Critical Social Justice: Baltimore 365

  <Tagline>Save the Dates - October 19th through 23rd!</Tagline>

Critical Social Justice: Baltimore 365 — October 19th through 23rd!

When the unrest swelled again in Baltimore on Monday, April 27th, 2015, UMBC was in the midst of studying for final exams and preparing for the end of the semester. For many, the Uprising seemed well removed from our campus, as a perceived sense of distance from the city belies the significance of the ‘B’ in UMBC. Aside from periodically checking the local news updates or receiving a swell of calls and messages from concerned relatives on Facebook, studying and campus night life went on as usual. For some students, the reality of a Baltimore in chaos mere miles away didn’t sink in until they saw fires burning from the 7th floor of Albin O. Kuhn Library.

But for many others, those fires were burning our city—our home.

As members of the Critical Social Justice team unpacked the events that transpired in Baltimore, we struggled to find balance in the divide between the university and Baltimore. The divide, for example, between staying at home in the city to engage in a movement for Black lives or leaving the city for UMBC to create healing spaces, meet with students in need, and challenge those who had yet to understand the complexities and vast differences between riots and uprisings. The reality of an “us” and a “them” felt very real as we navigated back and forth on campus during those next few days. While on campus, it was easy to think through theory, strategize, and simply talk about Baltimore in the abstract; however, at night with the sounds of helicopters and sirens invading through our windows, we desperately needed our other UMBC community members to think beyond Hilltop Circle.

Baltimore City and the pervasive violence and injustice there can no longer be talked about in the abstract. Whether or not Baltimore is your home, Critical Social Justice calls each of us in this privileged community of higher education to think and engage critically about Baltimore. We cannot only think about the city when we see a fire from the library or when the Ravens win the Super Bowl. Much like Critical Social Justice is a year-long campaign, our critical thinking, action, and care for Baltimore must happen all 365 days a year.

This year’s Critical Social Justice initiative aims to create space and learning opportunities to consider the ways we can cultivate deep and lasting commitments to Baltimore City that are meaningful to us as individuals and as part of the UMBC community. By focusing on Baltimore, we aim to engage with local social justice issues and activism while framing our understanding within the context of larger national movements and ongoing struggles against systemic racism and injustice.

Our campus and our city are not as separate as they may seem at our quiet university—nor are they as readily connected as our proximity and names might lead people to believe. Critical Social Justice: Baltimore 365 knits the UMBC and Baltimore communities together in the hopes of growing into a better UMBC through a better Baltimore.

Critical Social Justice: Baltimore 365 will be held on October 19th through 23rd, 2015.Follow the CSJ blog, Facebook, and Twitter for updates on scheduled events and other news.
Summer Opportunity for Students in Education/Psychology

  <Tagline>Carngie Mellon/University of Pittsburgh: Deadline Feb. 15</Tagline>

Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh have
an exciting opportunity summer research experience for
            undergradates (REU) available for undergraduates.

This REU program is sponsored by LearnLab, a Science of Learning
Center funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). We
encourage applications from students who would like to conduct
research in the fields of psychology, education, computer
science, human-computer interfaces and language technologies.
LearnLab's REU program allows talented undergraduates to spend 8
weeks during the summer in a research laboratory at Carnegie
Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, or one of our
research partners. The REU program supports LearnLab's
commitment to training a diverse set of science, technology,
            education, and psychology leaders.

Applications are encouraged from students who wish to learn to
conduct research in a modern academic research laboratory under
the guidance of experienced scientists and engineers and
experiment in real classroom environments. The REU program will
expose students to the excitement and opportunities of a
research career. This experience will provide excellent
preparation for students interested in subsequently pursuing a
Masters or Ph.D. degree. Although students from other years may
apply, this opportunity is most fitting for a student at the end
of the junior year of undergraduate studies.

Each student will receive a fellowship stipend of $4000 for the
eight-week REU program. Food, housing and travel will also be
provided. Students will conduct research in an area matched to
the interests expressed in the student's application. Guidance
and supervision of the research project will be provided by the
faculty member as well as, in some cases, a postdoctoral fellow
            and/or advanced graduate student.

Seminars specific to those participating in the REU program will
be held weekly including seminars on graduate admissions and
career opportunities in science, education, computer science and
engineering. In addition, LearnLab seminars and those held by
Carnegie Mellon's Human Computer Interaction Institute and
Language Technologies Institute and seminars at Pitt's Language
Research and Development Center will be open to the students,
giving them exposure to a wide range of research in learning
            sciences.

There are several benefits that the participating students may
receive. If the student’s research in the summer is of high
quality and has added value to an ongoing research project, past
students have been asked to be a coauthor on the research team's
publication on that subject. Addition of publications to the
resume of a graduate school applicant always greatly improves
the application. If the quality of the research is high, the
faculty member who advised the student would likely be willing
to write a letter of recommendation for the student which could
be included in a graduate school application. Research
experience in one of the National Science Foundation's premier
research centers will be viewed attractively. Finally, a summer
spent in one of the National Science Foundation's premier
project areas is a plus in an application whether it be for
entry to Carnegie Mellon or the University of Pittsburgh or to
            any other institution.

There are scholarships available for graduate work on projects
in LearnLab. The student should inquire about these
            possibilities during the summer program.

REU Program Dates: Students will begin their research experience
on Sunday, June 2, 2013 with a welcoming reception and
information session. The REU program will end on Friday July
26, 2013 with a poster session in the afternoon. Submission of
an application indicates that the applicant agrees to be present
            from June 2 to 4pm July 26, 2013 inclusive.

Application Deadline: Deadline for applications is February 15,
2013. Students will be informed of our decision by March 1,
            2013.

Minimum Requirements: Students should have a minimum of 3.5 GPA
out of 4.0 although we will consider students who show by other
measures that they are exceptional and who have GPAs over 3.2.
Class standing and grades in specific subjects that are close to
the field of research will also be considered, as are
            recommendations.

Number of slots/ positions available: LearnLab can accommodate
as many as 10 positions, although in any given year, we may
decide to fund less than 10 applicants

Meet The DEI: Matt Cheng

  <Tagline>Profiling the Mosaic Center's Diversity Educator Interns</Tagline>

The Diversity Educator Interns are a mix of six, talented undergraduate and graduate students who work to fulfill the Mosaic Center's mission and vision by promoting cross cultural programs, education and collaboration. Want to know more? Contact mosaic@umbc.edu.

Q: What is your year and major at UMBC?
A: I am a Junior and am double majoring in
    Psychology and Media & Communication.

Q: How
is your major applicable to diversity education?
A: My majors are not applicable to diversity
education, but they have helped me learn different ways of
thinking and communicating. I can apply my knowledge to diversity education by helping
increase communication and understanding through events, videos, and other forms
    of communication.

Q: Why
did you decide to apply for the Diversity Educator Internship?
A: Diversity education is something that I have always been interested in.
    I wanted to help bring
different groups and people together to discuss and accept each other. I
believed this internship would help me figure out how to
use my personal skills to
    educate others about diversity.

Q: How
    would you define diversity?
A: I believe that diversity occurs when people accept and acknowledge
    differences in others.

Q: How does UMBC foster an appreciation for diversity?
A: UMBC has a multitude of groups that students can participate in that
    provide opportunities to interact with
different cultures and beliefs. Even if you don’t participate in a group, it is
impossible to walk around campus and not find someone who has a different
    background from yours.

Q: What are ways that students can participate in
    advocacy for diversity?

A: I believe that students can be advocates by learning instead
of assuming when it comes to others,
going to events that are not the norm for them, and keeping an open mind.

Q: After graduating how will you continue to be an
    advocate for diversity?

A: I’m still figuring out everything for after graduation, but
I would love to go find work as a Diversity Educator or
eventually become someone who teaches about gender stratification and stereotypes.
I find diversity, cultural interaction, and gender stereotypes interesting and
going into any of these fields would give me tools to be an even better advocate for
diversity. I also view being an advocate for diversity as a life style. It can just be
little acts of kindness and acceptance, not a huge world changing cause.
