How to Finance Graduate Education

If you’re deciding to go back to school, one of the largest obstacles
may be figuring out how you’re going to finance graduate education.
There are countless resources out there to assist you in finding
thousands of dollars in scholarships, grants, and loans. You just have
          to know where to look.

Find Scholarships and Grants

Scholarships are an ideal way to help finance graduate education
because they do not require any form of repayment. Thousands of them are
available every year, offered by universities, companies, nonprofits,
social or professional groups, individuals, and more. Based on funding
in the area, specific major programs often offer scholarships. Many
scholarships are available for those in science, technology, engineering
and math (STEM) fields, and healthcare.

State or federal aid given to the university provide grants. Like
scholarships, grants do not require repayment, but are usually
need-based rather than merit-based. Research grants are available for a
variety of fields, from technology to social science. They provide a
stipend in exchange for your participation in new or existing research.

Initially, Liz Ducey came from a biology background with the goal of
working in environmental science. She went on to gain graduate
credentials and professional connections from UMBC’s Geographic Information Systems Program. Utilizing
her skills from the program, Liz became a geospatial analyst at a top
global consulting firm. She describes her experiences in the classroom
and the workplace, and the doors that the GIS graduate program opened
          for her.

Realizing New Opportunities

Liz gained the skills to work on various types of data across
industries. She found that she could expand her horizons. Specifically,
opportunities to work in environmental science, public safety, renewable
energy, or fire and emergency services opened up with her knowledge and
credentials. After taking the Geospatial Intelligence Seminar taught by
a professor who worked at Booz Allen Hamilton, Liz realized a new

How to Succeed with Online Learning

    <Tagline>Debunking the myths</Tagline>

Online learning opens the door to education for many people. But,
it’s not for everyone. To decide if online learning is a viable option
for you, let’s look at a few key things about it.

The Facts of Online Learning

Online learning offers students high-quality instruction even if they
can’t attend courses face-to-face due to their busy work, family, or
travel schedules. Courses taught in this manner offer flexibility
in that students don’t have to travel to attend class. Additionally,
most online courses take place without fixed class hours. Free of those
limitations, students have the means to overcome geographic distance and
can balance busy work and family schedules with their coursework.

Another feature of online learning is that it helps promote
engagement. Online classes involve a lot of reading, writing, and
practical application. This offers students a great opportunity to work
collaboratively with other peers, as well as network. Students learn
from each other and often share their current work experiences in the
virtual classroom. Additionally, students have time to process their
thoughts and ideas before they share them with their instructor or
          classmates.

Online learning environments truly cultivate an interactive
environment. Many social barriers are eliminated online. For instance,
many students who remain quiet in a physical class often become active
          participants in an online course.

The Online Learning Myth

A lot of people might think that online learning is easier than face-to-face.

Let’s Debunk the Myth

What are the Benefits of a Graduate Degree?

    <Tagline>Is a Graduate Degree for You?</Tagline>

Obtaining a graduate degree requires time, determination, and commitment. It also requires you make some choices because a multitude of options exist. Let’s flesh them out.

Earning advanced degrees such as
master’s, doctoral, certificates, and non-credit training, can help you
move forward in your career in different ways. No doubt, deciding which
route to take can be overwhelming.

Is a Graduate Degree For You?

Let’s talk about a master’s degree.
What is it, and what can it do for you? Well, whether you want to pursue
a specialization in your field, advance beyond your current job, or
discover a new area of study, a master’s degree could help you take that
           critical step towards success.

Graduate Degree Types

For starters, master’s degrees can be either research- or
course-based. In research-based programs, students work independently on
a research project of their choosing, with guidance from department
faculty. Course-based graduate degree programs require more structured
time in seminars and lectures, but also usually have a research
component. Let’s further breakdown the categories of graduate programs
by type of study. These categories include programs such as Master of
Science (MSc, MS), Master of Arts (MA), Master’s of Professional Studies
(MPS) and Executive Master’s. The MPS programs are geared for working professionals and address current industry needs. Also, they are typically applied, and offer flexible classes.

When is the right time to head back to school?

    <Tagline>Should I stay or should I go?</Tagline>

By Julie Gilless, Director of Marketing, UMBC's Division of Professional Studies

For many years, I batted over whether or not now was the right time to go back to school for my master’s degree, and every year there was something holding me back. Whether it was working full-time with little spare time, tag-team parenting two energetic boys (one of whom has special needs), trying desperately to manage a work/life balance, or fear of over-commitment (yes, please), I never seemed to make time for me.

Then I turned 40. And with this milestone came a desire to focus more of my time on personal and professional growth – for me! Not for anyone else despite the nudging from colleagues and the concern from my family (when will you find the time??). It was solely for me. Realizing that I was older than the average graduate student (33 years old according to gradschoolhub.com) and that I bring with me a wealth of experience, I was empowered to begin this journey.

Rick Forno Contributes to PRI Story on Cyberwar

<Tagline>PRI Story Focuses on The Definition of Cyberwar</Tagline>

Rick Forno, Program Director for UMBC's Graduate Programs in Cybersecurity, was recently interviewed for a Public Radio International article on Cyberwar. Read the full text of the article below, or view the original story to listen to the interview.

Even as cyberwar rages, we can't really decide what cyberwar is

This story original appeared on Public Radio International on May 27, 2014.

You've heard it in reference to recent exchanges with China. And don't forget the 2012 cyberattack on the world's largest oil producer, Saudi Aramco. A cyberwarfare virus called Shamoon took down 30,000 Aramco computers. And then there is the Stuxnet worm that sabotaged Iran's nuclear centrifuges- many believe the US, and maybe Israel were behind that one.

But this is such a new area of conflict that even the definition of what constitutes cyberwarfare is constantly up for debate.

Rick Forno can describe in a broad sense what it means. He directs the University of Maryland Baltimore County's Graduate Cybersecurity Program. "Cyberwarfare is using computers to attack other computers as a way of exercising your national power or supporting your foreign policy or your military strategy."

But he says the rules of such warfare are still being written. He says there is no international agreement over what constitutes cyberwarfare and what does not, or what level of cyberwarfare is acceptable.

Forno says the sinister thing about cyberwarfare is that it’s stealthy in nature. Sometimes, you don't even know if someone has taken over your computer, or if your data has been manipulated, until it's too late. That's why the National Security Agency recommends covering your laptop's camera.

This is the world we live in.

So how ready is the United States to fight? Forno says it's tough to say. Much of the information on US capabilities is speculative. Official information on capabilities and strategy remains highly classified. That said, Forno believes the US has vulnerabilities that make the US susceptible to attacks. The reason? Much of how we live exists online. Power grids. Water treatment plants. Medical facilities. Businesses. Many of these facilities and organizations do not have adequate protection from hackers.

That’s why international power players battle each other. Take the sports analogy: you see a vulnerability and you capitalize on it. There are problems with going all out, of course. In the Cold War the phrase mutually assured destruction, M.A.D., warded off an all-out nuclear war. Forno says the same acronym is being reused to describe the consequences of cyberwarfare. “M.A.D. in one case can be viewed as mutually assured dependence,” he says. “We are all dependent on the same infrastructures.”

If a terrorist tries to shut down the Internet, he shuts it down for himself, too. So there’s this realization you can be victimized by your own attacks. Forno calls it a boomerang effect — what prevents many countries and entities from going all out. There won’t be a cyber-Armageddon, or a cyber-Pearl Harbor. Instead, he thinks we’ll see smaller sized battles waged with weapons like the Stuxnet virus.

“I think we’ll see more and more things like that versus a grandiose cyberwarfare that you can easily describe,” he says.

As for where cyberwarefare is headed, Forno isn’t sure. He says there are too many unknowns to say definitively where it will go. He think we’re going to muddle our way through as a society. He says when problems emerge, we’ll have to address them locally, and internationally.

“There really is no road map that we can say, ‘You know, we’re going to have a cyber detente, like we did during the Cold War.’”

NOTE: An earlier versin incorrectly stated the Stuxnet virus took down Saudi Aramaco computers. We regret the error.
