IMPORTANT! ENTR URA due TOMORROW, MAY 15TH!

 <Tagline>$1,500 RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY!</Tagline>

Hello Retrievers!

This is an important message about the ENTR URA research opportunity from the Director of Undergraduate Research and Prestigious Scholarships

There are many changes happening to student research as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and campus closure. The URA selection committee has some advice to encourage you to apply for a URA and start to plan your research, even if there are some unknowns for the summer and fall semesters.

1. We have moved the application deadline back to May 15, 2020 in order to give students some extra time to prepare their research proposals.

2. Some research that was scheduled to start this summer may be delayed until the fall or spring semester- that’s ok! The URA is good for the entire year, June 1, 2020 to May 31, 2121. You can complete the research at any point during that time frame.

3. Our expectations for a final product are fluid and relaxed. If the research plan doesn’t work out exactly as you proposed, that’s ok- it’s the nature of doing research.

4. Be creative in the ways you think about your project. You may have to focus instead on doing a thorough literature review, using a pre-formed data set to analyze, or looking at case studies, rather than collecting in-person data, or conducting research in a lab.

5. Methods such as lab benchwork, participant observations, focus groups, travel-related, in-person interviews, or other real-time collection methods may need some re-thinking. How can you collect data via online interviews, the internet, or other technological interventions?

6. Creative arts projects may incorporate some kind of online delivery method. We are hoping to be back on campus for URCAD 2021, but consider how VoiceThread might be used to display your creative work.

*Remember:*

URAs provide up to $1,500 to undergraduate students to support their research, scholarship, or creative work with a UMBC faculty mentor on an original project. UMBC students of all years and disciplines are invited to apply, as long as they remain enrolled at UMBC long enough to complete the proposed work.

Deadline: May 15, 2020

Applications require a research proposal and mentor statement of support.

Speciality URAs will be awarded to Social Scientists and Entrepreneurs- see below for more details. ur.umbc.edu/ura

IMPORTANT! ENTR URA extended until MAY 15TH, This Friday!

<Tagline>URAs provide up to $1,500 to undergraduate students!</Tagline>

Announcement of the CBIC Winners!

<Tagline>Octotalk, Greater Plate, Madina Girl and Karotene!</Tagline>

Hello Retrievers!

We hope you are doing well! On behalf of the Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship we want to recognize this year’s Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition (CBIC) winners. This year’s event was especially unique because it didn’t take place in person, but was held virtually on April 30th.

This year we received close to 20 ideas and outside judges selected the top 4 to go to the final competition. Finishing in fourth place was Computer Science PhD student Akshay Peshave, founder of Karotene, an artificial intelligence-enabled engine that automatically discovers knowledge using natural language descriptions from the user. An award of $500 was earned by Akshay.

Third place took home $1,000 and that was awarded to Madina Girl created by Noha Darwish, a psychology major. Madina Girl is a clothing line focused on creating modest clothing. These designs are fashion-forward, affordable, and are of exceptional quality. Noha stated, “I am not looking to merely provide modest clothing; I am looking to translate fashion, artistry, and a sense of taste in all my products”

Second place, Greater Plate, took home $2,000. Laura Holland, a computer science major and Nicky Sicilia, a BTA major, partnered together on this idea to create an app to provide healthier food options, particularly for families struggling with food security in Baltimore.

First place, Octotalk, took home $3,000. Octotalk was founded by Emma Neubert, a biochemistry major. Emma and her partner Scott Hart worked tirelessly on this idea to help children who have difficulty connecting through verbal communication. To address the problem, Emma designed a hand-knitted stuffed octopus with the ability to portray multiple emotions that can convey how a child is feeling.

Thank you to our two judges, Baltimore Angels Merete Sereck-Hanssen and Sam Diener, for taking time out of their schedule to help choose our winners for the CBIC. Special thanks to CBIC sponsor alum Greg Cangialosi, all the mentors who helped guide our participants, our faculty, staff and student supporters attending the event, and our IT department for their excellent assistance throughout the event!

WORKSHOP TODAY: Perfecting the Pitch!

Do you struggle with presenting your pitch or wish you could get feedback on it? Your ability to effectively communicate your business idea is critical to your success. This is especially true when delivering a “Pitch”. Your pitch, sometimes in a matter of minutes or seconds, will determine whether a stranger will take an interest in you and your business or just walk away. When that stranger is a potential investor, partner, or customer, it is easy to understand how critical an effective pitch can be. This talk will cover different types of pitches with an emphasis on the investor pitch including what should be said and how it should be delivered.

Come to our workshop with Stephen Auvil, the executive vice president for operations and programs at the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) and gain some feedback and insight on how to perfect your pitch!

A little bit about Stephen:

Stephen Auvil is the executive vice president for operations and programs at the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO). In this capacity, he oversees TEDCO’s general operations, various investment programs, and other programs designed to support entrepreneurial activity in the State of Maryland. TEDCO is a technology-based, economic development organization that supports early-stage technology companies – especially those commercializing technology from Maryland’s universities and federal labs. Prior to TEDCO, Stephen spent 17 years in university technology transfer at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and the Johns Hopkins University. He has an undergraduate degree in biology and engineering science, and he has master’s degrees in business administration and biotechnology.
