  <Title>Make your PowerPoints Accessible w/Instructional Technology</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><div><br>Are your PowerPoint presentations accessible to every student in your course? Instructors routinely upload PowerPoint presentations into their course, but this doesn't mean that every student has the same opportunity to access the materials, based on an individual's abilities. </div><div><br></div><div><strong><em>Instructional Technology is conveniently offering this online, one-hour course on November 13th at noon.  Click on the Visit Website button below to register through myUMBC.</em></strong></div><div><br></div><div>Microsoft PowerPoint is widely used to distribute content and information. Unfortunately, students with disabilities are often faced with an array of challenges when accessing PowerPoint presentations. According to the Quality Matters rubric for assessing courses, “course design [and content] should reflect a commitment to accessibility and usability for all learners, ensuring they can access all course content and activities.” </div><div><br></div><div>Join us to learn how you can make your PowerPoint Presentations more accessible. Remember: accessible content is good content! </div></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Objectives</strong></div><div>Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:</div><div><ul><li>Update to the latest version of Microsoft Office through UMBC's Office 365 license </li><li>Utilize headers, formatting tools, and text styles rather than stylizing text</li><li>Modify alt text on images and shapes for screen-readers</li><li>Explain the importance of layout stylization and its impact on accessibility, like creating table headers, or splitting text into multiple columns </li><li>Review accessibility through the Read Aloud, Check Accessibility, and Ally tools   </li></ul></div><div><br></div><div><strong>About Ally</strong></div><div><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=77431271" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Ally </a>is a tool used for instructors to <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=77431289" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">receive feedback on the accessibility of their content</a>, coupled with instructions on how to <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=77431315" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">improve the accessibility of their content</a>. Attend this orientation and demonstration session to see Ally’s powerful file conversion tools for alternative formats.   <Title>Welcome Dr. Jennifer Mata-McMahon</Title>

    <![CDATA[
    <div class="html-content"><p>The education department, in collaboration with the Sherman
    Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities, is pleased to welcome Associate
    Professor, Jennifer Mata-McMahon, Ed.D. Dr. Mata-McMahon graduated from
    Universidad Metropolitana in Caracas, Venezuela with a BA in Early Childhood
    Education with emphasis in Educational Leadership and Administration. She
    received her MA, EdM, and EdD from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her
    graduate work was also in the field of Early Childhood Education with an
    emphasis in Bilingual/Bicultural Education. Since 1995, Dr. Mata-McMahon has
    been an infant, toddler, preschool, and kindergarten teacher, as well as taught
    in middle school, undergraduate and graduate levels, both in the US and abroad.
    Dr. Mata-McMahon has also offered ample professional development to teachers
    and professors in public and private settings, as well as conducted program
    evaluations for non-profit educational organizations in India, New York, and
    Illinois. She is the coauthor of <em>Ambiente
    en Acción</em> (<em>Environment in Action</em>)
    (2006), author of <em>Spiritual Experiences
    in Early Childhood Education</em> (2015), and coeditor of <em>Spirituality: An Interdisciplinary View</em> (2016), as well as the
    author and coauthor of several book chapters and journal articles. In addition
    to her professional responsibilities in the education department’s early
    childhood program, Dr. Mata-Mahon will conduct school-based research and
    provide professional development to early childhood educators through her joint-appointment
    with the Sherman Center (<span><a href="https://shermancenter.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://shermancenter.umbc.edu/</a></span>).

  <Title>Office of Accessibility and Disability Services Expansion</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><table border="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td><table border="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td><div><span>Dear Members of the UMBC Community,</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>UMBC is committed to fostering a campus community that promotes and enhances access and inclusion for individuals with disabilities.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>As part of our efforts to progress beyond compliance and towards seamless access to University services and spaces, we are pleased to announce the expansion of the Office of Student Disability Services that will now fall under the Office of <span>Accessibility</span> and Disability Services (ADS) within the Division of Academic Affairs. The ADS will be the central office for managing resources, initiatives, and concerns related to <span>accessibility</span> and will serve as the primary resource for students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors. ADS will also provide expertise to the UMBC community regarding workshops and training, emerging issues, updates on acquisition of resources, facilities planning, and policy reviews. As the focal points, ADS will be responsible for the coordination of all disability accommodation requests by UMBC employees and students and will also serve as the first point of contact for any disability access-related concerns or campus complaints.</span></div></td></tr></tbody></table><div><div><span>ADS will work closely with Facilities Management, Human Resources, Student Affairs, Human Relations, the Division of Information Technology, and the Library to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Current SDS Director, Tawny McManus, will lead the ADS office. We are also excited to announce that Stephanie Lazarus, UMBC's current ADA/Section 504 Coordinator, formerly with the Office of Human Relations, has transitioned to join ADS.     <Title>Last chance to order books through ILL!</Title>

          <div class="html-content">Still working on your research?  Please plan ahead for the <a href="http://library.umbc.edu/location#hours" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Library's winter hours</a>!<br><br>The Interlibrary Loan Department: <br><ul><li>will be closing at 4:30 pm December 22, 2016 and will reopen Tuesday, January 3, 2017</li><li>will not be able to process and send ILL requests for UMBC patrons <strong>from December 22 to January 3</strong> as most of the libraries we borrow from will be closed as well</li><ul><li>If you request a book after December 11 you may not receive it until sometime in January</li><li>plan accordingly (on average it takes about two weeks to get a book through ILL)</li></ul><li>will continue to accept your requests and send them out when we return</li><li>wishes you a happy holiday and new year!</li></ul><br>If you will be gone during the January winter break please do not submit ILL book requests until a week or so before you return.</div>
