Academic Building Wireless Connectivity Issues

<Tagline>Wireless issues will be fixed on Sunday between 8pm-10pm</Tagline>

DoIT has been made aware of two problems in the academic building wireless system that may be impacting users’ ability to connect. The new Residence Hall Wi-Fi has not been impacted.

The Issues:

Wireless users may not be able to connect or may experience poor performance in large classrooms with many students

Students who connect to eduroam or UMBC Visitor within the Residential network and then attempt to connect to the same wireless network within an academic building may experience delayed connection times or fail to connect

The Solution:

On Sunday, September 8th, between 8 P.M. - 10 P.M., DoIT will be implementing an upgrade to the system to address both problems. During this timeframe, users in the academic building wireless network may see short disruptions in service. This work will not impact wireless service in the Residential network.

These issues were first discovered as a result of support requests that were submitted by faculty and students, which upon investigation, appear to be affecting a broader portion of the campus.

While DoIT will be closely monitoring the wireless system early next week we would greatly appreciate anyone who believes to be experiencing a wireless issue to submit a ticket through our Technology Support Center.

    <Tagline>New Eduroam Certificate Update</Tagline>

On Monday, August 19th, DoIT updated the certificate for the eduroam Wi-Fi network at UMBC to enhance security and privacy. This certificate must be updated annually.

If you see a message on your device asking you to verify or trust the certificate before connecting, or an error message about connecting to eduroam, then you should be able to fix those by using our eduroam setup guide to configure your device for eduroam. That process takes about a minute, and afterwards you shouldn't see alerts about subsequent certificate updates. Your device should connect automatically to the eduroam network while at UMBC, or at any other eduroam-supporting institution. You will need to repeat the process whenever you change your MyUMBC password.

Our setup guide has detailed instructions for common types of devices. If you have questions or need assistance getting connected or reconnected to eduroam, please contact the Technology Support Center (TSC) at 410-455-3838 or submit a ticket at help.umbc.edu.

DoIT Welcomes New Director of Communications, Erica D’Eramo!

We are thrilled to announce that Erica D'Eramo is joining us as the new Director of Communications and Outreach for DoIT and will report to Jack Suess, VP of IT. Erica comes to us from the Center for Women in Technology (CWIT), where she has served as the Assistant Director since 2016.

Erica brings a wealth of knowledge in communications and an undeniable commitment to student success. During her time in CWIT, she redesigned their marketing and communications plans to great success, and many of them have now been adopted by other university programs as a blueprint to increase their outreach efforts. Her expertise in strategic communication planning, stakeholder engagement, and designing interactive training and events will help DoIT to strengthen our services and communications to the campus community.

Erica is dedicated to student success and has directed recruitment efforts, collaborated with internal and external partners, and created engaging curricula focused on leadership, social justice, and professional development with CWIT. An experienced mentor herself, she developed and marketed the CWIT Faculty Mentoring Program and Culturally Responsive Mentoring, and has planned the K-12 CWIT programs and Scholar Selection Day. Outside of CWIT, she has taught First Year Experience courses and various practicum courses and serves on the USM Women’s Forum.

Erica will support DoIT and the Maryland Institute for Innovative Computing (MIIC) student workforce development efforts in information technology. Presently, between MIIC and DoIT, we are working with approximately 150 students a year, which we hope to continue to grow over the next few years. Erica will build on the work now being done to mentor and develop students.

Her experience in fostering strong relationships with campus partners is a tremendous asset to us. We officially welcomed Erica to DoIT on August 12th!

YouTube change impacts ad blockers, increases ads on 8/1

Starting August 1, 2024, Google will implement changes that impact ad blocking tools in Chrome and how YouTube videos are viewed. Chrome no longer supports tools that block ads, including third-party extensions, and has developed technology to inject ads into the videos themselves to bypass ad-blocking tools.

Additionally, a new policy from Google will increase the frequency of advertisements displayed on any embedded video, which includes pre-roll, mid-roll, and post-roll ads (Gore, 2024). While switching to non-Google browsers may offer some relief, YouTube could run slower, show blacked-out screens in place of ads, or still display ads.

Options for sharing video

1) For content hosted by YouTube, including content not owned by a UMBC account holder, please allow additional time for advertising when viewing videos.

2) For content created and owned by the instructor or UMBC account holder, Panopto may be a viable option where advertising is not desired. Copyrighted content may not be uploaded to UMBC’s Panopto service.

3) YouTube video links may be inserted into Panopto content. The video is not uploaded to Panopto but rather played through the Panopto platform, which has the benefit of suppressing advertising. In this scenario, an instructor might create an introduction using Panopto or a 1-second overlay screen, and then start the YouTube video.

For additional information about using Panopto at UMBC, please review our FAQ collection or open an RT ticket for support.

Damian Doyle Named Deputy CIO at the University of Virginia

After more than twenty-five years as a staff member at UMBC, Damian Doyle has accepted the position of Deputy CIO at UVA. As someone who has worked closely with Damian each day for the last ten years, I’m both excited and saddened. Excited because I have watched Damian grow personally and professionally into an outstanding leader who excels at both the human and technical aspects of higher education. I know Damian’s best work is still to come and all of higher education will benefit. Saddened, because I will miss him as a valued colleague and friend. Watching how connected Damian is perceived across the higher education community, I’ve warned him he will need to set aside time for all of us at UMBC who have come to take those short impromptu conversations for granted to stay connected to him.

Damian’s contributions to UMBC and the Higher education community go well beyond information technology and speak to his impact as a person. Damian has been connected to UMBC since birth, both of Damian’s parents were UMBC graduates who met in that period called the Founding Four years. Damian chose to attend UMBC, earning both a B.S. in Computer Science and M.S. in Information Systems from UMBC. Damian has been actively involved in shared governance, serving on the UMBC Professional Staff Senate, including two terms as President. He has been actively involved in mentoring efforts on campus and works tirelessly to advance UMBC. One example is his work advancing STEM in K-12 through Maryland’s FIRST LEGO Robotics competition. Damian has pulled in many of his UMBC friends and colleagues to help organize the state championship each spring that brings thousands to the campus. In addition, during his time here at UMBC he has been active in UMBC’s Center for Women in IT and serves on the UMBC Alumni Board. In 2022, he also received the UMBC Presidential Distinguished Staff award.

Nationally, Damian is highly engaged with organizations like EDUCAUSE and Internet2. He received the EDUCAUSE Rising Star award in 2018. He has served as a faculty member for EDUCAUSE’s Senior Director Institute and their online Management Program and currently chairs the EDUCAUSE National Recognition Committee. Within Internet2, he chairs the Cloud Services Architecture Advisory Committee, co-chairs a track of the annual Technology Exchange conference, and is a long-standing member of the planning committee for the Higher Education Cloud Forum. Damian has been highly sought after as a mentor to a number of IT professionals at other institutions as they are beginning their leadership journey.

Damian will leave DoIT in a good place. He has built a very strong team and we know his colleagues are equipped technically and professionally to take on the added responsibilities. His direct reports – Todd Haddaway, Ray Soellner, David Toothe, and Jason Paluck – have been working with Damian each step of our journey. Damian leaves UMBC on a high-note, having just been funded as Principal Investigator on a NSF CC*Storage proposal submitted by UMBC. His DoIT colleagues will continue to see Damian at conferences such as EDUCAUSE and Internet2 and will likely feel strange hearing Damian mention his affiliation as Virginia but we will know he is thoroughly Black & Gold.

Officially, Damian is taking advantage of his long tenure to actuallyofficially retire from UMBC. In this way, he will remain part of our extended community. Plans for a time and place for those outside of DoIT to wish Damian well will be shared soon. Damian, I know I speak for all your DoIT colleagues in thanking you for your collegiality and service to UMBC!

<Tagline>New Wireless Access Points this Summer!</Tagline>

In partnership with the Office of Residential Life, DoIT will implement a completely new wireless system throughout all residential dorms and apartment complexes this Summer.

Over the past 18 months DoIT has been working closely with the Office of Residential Life to test, pilot and redesign the wireless system throughout the residential complexes. This project is the culmination of that work and has been driven by the experience of student residents through Residential Student Association Townhalls, surveys, and other means of soliciting feedback from student residents. This project will improve wireless access for students and staff in residence halls by improving wireless coverage in key areas, adding faster WiFi 6 capabilities, and installing more than 2,500 new wireless access points.

This project could not be possible without tremendous effort of our student employees in the Network and Telecommunications teams of DoIT.

If you have any questions regarding this project, please click here to submit a request to the Network Team.
