<Tagline>Upload files from anywhere on UMBC to Pharos print stations</Tagline>

Faculty, staff, and students can now print from their own devices using Pharos Mobile Printing. Previously, in order to print an image or document, users would have to log on into a computer, pull up their file, and then go to a print release station. With Pharos, users can print from a multitude of supported devices, including Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. Funds for Pharos printing comes straight from your Campus Card Account.

For Mac and Windows users, you can access Pharos by going to mobileprint.umbc.edu From there, simply login using your UMBC credentials and you will be brought to the Pharos mobile printing interface.

Now you can upload your files, preview your print jobs, and even customize color pages and choose double or single sided pages. After that, just go to any Pharos station in the Library or in the Engineering building and swipe your Campus ID Card at the printer to print the files you have uploaded.

On iOS, users can follow the same steps as the Mac and Windows version by going to mobileprint.umbc.edu on their iOS device. Users can also visit the App store and download the Pharos Print app.

After downloading, launch the app and type in mobileprint.umbc.edu for the "Server Address" and 443 for "Server Port" and press "Connect". Then, type your UMBC credentials and log in. Wherever your file is located, you will need to select the “Open In” function and then select “Open in Pharos Print” which will open a window with details on the file and print options.
Planned DoIT Upgrades for Fine Arts Renovation

<Tagline>New technology improves accessibility for faculty & students</Tagline>

Between Fall 2015 and Spring 2016, DoIT AV Services is taking the opportunity during the Fine Arts Building renovation to upgrade both seminar and classrooms. Between now and Spring 2016, 26 rooms will have brand new technology making it the largest single project in DoIT AV Services history to be completed in-house.

Classrooms and seminar rooms will feature high resolution HD projectors or flat panel monitors. Some rooms will be equipped with the latest interactive projectors with finger touch interaction and electronic annotation.

In addition, assistive listening features will be integrated in select classrooms. This will allow professors to wear a microphone and transmit their voice throughout the room. Students who need assistive listening have an earbud with receiver that transmits the sound directly to them so they can sit anywhere in the class. All AV room controls will also have braille or audio feedback.

Active learning classrooms will no longer tether students and faculty to wires to present their content, and will introduce a new wireless solution. A small device that will be ethernet connected will be capable of displaying up to four screens at once from a laptop or smart device and will allow markup on each displayed screen.

It’s simple to join as well, simply by going to a network address and then joining with a 4-digit passcode. David Toothe, Assistant Director for DoIT, said “This is basically an airplay device for all systems, but rather than showing one person's content this allows the content from multiple people to be displayed at once."

“This is the largest undertaking in our history.” Toothe said, “We’re taking the opportunity to install newer technology that will add a new level of accessibility and flexibility for students & faculty.”

New Bb Upgrade Planned for WT2016

    <Tagline>Benefits include improved Java-free Collaborate</Tagline>

To continue our managed hosting from Blackboard and access new functionality, UMBC’s Blackboard server will need to be upgraded in late December after the fall semester ends. Apart from ensuring UMBC is using the most recent and supported version of Blackboard, the upgrade will allow us to implement the new Collaborate.

The new version of Collaborate uses the Chrome web browser rather than Java to deliver a superior audio and video experience. Faculty can test drive the new Collaborate now by opening an RT ticket.

DoIT will provide more updates about during the Fall semester, but we wanted to let the campus know now. If you have any questions, contact Mariann Hawken at mariannhawken@umbc.edu or 410.455.2920.

Kudos to David Sylva for Receiving Employee of the Quarter

DoIT would like to recognize its own David Sylva for receiving the Employee of the Quarter award (EOQ). The EOQ program recognizes the outstanding qualities and contributions of employees towards departmental and UMBC’s goals and mission. Sylva was presented his award at a surprise “meeting” on July 21, 2015.

In order to be eligible for the award, you must have been been employed at UMBC for 2 years and have made contributions to your department. Sylva began his career at UMBC in 2004 as a specialist for DoIT and has maintained his position to this day and has made several contributions with the most recent one bringing electronic time sheets to UMBC.

David was the technical lead for the new electronic time sheets. This enhancement was rolled out with few issues due in part to his diligence in meeting with the Payroll preparers the first pay cycle to walk them through the new processes.

Lisa Drouillard, Director of Payroll, said “[David] has a positive attitude and is willing to help in any way he can. He has been instrumental in the electronic time sheet implementation and we greatly appreciate his hard work.”

Sylva is continuing to enhance the electronic time sheet process by developing an interface with the time clock system, so that departments that use the time clock system can automatically interface that time to PeopleSoft, creating big efficiency gains.

There are several perks for receiving the EOQ award, a check for $500, a special employee parking space, one day of administrative leave, a certificate, his name on a plaque located on the fifth floor of the Administration building, and an invitation to the annual Service Award Ceremony for all the recipients of the quarterly award. Sylva however declined the check for $500 as he regularly donates to the UMBC Foundation.

When not working at UMBC, Sylva volunteers at his daughter’s school and works on improving his IT skills.

When: Weekly, Friday mornings, 2 AM - 6 AM

    Why: Routine data center maintenance

What happens: No downtime. In a rare scenario, users could notice minor connectivity issues. We advise students to save their work frequently and avoid taking tests if possible.

When: Monthly, Saturday mornings, 2 AM - 5 AM

Why: Updates to core tools and services as required by Blackboard

The UMBC Blackboard team makes every effort to identify a day and time period that should have the least impact on our users.
During the Spring semester, UMBC's Blackboard site benefited from a 99.99% uptime. Planning ahead with routine application updates and server check-ups helps maintain our Blackboard site. We appreciate your patience as we continue to improve our systems to bring you a better Blackboard experience.
