Researcher of the Week: Brian Hanson, Jr. Temperature-sensing systems for disabled CIPA patients
Brian D. Hanson, Jr. is a Meyerhoff Scholar and a McNair Scholar, majoring in Computer Engineering, who will graduate in spring, 2020. 

Title of your research project: 
Fabrication of a Wearable Temperature Sensing System for CIPA Patients

The purpose of this project was to develop a temperature sensing system that could be integrated into a glove to enable people who could not interpret the environmental hazards associated with temperature. Patients with Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis (CIPA) are a population who cannot interpret temperature therefore the creation of this system would serve as a tool to assist with increasing their level of independence in activities of daily living such as cooking for themselves.

Who is your mentor for your project? 
My mentor is Dr. Gymama Slaughter from the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Department.

How did you find your mentor?
I found Dr. Slaughter by word of mouth from other Meyerhoff Scholars who were current students in her lab. To secure my position in working in her lab in Summer 2018, I visited Dr. Slaughter after one of her classes even though I was not taking the course to express my interest.

Why did you choose them?
I chose Dr. Slaughter with hopes that she would give me an opportunity to continue my aspirations of conducting summer research and diversifying my experience as an undergraduate researcher aiming towards graduate study. I was not aware of her excellent skill set with developing proficient researchers prior to reaching out to her. Moreover, she demonstrated as a mentor for her students how we should work together, study the problems we are researching, and uphold a standard of excellent when presenting our work.

How did you become interested in this project?
I became interested in this project by informing Dr. Slaughter what my interests were in regard to conducting research as a junior. I had summer research experiences as a freshman and sophomore in the fields of Human Computer Interaction at Iowa State University and Data Science at North Carolina State University respectively.

What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher? 
The most challenging aspect of my research was developing a wireless implementation of the temperature sensing system with an Arduino. It was very unexpected to receive so much support from Dr. Slaughter such that she was willing to enter our research for consideration at an international conference.

What has been the most rewarding part?
The most rewarding aspect of working as an undergraduate researcher in Dr. Slaughter lab is having the professional relationship with her as a mentor. I have expressed to her how determined I am to reach graduate studies and she has provided nothing but guidance to help me along my path. 

How will you disseminate your research?
I will disseminate our research as an URCAD presentation during the Spring 2019 semester. On behalf of the UMBC McNair Scholars Program Summer Research Institute (SRI), I have presented this research at the 2018 SAEOPP McNair/SSS Scholars Research Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research? 
I encourage any student to get involved with research because you never know what passions you can discover or who you can help by doing this kind of work. For some people it may challenging at first but conducting research can have so much of an impact on your community based on how you make it.

What are your career goals?
My career goals are to pursue a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering in the field of Rehabilitation Sciences and Technology with a focus on Micro-fabrication of Assistive Technology devices.  My goal is to develop initiatives that improve the quality of life for people who are veterans, disabled, or have diseases that impede their ability to enjoy their lives.

URCAD XXIII:
Over 250 Undergraduate Presenters in All Disciplines Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) features research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Student work is shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits and performances, and film.

Over 250 presenters participate annually. Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research, or research that is part of the mentor’s on-going projects.  They are from all disciplines, and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated with other programs.

Students who have received Undergraduate Research Awards (URA) for the previous year will be presenting their findings. The UMBC Review, UMBC’s annual peer-reviewed research journal, which features academic papers written by UMBC undergraduates, makes its debut at this event- stop by and get your copy! Come hear the alumni keynote speaker talk about their experiences after UMBC, and how being an undergraduate researcher benefited them.

UMBC is unique in providing this opportunity for undergraduate students to conduct and present their research in a professional and supportive setting.  Students get valuable feedback from their peers, faculty, and staff, and practice their public speaking and presentations skills.  This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBC’s commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.

Come to URCAD on Wednesday, April 25 where Theatre student Mia Rickenbach will present her visual research, "Seeing the Stories: How Art Can Impact Human Trafficking Awareness".

This research was a study of theatrical scenic art, which evolved into a project investigating the impact of visual storytelling on human trafficking awareness. The study of scenic art included working in large-scale, trompe l’oeil illusion painting, matching paint color, and faux finishes such as marble and wood grain. These techniques were developed at Cobalt Studios’ Summer Scene Painting, and employed in the scenic design and painting of UMBC’s Department of Theatre productions.

Come to URCAD on Wednesday, April 25, where Interdisciplinary Studies major Ethan Griffin will present his research “Urban Transportation Landscapes: A GIS and Political Historical Narrative of Baltimore’s Transportation Deficiency” in UC 312 at 11:30 a.m.

The intent of the research is to represent the extent of Baltimore City’s transportation deficiency through the use of an interdisciplinary mixed method analysis utilizing the lens of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Political History. Metropolitan transportation is a complex network of mobility which contributes to the success of tangential urban systems which include but are not limited to access to green space, education and economics.

Come to URCAD on Wednesday, April 25, History major Morgan Miller will present her research, 'Humphrey Jennings and the Documentary of the “People’s War”'.

The purpose of my research is to examine the work of Humphrey Jennings, a British documentary filmmaker during the Second World War. My particular focus is to examine how his highly influential films helped lay the foundations for what historians today refer to as the myth of the “People’s War”; a widespread belief in Britain that the war effort had rested in large measure on the extraordinary efforts and resilience of ordinary civilians on the home front.

HaloWeb is a web application suite for highly integrated genomic and transcriptomic analysis of prokaryotic microorganisms. With the arrival of new high-throughput sequencing technology, more genomic information is available than ever before, with an accompanying need for bioinformatic analysis tools.
