Join us tomorrow, Wednesday, September 28 from 12 - 1pm for our first Speaker Series of the Fall 2016 semester.

Presented by Baltimore’s very own Jamaal Collier--better known as “Mr. Root”, this Speaker Series is for the artists at heart here at UMBC. Spend an hour with us in UC 312 and become inspired by Jamaal’s life as an Entrepreneurial Artist. We look forward to seeing you!

Description

Come listen to Jamaal "Mr. Root" Collier talk about his journey to becoming a professional artist. Who inspired him when he was in high school? What factors in college prompted him to change and incorporate more than one artistic form of expression? Why does he think the "starving artist" cliche doesn't have to be the norm....and what has he done about it? Jamaal will talk about the importance of mentors in his life and his entrepreneurial journey that has allowed him to create art, make a living, and enjoy what he is doing. Now he is inspiring and teaching others to do the same.

About Jamaal

Jamaal—or “Mr. Root”—is a dedicated and versatile professional Hip Hop artist with more than a decade of experience facilitating workshops and live performances in the Mid-Atlantic region. By incorporating rapping, vocal percussion, and dynamic stage presence, Jamaal articulates his passionate appreciation for his artistry every time he teaches and performs.
Join us on Wednesday, September 28 from 12 - 1pm for our first Speaker Series of the Fall 2016 semester.

Presented by Baltimore’s very own Jamaal Collier--better known as “Mr. Root”, this Speaker Series is for the artists at heart here at UMBC. Spend an hour with us next week in UC 312 and become inspired by Jamaal’s life as an Entrepreneurial Artist.

Jamaal was named the Mic-ology Spoken Word Slam Champion in 2007.

 <Tagline>Work w/ refugee youth & make culturally sig. art w/ ArtWorks</Tagline>

About Us

Baltimore City Community College Refugee Youth Project (BCCC RYP) provides after-school and summer programs to refugee students grades K-12. They receive tutoring, mentoring, English classes, STEM education, special workshops, and art courses. Each year, RYP serves over 300 students with the assistance of nearly 300 volunteers.

ArtWorks is a social enterprise founded by RYP in December 2012. Students create African necklaces, prayer flags, scented candles, and similar culturally relevant products. This year, ArtWorks is expanding from festival sales to multiple consignment agreements, gallery showings, and an online store.
