundations laid during his time at UMBC and DoIT will continue to support and guide him.

Next on his journey, Josh will be graduating in May 2025 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, with a BS in Computer Science. Congratulations Joshua!

Watch his complete video here!

But what if we turned this perspective around and looked at it through the lens of a fulfilling, community-driven adventure? Sydney Kumordzie's narrative provides a refreshing take on what it feels like to grow and thrive in the IT industry, especially through the supportive environment in the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) and his invaluable experiences at AV Services.

A Family-like Work Environment

One of the foremost aspects Sydney highlights about his journey is the family-like atmosphere he encountered. Working in AV Services made him feel like part of a big family—co-workers felt more like friends, and every day brought opportunities to collaborate and create memories together. This relational warmth isn't something one typically expects from a career in IT, which is often thought to be a solitary and intensely focused field. However, Sydney’s experience shatters that stereotype.

The Importance of Mentorship

Mentorship played a pivotal role in Sydney’s developmental journey. He emphasizes how his mentors provided invaluable guidance, which helped him navigate the often-complex landscape of computer science and IT services. This guidance wasn't merely about technical skills but also about fostering the right mindset and setting career goals.

Gaining Diverse Experiences

Sydney didn’t confine himself to a single niche within the IT domain. His time working in different roles within AV Services was crucial for gaining a broad understanding of the field. He worked in PowerShell scripting and student administration in addition to AV Services, allowing him to develop a well-rounded skill set.

Versatility in Roles

Starting in student administration and managing accounts provided Sydney with essential back-end skills. This experience taught him the importance of proper data management and security, as he had to handle sensitive information and ensure its security.

Switching to AV Services introduced Sydney to the "person-to-person" aspect of IT. Here, the focus was not just on the technicality but also on user interaction and troubleshooting in real-time scenarios. It helped him develop strong communication skills and the ability to work efficiently under pressure.

Building Personal Connections

According to Sydney, making friends and building connections are crucial elements often overlooked in a professional setting. He advises his peers to go beyond merely fulfilling job responsibilities.

Breaking the Routine

Sydney shares a cherished memory that epitomizes the joy of breaking routine to build camaraderie. After finishing work early in Lecture Hall 1, he and his colleagues decided to put on some music and have an impromptu rap session. This moment wasn’t just about taking a break; it was about enjoying shared experiences and building a supportive environment where everyone felt comfortable and valued.

Tips for Future IT Professionals

Sydney’s story isn’t just a walk down memory lane; it’s a treasure trove of insights for future IT professionals. he offers practical advice for anyone looking to follow a similar path:

1. Engaging with Mentors: One of his top tips is to actively engage with your mentors. They are a treasure of knowledge and experience that can help you avoid common pitfalls and make intelligent career choices.

2. Proactive Involvement: He encourages newcomers to proactively involve themselves in various roles. This involvement isn't just about doing your job well; it’s about making meaningful connections and gaining a comprehensive understanding of the industry.

3. Building Friendships: Perhaps most importantly, Sydney emphasizes the value of making friends in the workplace. These connections can enrich your professional life, providing emotional support and possibly even opening doors for future opportunities. Sydney believes that these friendships can go a long way, and looking at his journey, it’s easy to see why.

Sydney Kumordzie's experience in AV Services showcases a multi-faceted, community-enriched journey that stands as a glowing example for aspirants in the IT industry. His path, enriched with diverse roles, robust mentorship, and invaluable friendships, offers a blueprint on how to not just survive but thrive in this field. Sydney’s story is an inspiring reminder that the IT industry is not just about technical proficiency but also about growing as a well-rounded individual. It’s about embracing a supportive community, enjoying the journey, and cherishing the moments that make the experience so rewarding.

Next on his journey, Sydney will be graduating in May 2025 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, with a BS in Computer Science. Congratulations Sydney!

Watch his complete video here!

The first draft of the above announcement was generated using AI and edited by the Division of Information Technology Communications and IT teams.
