The UMBC Idea Competition is designed to challenge you to think about problems and opportunities all around us. As one of the most innovative schools in the nation, UMBC harbors many innovative students that have ideas that can change the world, and you can have the opportunity to witness all the talent UMBC harbors! 

The top entries will be judged by a panel of professionals and alumni, along with a crowd of students on November 27, 2018 from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM, at the final competition in the Sports Zone in the Commons. 

Cash prizes are:

Strong product management discipline is a force multiplier and key

success factor for startups and mature companies alike. In figuring out

product market fit, building an MVP, listening closely to customers, and

continuing to improve and scale products as the company grows, early

stage founders wear the hat of a product manager. However, many are

unsure how to stack the deck in their favor.

In this Meetup, John Funge, Chief Product Officer at DataTribe, will

share lessons learned from his experience as a tech founder and product

leader in companies large and small.

Whether you’re working on a startup, have an idea and want to clarify

what to do next, are a member of a technology team in a larger company,

or just interested in how to roll out and manage a product, this meetup

will deepen your product management knowledge and provide useful details on:

  * Effective product management in the context of an early-stage

    technology company

  * Common mistakes to avoid

  * How to evolve the process as a startup grows

Concluding our exciting set of events for this fall semester, we are excited to host our annual Entrepreneurs Panel Discussion! We will be hosting four panelists: Zhensen Huang, Yasmin Karimian, Brendon Thach, and Erin Patterson, all current entrepreneurs and UMBC alumni! Calling all entrepreneurs! Want to meet fellow student entrepreneurs? Innov8MD is the perfect opportunity to do so! UMBC is proud to take part in Innov8MD, and we want YOU to have the opportunity to network and learn more about Baltimore's entrepreneurial ecosystem. 

Innov8MD is a one-night conference dedicated to showcasing student entrepreneurs across Maryland’s universities. The event will kickoff with our keynote speaker, who will talk about the Baltimore entrepreneurial ecosystem and how students and universities contribute to making it great. Then, attendees get the chance to see what student entrepreneurs at 8 local universities are building in a casual showcase setting, all while networking over free food and drink!

Innov8MD is November 9th, 2018 from 5-8pm at Spark Baltimore. Participating universities include: Johns Hopkins, Towson, MICA, UMD, UMB, UMBC, UB, and Morgan State. The event is open to the public – university affiliation is not required.

Tomorrow is our last talk in our Entrepreneurship Workshop series this semester!

Rick Milter will be introducing us to Design Thinking, a new and innovative way of developing creative strategies during the design process. Rick will be walking us through a real life case study so you can see how these tools were applied and the innovative results they achieved. We’re excited to announce that this semester’s Speaker Series will showcase a 5th Generation entrepreneur, Russell Fugett, President and Chief Revenue Officer at Good Word. Come learn about how Russell has disrupted the norm throughout his entrepreneurial career, from selling handmade paper toys at age 7 to founding Fugett Baseball Group, a private equity firm designed to acquire and manage Major League Baseball Teams, Stadiums, and related businesses. If you’re ready to make a mark on the world yourself, you’re going to want to listen to the lessons that Russell has learned along the way!

 

Russell Fugett prides himself on being a 5th Generation entrepreneur. His great-great grandfather escaped slavery and went on to own his own business and have 2 US Patents. His late uncle, Reginald F. Lewis, executed the largest ever at the time off-shore leverage buyout with his $930MM+ acquisition of Beatrice Foods. He remembers helping his father, CEO of Beatrice Foods, negotiate a multimillion dollar contract extension for his client with Dallas Cowboys, owner Jerry Jones. Despite this legacy, the entrepreneurial journey has been grueling. After earning his M.S. from the George Washington University School of Business, he formed his first company, TLC JR, LLC, an Investments and Consulting Firm. Since then, he has founded and operated two additional companies: Fugett Baseball Group and Good Word Digital, a consulting firm he is still operating. In addition, he’s founded a series of subsidiaries for each of these companies to raise capital, acquire companies and intellectual property, and form new partnerships.
