- Read about opportunities in your major. Investigate the summer programs linked to your major and pick 15 favorites.
- Put these workshops on your calendar
- Use the advice on the same page to start getting to know your professors. You will need letters of recommendation by the end of the semester.
- Visit the Career Center or Shriver Center to make sure your resume is the best it can be for this purpose.

Researcher of the Week: Kathy Vu
Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!
Meet Kathy. She is a Psychology major who is graduating this Spring! Her research explored parental control in the Chinese immigrant and European American context.
How did you find your mentor for year research?
After discussing my interest in cross-cultural research, Dr. Cheah recruited me as a research assistant for her Culture, Child and Adolescent Development Lab.
How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?
While I was collecting data through conducting qualitative interviews with European American mothers for Dr. Cheah’s project, I began to develop my own research questions and decided to further examine parental control in both the Chinese immigrant context and European American context.
Is this your first independent research project?
Yes, this was my first independent research project!
Do you get course credit for this work?
Yes, I received credit for this work by registering for PSYC 490.
How much time do you put into it?
I put a lot of time and effort into writing the proposal, collecting data, coding the interviews, analyzing the results, and producing a report. Although it was demanding at times, it was also extremely rewarding to be able to understand all the details that go into a research project.
How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?
Dr. Cheah suggested to me that I apply for the Undergraduate Research Award in order to help fund my independent research project. It was through her support that I was able to successfully receive this award!
What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA?
Before applying for the URA, I had worked in the lab for several months and enrolled in psychology courses that helped inform my project.
Was the application difficult to do?
The application for the URA was fairly straightforward. In addition, I already had research questions I wanted to examine. The difficult part was being able to express myself coherently and figuring out the funding situation.
How much did your mentor help you with the application?
As mentioned before, Dr. Cheah was extremely helpful and responsive to my needs. She helped guide me through how to coherently express my thought process and suggested areas I needed to elaborate on.
What has been the hardest part about your research?
The most difficult part about my research was voicing why it is important to do research on understanding parenting in immigrant families. Understanding parenting will allow us to promote the positive development of children of immigrant families!
What was the most unexpected thing?
Staying on top with current literature was extremely important and caught me off guard!
What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?
Research may seem daunting but it is extremely rewarding to see your research come to fruition. Although there are times where I found it extremely difficult, I had fun seeing my project move from start to finish! Students should not be afraid to participate in research! There are many great mentors out there who are willing to guide students through this process.
What are your career goals?
My career goal is to eventually conduct cross-cultural research examining the socialization and expression of emotions in families and to teach psychology in an academic setting.

Researcher of the Week: Rajashree Mishra
Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!
We met Rajashree last Fall semester and we thought it would be a good idea to revisit our researcher's again to promote the hard work that she has been working on.
Rajashree is a Bioinformatics & Computational Biology major and an undergraduate researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Her research probed into the micro-biological world of protein interaction which is essential to understand function within cells, pathways and relationship to diseases.
How did you find your mentor for year research project?
Through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Scholars Program.
How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?
I chose the lab because of the friendly environment, the skills I knew I would be learning, and the idea of developing a tool that could be useful for the scientific community.
Is this your first independent research project?
Yes.
Do you get course credit for this work?
Yes, it counts for an upper level biology elective.
How much time do you put into it?
I put it in about 12 hours a week.
How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?
A fellow undergraduate in the lab received a URA.
What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA?
When I applied, I had 2.5 years of undergraduate courses. This includes Biology, Chemistry, Math, Physics, Statistics and Computer Science.
Was the application difficult to do?
No, because I have written abstracts before and I was very familiar with my work.
How much did your mentor help you with the application?
I wrote the application independently and she reviewed and edited it.
What has been the hardest part about your research?
The hardest part about the research is evaluating my method. It’s a unique method and is hard to find other methods out there to compare it to.
How does your research relate to your work in other classes?
My research relates to the skills I learned in my computer science classes and it can be applied to the information I learn in my biology classes.
What else are you involved in on campus?
I am president of Hindu Students Council and a member of UMBC ADAA, and the South Asian fusion dance team
What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?
“What is research, but a blind date with knowledge.”

What you learn from books and lectures is incomparable to the information and skills you learn from being involved in research. In my opinion, a great research experience is based on how much you learned and what skills you gained from the experience.
What are your career goals?
I will be applying to PhD programs this Fall. As I work towards completing my PhD, I will better understand whether or not I want to stay in academia, work for the government, or go into industry. I eventually would like to teach at the college level.

Researcher of the Week: Robbin Lee
Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!
How did you find your mentor for your research project?
Professor Fan Yang was my professor for MCS222: Intro to Media & Comm. Studies. During the class, she described her personal research involving Apple products in the Chinese youth community. Eventually, after I narrowed down what I wanted to research, I knew that Professor Yang was the perfect candidate to be my faculty advisor.
How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?
It took months and semesters to really refine the topic I wanted to research. A culmination of academic studies, personal motivation and faculty guidance helped me to realize my project proposal.
Is this your first independent research project?
Yes.
Do you get course credit for this work?
No.
How much time do you put into it?
So far, for my preliminary studies, I cannot come up with a concrete number as to how much time I have put into it. I am always thinking about it, when I am researching other topics for classes, when I am planning my travel activities, and especially when I am brainstorming ideas for my next proposal. (Fulbright)
How did you hear about the URA program?
I heard about it first from Professor Preminda Jacob. She has served on the URA committee and she recommended that I try for one. She is one of the art history professors who I am very close to and talk to about my future academic and professional goals.
What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA?
As far as research background, I have taken a handful of art history courses that require us to write independently researched papers. In the fall of 2012, Professor Smalls' Non-Western Art seminar has further guided my research topic towards Contemporary Chinese Art. Most recently I've had the opportunity to shape the research for my Art History Capstone Thesis paper as mostly a preliminary study of the global perspective on Contemporary Chinese Art.
Was the application difficult to do?
Yes, the process was time-consuming and tedious, but a worthwhile process to go through, especially in the arts field where proposals are crucial.
How much did your mentor help you with the application?
My mentor was really helpful by being there to bounce ideas back and forth. She really helped me articulate my ideas sophisticatedly and intellectually, especially when she took the time to proofread my drafts.
What has been the hardest part about your research?
The hardest part about my research has been working around the limitations of sources that are based in a western perspective. It has been hard deciphering what is true to the group of people I am studying because the topic is novel and has not been written about academically to a large extent.
What was the most unexpected thing?
The most unexpected thing is how much my topic ideas changed throughout the application drafting process. As I learned different things in my preliminary study, it change. As I articulated statements differently, it changed. As I discussed with my faculty advisor(s), it changed.
How does your research relate to your work in other classes?
The theories and concepts that apply in my art history and media and communication studies classes have helped me to approach my topic in structured frameworks. They have helped me to focus my topic and to find a starting point.
What else are you involved in on campus?
I am a member of the Women's Varsity Volleyball team and I also head coach the Men's Club Volleyball team. I am a research assistant to Professor Preminda Jacob (Art History) in her research of street murals in the city of Chennai, India, and Professor Jason Loviglio (MCS) in his research of postliberalism in NPR.
What is your advice to other students getting involved in research?
Be creative and stay open-minded and flexible when it comes to topics. But also, be specific, especially in the Humanities.
What are your career goals?
In the long run, I want to be involved in the arts world in an influential position. I aim to get into arts administration or arts education in order to help artists and creative minds make a difference in our culture.
