Stephen shares his experiences using social media
Stephen Riddle, Founder of Enigmas Edge Design, LLC and the creator of Dipgrips, spoke to the UMBC community about his experiences using social media to market his product.

Stephen started off by talking about the many social media sites available for people who want to advertise their products or ideas. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+ Periscope, YouTube, and blogs only cover a small portion of the social media realm. Stephen suggested choosing a handful of social media sites that you are comfortable using, as well as ones your audience will use get the most benefits.
He then explained what social media marketing could do for your business.

Stephen then explained some tips and tricks on how to utilize some of the more popular social media sites to promote your product or idea.
- Facebook- Facebook, being one of the biggest social media websites, is the easiest way to advertise your product or idea. However, Facebook’s popularity creates a lot of noise that can annoy an audience. You want to make sure you only post something once a day so your audience is not overwhelmed, which means you don't interact with your audience as much as other social media sites. But don’t let this discourage you, your ad is reaching people regardless of the interaction. Facebook also has built in Ad management and page setup that you can create/subscribe to (for free or for a small price).
- Instagram- There is SO much interaction happening on Instagram. Pictures make an account seem more personal so an audience is more likely to engage with the content posted. Because of this, don’t be afraid to post “too much”. Instagram is so popular that you can post as much as you want without upsetting your customer base. Hashtags are also an amazing tool to reach more people who aren’t following your account directly.
- Twitter- Hashtags are a very valuable tool to reach many people. You can also post constantly on Twitter without being overwhelming to your audience. And like Facebook, there is little interaction.
No matter what social media site you choose, the content you post must be exciting, short, and have a call to action. You want your content to catch a customer’s attention through all the other noise on the site. You also have to remember that people attention spans are short, so if you’re posting a video it shouldn’t be more than one and a half minutes long. The last, and most important thing, is to ask your audience questions and give them a call to action. Questions encourage a conversation on the social media while the call to action gets them to “Follow” you or “Check Out” your site.
Of course, before you set off on your social media adventures you must be prepared. Make sure your idea or product is ready for the outside world to view. You don’t want to be adverting something that isn’t polished or be overwhelmed if your product is a big hit. You also need to be prepared to fail. Failure at some point in this journey is bound to happen, so when it does brush it off and learn from it.

She will discuss how she scaled their flagship mentoring program to 3 states and how Remixeducation has been able to expand their services to reach the unique needs of urban students and communities. She will also discuss how RemixEducation uses the design thinking process within the organization to innovate and improve programming.
About Shayla:
Shayla is committed to ensuring that all children regardless of race or background have access to a quality education. This year she was granted the CityBridge Education Innovation Fellowship in which she is conducting a Blended Learning Pilot in an attempt to redesign the 9th grade ELA experience at her school. Additionally, she recently published her first book, Making College Happen, which is a how to guide for first -generation college students attempting to navigate the college application process.

Stephen Riddle is the Founder of Enigmas Edge Design, LLC, an exercise equipment business. He started his Dipgrips project a few years ago. When he thought of the idea, he didn't want it to just be a story he told his kids. He wanted it to become a reality, so he went after his dream! After a lot of learning, sacrificing, sleepless nights, anxiety, excitement, failures and successes, he brought his project to market last May. He reaches his customers through social media marketing exclusively. Facebook ads have been his weapon of choice so far. He's excited to show you what he's learned through his business.

Applications for UMBC's Joseph and Frieda Faiman Eisenberg/VPC Endowed Scholarship are now available!
The purpose of the Joseph and Frieda Faiman Eisenberg/VPC Endowed Scholarship is to provide a $500 scholarship award to an outstanding UMBC undergraduate interested in becoming an entrepreneur.
This award is associated with UMBC’s Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship. The scholarship will be awarded for the 2015-2016 academic year.
The student selected to receive this award should:
- Be a full-time degree-seeking student in good standing at UMBC
- Submit a personal statement about their interest in entrepreneurship
- Submit a resume
- Demonstrate an interest in becoming an entrepreneur
- Have a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average

Student-designed game to be sold on biggest gaming platform!
UMBC's HueBots is going to market, big-time.
We are so proud to hear that UMBC students are (once again) achieving entrepreneurial success. Check out what UMBC's Game Developer's Club is up to!!
The UMBC team that made it to the “final four” of college video game development is launching the game that took them there. HueBots earned praise at the Microsoft Imagine Cup worldwide technology competition last April in San Francisco. Now, after a vetting process that involved online voting, the game is set to be released August 26, 2015, on Steam, the biggest PC gaming platform in the world. It will also be available in Apple’s App Store, on GooglePlay, and on the HueBots’ website.
HueBots features friendly, colorful robots that players build and use to solve puzzles that revolve around the bots’ affinity for color-matched objects.
The Retriever team that developed the game includes lead Michael Leung ’16, computer science; Tad Cordle ’16, computer engineering; and Erika Schumacher ’17; and Jasmine Martin ’15, both visual arts students with interactive media concentrations. This summer Graham Dolle ’18, computer science, contributed special visual effects.
The team has developed versions of the game for PC, Mac, Android and iOS devices. The PC version of the game is priced at $4.99; the mobile version is $1.99.
To get word out, the team is tapping into YouTube’s Let’s Play channels as well as reaching out to video gaming websites and bloggers. HueBots was also featured at the Gamescape expo during Baltimore’s Artscape festival this July. Cordle expects the availability of the game on Steam will provide the biggest single boost for HueBots, and he shared his excitement that the Steam announcement came much sooner than expected.

Have an idea on how to improve or change the world? Burning up with ideas to help the environment, society, business, your friends, social media or anything else you can dream up? UMBC wants to give you $750 for telling us your idea! How can you win cash for your innovative solution? Read on!
The UMBC Idea competition is designed to challenge you to think about problems and opportunities facing society. If UMBC is one of the most innovative schools in the nation, then UMBC students are just the kind of innovators that can really change the world. Now’s your chance to make it happen.
Submit your idea online via the entry form. And you can also grab your camera or smartphone and post a YouTube video in which you pitch your idea. The top entries will be judged, live, by a panel of professionals and alumni along with a crowd of students at the final competition held November 12, 2015, in the Sports Zone in The Commons. The top 3 winners, determined by the results of student and panel voting, will receive cash prizes up to $750.
How to Enter
To enter the competition, complete the UMBC Idea Competition Entry Form, which asks you to (i) describe a problem or opportunity, and (ii) describe your idea for addressing it. Submission forms will be limited to one page, so you will need to articulate the problem you have identified and your idea succinctly. You will also be allowed to post a video to YouTube in which you can personally pitch your idea to the campus. The videos are not required, but they are encouraged as an effective way to communicate ideas to the review committee. YouTube videos are limited to 60 seconds and creativity is encouraged. Videos longer than 60 seconds will not be considered by the judges.
