Social Innovation Lab Accepting Applications at JHU 2016/17 SIL apps open at JHU AND Impact Bootcamp is Oct 1

Johns Hopkins University’s Social Innovation Lab (SIL) is now accepting applications for their 2016-17 Cohort (here). They are accepting up to 10 promising social ventures (non-profit or for-profit) working in Baltimore or elsewhere. Selected ventures participate in their program for six months and receive funding, mentorship, office space, and more. Anyone in the Baltimore area may apply.


The Social Innovation Lab (SIL) at Johns Hopkins University accelerates ventures that create change and opportunity in Baltimore and beyond. SIL does this by providing funding, mentorship, office space, and workshops, to help innovative non-profits, mission-driven companies, and disruptive technologies develop and grow into thriving, sustainable ventures that make a measurable impact.


For those that would like to experience Social Innovation Lab without the 6-month commitment, JHU is hosting Impact BootcampOctober 1, 2016.


This Bootcamp is a one-day, condensed version of Johns Hopkins program for people who want to gain or enhance the skills essential for launching and leading a community project, nonprofit, or mission-driven business. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

The Horizons Fall Fellowship supports 10 outstanding university students in their pursuit to become tomorrow's leaders in technology. The program is a part-time 6 month experience that teaches software engineering and provides students with the network and perspective needed to launch their careers in tech. The program fits around a regular school year class schedule and requires no prior computer science or programming knowledge. It is open to current university students of all ages. Students develop the arsenal of highly employable software engineers as well as the perspective of entrepreneurs.

Application Process/Criteria

-Currently enrolled in a 4-year university program

-Series of fit and technical interviews 

Applications are on a rolling basis. The final deadline is July15th 2016 but we encourage students to apply sooner as the program is already filling up.

The Hacker-In-Residence program brings students up to work with their start-up for 3 days at Princeton University. Students are tasked with personal projects and learn about entrepreneurship. These students are provided housing, meals and travel reimbursement as well.

UMBC students showcase innovative ideas.
On Wednesday, April 20th, a full house of supporters turned out for the third annual Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition (CBIC). Coordinated by UMBC’s Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship, and made possible by a generous gift from alumnus and serial entrepreneur Greg Cangialosi, the CBIC offers students an opportunity to experience the process of planning a start-up business.

This year, thirty (30) ideas were submitted to the competition and the top seven (7) were selected to go to the final competition. The finalists pitched their ideas to a panel of experienced judges consisting of Josh Goldberg, CEO of the Panther Angels, Dr. Gloria Jacobovitz, Technology Manager, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab , and Jeff Kurtzman, a serial e-commerce entrepreneur and consultant. All of the judges are also members of the Baltimore Angels.

Teams were comprised of UMBC undergraduate and graduate students, and each was paired with a business mentor to help them further develop and polish their idea prior to the final competition.

Stakes were high with cash awards of $5,000 for 1st place, $2,000 for 2nd place and $1,000 for 3rd place, as well as membership to Betamore, a Federal Hill based incubator and educational facility co-founded by Cangialosi.

First place was awarded to PITCH (Preventing Injuries, Trauma and Cracks to the Head). The team’s idea reduces the chance of head trauma and skull fractures for baseball pitchers. They designed a protective device which is embedded in baseball caps which is both lightweight and natural in appearance. An enthusiastic presentation was given by Stefan Wroblewski and team members are Andrew Wallace, Michael Torres, Jezron Basbas and Baruch Weiner. In Stefan’s words, “It was awesome that Mr. Cangialosi was impressed with our business pitch. I felt he believed in our product and marketing strategy. With the prizes he offered, we now have a strong network in Baltimore to help us build our business.”

Second place was awarded to SupplySense, an idea developed by PhD student Filip Dabek. SuppySense is an app using state of the art sensors to track inventory usage to provide businesses with an optimal strategy for refill appointments. While designed for commercial use, Judge Dr. Gloria Jacobovitz described SupplySense as highly intelligent and remarked that she herself would love to have one in her kitchen. Dabek remarked, “Going through the Cangiolosi Business Innovation Competition (CBIC), UMBC allowed me to go through the process of formulating a business plan and prototype product, from which I learned a great deal and received excellent strategic mentorship from CBIC affiliated faculty. Through the knowledge that I gained from being a CBIC participant, I am now going to take my SupplySense idea to market.”

Finally, third place was awarded to Aerwell, a clean energy device that extracts clean and pure water from humidity in the air to provide fresh water and sustainable energy. The water can then be used either for drinking or for agricultural purposes. Bedford Boylston presented the idea for the team which consists of Marios Levi, Arthur Schorr, Terry Wasserleben, and Alexis Walmsley. Regarding the opportunity, Boylston said, “The competition gave me [us] an opportunity to present an idea of how to provide globally clean water to people in need. Also the condensation of water provides excess energy to be captured for electricity production. A simple device designed to solve a huge problem. Young people from UMBC will be needed to make this promising technology a reality”.

Participation in the competition is just the first phase of the business education the winning teams will experience. By far the most important part of the CBIC will be what comes next, the involvement in Betamore programming and events which will provide valuable connections to the Baltimore business community.

Numerous webinars, books, and even college courses attempt to teach thebasics of starting a business, but starting a tech company has a uniquesetof challenges.  Given the increasing level of world-wide competition due torelatively low barriers to entry for most companies that compete online, itcan be especially difficult to create a product that is differentiatedenough to attract the attention of investors, or even customers.  Once youcome up with the idea for the next big thing, how are you going to protectit?  Should you partner with an expert (or numerous experts) or go italone?  How do you get your product in the hands of your end user with somuch competition?  Is it possible to attract start-up capital outside ofSilicon Valley or NYC? These are just a few of the topics we will discussduring this workshop, but feel free to bring questions!

What is the Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition (CBIC)? 

 

CBIC is an opportunity for UMBC graduate and undergraduate students who aspire to fulfill entrepreneurial pursuits. Participants will experience the process of planning a startup business by submitting a competitive and realistic 3-5 page business plan and qualifiers will present their idea in a final competition. 

 

NOTE: the CBIC requires that technology (mobile, web, etc), be a focus of your startup idea. 

 

Who should participate? 

 

Any UMBC student (full or part time, graduate or undergraduate) with a dream, of launching his or her own business and who plans on actively pursuing that dream. 

 

Why participate? 

 

The CBIC is a next level competition designed to give aspiring entrepreneurs a real-life opportunity to experience every aspect of launching a startup. The competition will pair you with business mentors from the community and will give you practice presenting your idea to a panel of experts. It will also provide "real world" experience and helpful feedback. In addition to mentorship from real world experts, the program is also designed to connect students to the local entrepreneurial ecosystem. 

 

Winners also get seed funding for their businesses, and support from our sponsors including:

·         Accounting advice 

·         Membership at the award winning Betamore campus in Federal Hill 

·         Fundraising advice & pitch practice with member of the Baltimore Angels
