Windows 10 Free Upgrade for Personal Machines Ends July 29th

<Tagline>Upgrade for free otherwise pay $120 license for home version</Tagline>

DoIT would like the UMBC community to know that Microsoft's deadline for a free upgrade to Windows 10 is ending on July 29th, 2016. If you are running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 and do not take advantage of this offer, the upgrade will cost $119 after.

Please note that this recommendation applies to students, faculty, and staff personal machines. In Summer 2016, all DoIT controlled computer labs will be upgraded to Windows 10 Education. DoIT does officially support Windows 10 and will be happy to upgrade faculty and staff UMBC owned machines as requested. Windows 10 also has support for Eduroam & MATLAB.

Bryan Roper, Executive Demo Lead for Microsoft, gave 10 reasons why you should upgrade. Roper mentioned that Windows 10 has the highest customer satisfaction rate of any version of Windows ever.

By upgrading now, you can get live tiles that display tidbits of information without the need to open an app. There are also more games and apps on Windows 10 such as Minecraft, Netflix, and Adobe Photoshop Express. The security of Windows 10 is also improved, and if your device supports a fingerprint reader you can sign into it using Windows Hello

Windows 10 screenshot. Here you can see the live tiles in action, along with a familiar Windows UI.

The other advantage of upgrading now is you will get all future Windows 10 updates for free. This includes the upcoming summer update titled Anniversary Update which includes improvements to Cortana, Microsoft’s digital personal assistant similar to Apple’s Siri.

You can check out some guides on upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10, or how to upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.

Major changes to Instructional Web Environment for Fall 2016

In Fall 2016, DoIT will be making significant changes to the userpages web environment. We will be creating a new Student Web Environment and there will be an upgraded server using newer versions of critical applications such as PHP, apache, python and other software tools faculty have requested. Staff, faculty and alumni pages from userpages will be moved to a virtual box where they can be continued to be accessed with the existing URLs they use today.

This transition is part of DoIT’s ongoing commitment to security and stability. The current web environment has aging hardware that is prone to failure. By upgrading now, DoIT will be able to provide much more powerful and easier to use interface for instructional needs. This new box will be updated regularly allowing to be more versatile with better software and security offerings.

Users who have web directories on userpages for non-instructional use will be transitioned to a new server that will be able to host their existing content. On the new Student Web Environment, individual users will still need to activate their site, but this will now feature a more automated process. In addition, before each new academic year the directory that will be web accessible will change so that older content is no longer accessible to help with security. For example in 2016 the publically reachable directory will be swe2016 instead of the existing “pub/www” space that is currently used.

As a result, DoIT will be transitioning off userpages.umbc.edu for all instructional web development after this semester. DoIT will work with faculty, staff and students in assisting with migration of non instructional user pages.

If faculty are actively using userpages and would like to be part of the shaping of the new environment please contact Damian Doyle, Director of Enterprise Infrastructure at damian@umbc.edu

Here are 3 reasons why you should be using eduroam instead of UMBC Campus:

1. Quick and easy: Damian Doyle, Director of Enterprise Infrastructure and Support, thinks eduroam is great for everyone. When asked about the main advantages, he said “eduroam can remember your login information allowing your device to automatically connect to the wireless network.” Setup for eduroam usually takes less than 5 minutes and once set up, your computer will automatically join to the network when on campus.

Remember when setting up to use your entire username, so instead of ‘damian’ in the username field, you would use damian@umbc.edu

Example of logging into Eduroam on Mac OS X. Make sure to include the @umbc.edu part in the username field.

2. Security: Eduroam provides a higher level of security than conventional, unencrypted wireless. When using eduroam, all traffic between their devices and the wireless access point is encrypted using WPA2 providing another reason everyone should switch to eduroam sooner rather than later.

          3. Availability: Originally developed in Europe, eduroam also supports people in higher education using wireless networks at other higher education institutions. Eduroam has expanded beyond the 1900 institutions using it in Europe to include over 30 countries such as Australia, Canada, and the United States. So any UMBC student, faculty or staff member traveling abroad can use their UMBC email address and password to access WiFi around the world. In Maryland, UMCP, Loyola, University of Baltimore, and JHU have implemented eduroam and you can use their WiFi when visiting those campus.

Connecting to eduroam is fairly straightforward, but if you require more assistance you can check out DoITs extensive FAQs on eduroam.

How a DoIT Student Employee Helped Bring TechFest to UMBC

<Tagline>An idea to bring the campus together through technology</Tagline>

On Wednesday, March 9th DoIT’s Instructional Technology team sponsored a brand new event, known as TechFest. Located across three different rooms in the University Center and featuring over 10 presenters, including DoIT’s own Jack Suess and his presentation on tips for getting your inbox to zero.

Techfest was a great success and brought the UMBC campus community together to present ways that technology can both support and improve the efficiency of day-to-day activities. Before that, TechFest was just an idea with Collin Sullivan, a freshman Information Systems and Economics major.

“You usually have some sort of IT Professional that teaches the technology…”

TechFest came from an idea Sullivan had when he was a senior in high school, interning for the Howard County Public School System. He felt that technology was being limited to just professionals and wanted to expand it. Sullivan said, “You usually have some sort of IT professional that teaches the technology, and that's pretty much it.”

Technology can be exciting and fun, and Sullivan wanted to capture that. Instead of having just professionals, why not get different community members? Techfest featured many members from the UMBC community, with students, faculty, and staff all attending.

Not everyone presenting was a DoIT employee either, as TechFest featured students hosting their own panels as well as individuals from the Career Center. Combine that with talking to people with different backgrounds at your seats, TechFest was diverse and welcoming to everyone.

Picking the workshop tools were based on a survey that was sent out through the Instructional Technology group’s myUMBC page. From there, the team determined who was interested in presenting and asked themselves what tools they would want to see, along with what tools people who took the survey wanted to see. The most popular sessions would be placed during free hour.

“I was excited about the tools I was talking about.”

Sullivan himself was presenting two back to back sessions on Apple’s iCloud and Microsoft’s OneNote. “It was insanely stressful,” Sullivan said, “but I had a lot of fun. I was excited about the tools I was talking about.” These were interactive sessions where he would create assignments for the attendees to perform.

These two tools are what Sullivan uses himself on a day-to-day basis while at UMBC. Using Microsoft’s OneNote, Sullivan can take detailed notes in his classes and then share them with his classmates. OneNote doesn't strictly have to be for students, but rather everyone can integrate it into their lives. Sullivan said, “I envision faculty and staff using OneNote in meetings, it’s really really helpful.”

An example of Collin’s notes for his classes, all taken in OneNote.

“I don’t want anyone to be afraid of the cloud,”

Apple’s iCloud can make you more productive, and Sullivan wanted to capture that. During his iCloud session, he walked participants through the new opportunities that iCloud brings. He also answered questions anyone had surrounding iCloud. “I don’t want anyone to be afraid of the cloud.” Sullivan said, “It’s getting that stigma away from the cloud.”

While TechFest was a success, Sullivan is already in the stages of planning another TechFest for next Fall, TechFest 2. “We’re already having some preliminary discussions to what it would look like.” Sullivan said. One of the big things that will change is the session break time, as there were only five minute intervals between each session, and increasing the duration of each individual session as well.

Other than TechFest, Sullivan is also serving as a senator for the SGA and oversees various initiatives. “TechFest [2] is definitely on my mind.” Sullivan said, “I want to keep pushing for OneNote. This isn't the last hoorah.”

You can check out how to download OneNote and other Microsoft Office tools here
