Fall 2013 Bb Course Shells Created 7/16/13

Bb course shells for FA 2013 were created on July 16, and will continue to be updated daily. Bb shells are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, or discussion) listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC), provided that there was an instructor of recordlisted. The addition of new course sections and instructors will result in new Bb shells being automatically generated each morning. Student enrollment in Bb will continue to mirror the official registration in SA, and will update hourly. If you are an instructor, and your name is not associated with the course you are teaching in the SOC, please see your departmental scheduling coordinator to get that issue resolved. Additionally in situations where one instructor is teaching multiple sections of the same course, by default all sections will be combined into one Bb course shell. If you want to have separate shells for different sections, or if you need a shell for for a research or independent study course, please submit a new course requestor submit an RT ticket with your request. As a reminder, all Bb course shells are initially unavailable to students until the instructor makes it available

Patrick Simon to leave UMBC on August 15th

It is with mixed emotions I am writing to announce that Patrick Simon, Business Analyst/Developer in DoIT’s Business Systems Group, will be leaving UMBC to become a consultant with Accenture. His last day on campus will be Thursday,
    August 15th.

Patrick has been with UMBC since 1998,
starting as a student employee and then hired full-time as a programmer to assist with the Student Information Legacy system and Y2k efforts. In 2003 Patrick joined the BSG technical
team supporting the PeopleSoft Finance system. After a very successful three-year
tour he took his new skills and moved over to the technical team focused on the
implementation for the PeopleSoft Student Administration system.

Patrick has been instrumental in the success of many projects at UMBC. Some recent projects
include an automated process for Admissions Posting Decision, which he
co-presented at the most recent Regional PeopleSoft Users Group in June 2013, Online
Transcript Request system from AVOW, and web-based front-end solutions for
    UMBC’s Request Tracker (RT) system.

Patrick is another DoIT staff member with a UMBC success story. While working full-time
he completed his Bachelors in Information Systems, got married and now has four
beautiful daughters, and somehow managed to achieve an MBA from University of
    Maryland University College in 2011.

I have truly enjoyed watching him grow into the professional he has become. Please
join me in congratulating Patrick on his past and future successes.

Staff Changes in Instructional Technology

<Tagline>Welcome to Carlton Crabtree and Tom Penniston</Tagline>

Fall 2014 Update: While Carlton Crabtree has moved on, Tom Penniston joined the Instructional Technology team full time this past spring. He also earned his Ph.D in Language, Literacy, and Culture from UMBC.

Tom's areas of expertise include learning analytics, TechRelay (formerly Camtasia Relay) screen casting, Box, Google Apps, Instructional Systems Design, iPads in the classroom, rubrics, Respondus Lockdown Browser and Blackboard.

---------------------------------------------------------

Following Karin Readel's departure last month, we've added some new staff and reassigned others in DoIT's Instructional Technology & New Media (ITNM) group.

Specifically, I'm pleased to announce that Carlton Crabtree and Tom Penniston have joined DoIT as contractual support staff. Carlton earned his Ph.D in Information Systems from UMBC in 2010, and is an adjunct instructor who's Blackboard course was the 60th most active of all 1,400+ courses in Spring 2013. Tom is a Ph.D candidate in the Language, Literacy and Culture program, and has been providing instructional technology support to the Division of Professional Studies, including the E-Teacher Program.

In addition, Anna Sniadach will be focusing more of her time on support of Blackboard integration with the Student Administration (SA) system, particularly course creation and enrollment. As such, we'll be shifting her responsibilities for the FAQ Knowledge Base to Andrea Mocko in the Technology Support Center (TSC). Finally, Joan Costello will be taking over responsibility for the Scantron test scoring process.

As we get closer to the start of the Fall 2013 semester, we'll announce a search for a new Director of Instructional Technology as well as some changes in how faculty can best get help. For now, join me in welcoming Carlton and Tom, and thanking Anna, Andrea and Joan for their flexibility and support.

Sincerely,
