Student Entrepreneur Spotlight: Kyran Richardson

<Tagline>Insource: Revolutionizing teamwork among university students</Tagline>

For those of you that don't know Kyran Richardson, he is a recent UMBC graduate, who majored in Financial Economics. I had the pleasure of having a few entrepreneurial classes with him, and he has a passion and drive for success that is unrelenting.

Kyran and his team have been developing InSource for nearly a year. They are very happy to announce that UMBC will be their test campus and expect to be launching it in the upcoming semester. When it does, we'll make sure you know about it and get thr opportunity to be one of the first users.

But for know, let's learn a bit about Kyran and InSource.

1. Tell us a little about your company, and what makes your business

unique?

Insource is a revolutionary new tool that will organize the ideas and pre-startup chaos in the academic community. We will provide a social web-based space for idea creators and idea seekers to come together. Our space is entirely focused on the academic community and can be used by students, faculty, and academic partners. Users will be able to search for individuals that possess specific skills required to advance their projects, they will also be able to be found by students simply by the title of their projects and their specified skills. Insource is not only a place for students to connect but also where innovative ideas become reality.

2. Are there classes on campus that have helped you the most?

I would say that ENTR 320/ Entrepreneurial Marketing with Greg Cangialosi was the class that helped me out the most. That class allowed me to experience what it was like to work with a group to create a product and be able to market it using many different tools. Also, luckily for me I was in a group with members that had recently won the UMBC idea competition and I think knowing someone who came up with a unique idea and actually pursued it really pushed me to do the same.

3. What are some resources that have helped you the most?

(Magazines, Books, Websites…)

A book that I think anyone starting a company should read is Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely, it explains a lot about human decision making and understanding how people make decisions is really important when trying not only to market yourself but also your companies product.

4. What is the toughest decision you have had to make in the last 6

months?

The toughest decision I had to make in the past 6 months was whether or not to take part of the business plan competition while taking 6 classes and working in my last semester. But hey, I guess hard work really does pay off! [Insource was the winner of CBIC]

5. What advice would you give other student entrepreneurs?

Don't just try to work smarter and not harder, do both.

Pay attention to detail

Meet as many people as possible

Branding yourself is just as important as branding your business (You don't buy a suit from a bum on the street, you buy a suit from a guy in a suit)

Mojoe, coffee when you want it!

<Tagline>Help UMBC Entrepreneurs fund their caffinated innovation</Tagline>

I am a huge coffee addict, and a bit of a coffee snob. Caffeine
addiction is a pretty common occurrence among entrepreneurs, especially in the
start up phase of a business concept.

I know its summer and not everyone is on campus, but I've
been here a lot. The Starbucks is closed, and the other coffee shops close at 3
pm. It would be great if I could brew a fresh cup of coffee anywhere.

I’m not the only one. In fact, a number of UMBC students identified
and tackled this problem; Mojoe lets you brew your own coffee on the go.

Mojoe is a travel mug-sized portable coffee maker that heats
any temperature water from any source to brew up the perfect cup of joe.

Here’s how it works. You load in your favorite coffee (Zeke’s
is pretty good, but Green Mountain may be one of my favorites that easy to find),
to the filter, cream and sugar if you’re into that, and hit the road. Add water
    whenever and wherever you can.

Watch the Mojoe Information Video

The system powers up, using a rechargeable battery, a 12V
car adapter, or a wall adapter, and heats up the water; your coffee is heated
to about 200 degrees and mixes in your cream and sugar. After its done brewing,
you can comfortably enjoy the coffee directly from your Mojoe.

The founders of Mojoe, Joseph Hyman and Ezekiel Kolajo, have
launched their crowdfunding campaign and need your help. I know that times are
tough and as a college student money can be tight. In a crowdfunding campaign,
I can tell you that every little bit helps. Even if you don’t have cash to
invest in Mojoe, the secret to a successful crowdfunding campaign is sharing. We
all know people who love coffee…let them know about Mojoe.

Student Entrepreneur Spotlight: Ethan Steininger

<Tagline>Student CEO changing the health field & gets noticed for it</Tagline>

Recently, we sat down to discuss his company and to get some words of wisdom from Steininger.

1. Tell us a little about your company, and what makes your business

unique?

High medical bills are the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the U.S. A primary cause of this is the lack of price and quality transparency in the medical industry. Two providers in Maryland can charge significantly different prices for the same procedure with the same quality of care. Patients typically do not know the cost or quality of a procedure until after they receive the bill.

A better, more transparent way to shop for healthcare is clearly needed.

With Compared Care, you can research your procedures before committing, in order to make more intelligent medical decisions. We take into account the user's required: proximity, budget and quality of care to find the most suitable procedures conducted by the best providers.

2. Are there classes on campus that have helped you the most?

Compared Care is a coalition of many experiences throughout my academic career. From the managerial aspect learned from IS 300, to the user interface and user experience concepts learned from IS 303, there hasn't been a single most important class.

Many of my Health Administration courses have made me more aware of this price/quality disparity, and the need for my proposed solution.

My Entrepreneurship class gave me the push to pursue my idea, as was facilitated by my professor's insight.

Novel Ideas Find Success at Inaugural CBIC

<Tagline>Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition Winners Announced</Tagline>

On Thursday, April 24th, a full house of supporters turned out for the inaugural Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition (CBIC). Coordinated by UMBC’s Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship, and made possible by a generous gift from alumnus and serial entrepreneur Greg Cangialosi, the CBIC offers students an opportunity to experience the process of planning a start-up business.

As the members of the teams arrived, a blend of confidence and nervousness filled the air. Eight (8) teams were selected out of 29 applicants to share their business ideas with a panel of three judges, John Cammack, Hugh Evans and Vince Talbert, all successful entrepreneurs and members of the angel investment group The Baltimore Angels. Teams were comprised primarily of UMBC undergraduate and graduate students, and each was paired with a business mentor to help them further develop and polish their idea prior to the final competition.

Stakes were high with cash awards of $5,000 for 1st place, as well as membership to Betamore, a Federal Hill based incubator and educational facility co-founded by Cangialosi.

First place went to Kyran Richardson and Percy Addo for their development of InSource, a web-based space that brings skills together with people. InSource helps students and faculty know what skills students have so finding a partner to
work on a project, research, or company is easy and seamless. Richardson said the idea came about when he and his roommate were trying to find students on
campus to collaborate on some business ideas they had, but due to a lack of
connections they were unable to find the skills they required. Knowing there is
an abundance of talent around, they wanted to make the matching process easier in the future. When asked about the experience of participating in the CBIC, Richardson and Addo said they were “humbled by winning first place while
competing against some of the most innovative students at UMBC.”

Second place went to Ethan Steininger for his company Compared Care whose mission is to make the healthcare world more transparent. There is a large geographical disparity within the healthcare industry and the same medical procedure will cost significantly more in one area vs another. ComparedCare.com will allow users to upload several variables to help them locate the best alternative. According to Steininger, “The CBIC was the ideal experience I needed to get started in entrepreneurship. It helped to validate my idea of Compared Care and placing second made it seem more legitimate. My mentor, UMBC alumus Andrew Pollack, was a perfect match and I will continue to communicate with him throughout this startup process.”

Third place went to Markus Proctor and his team consisting of Walter Pearson, Kimberly Hodges, and Harjit Singh for their company, EduPal, which is working to revolutionize students’ study habits and improve planning by creating an online tool to help them manage their time more effectively. Markus commented, “Being a part of the CBIC was definitely an exciting and memorable experience. The atmosphere was amazingly positive and I enjoyed networking with some of the brightest entrepreneurs on campus and in the region. Having the opportunity to share my passion with students, faculty, and members of The Baltimore Angels was worth every hour of practice."

Participation in the competition is just the first phase of the business education the winning teams will experience. By far the most important part of the CBIC will be what comes next, the involvement in Betamore programming and events which will provide valuable connections to the Baltimore business community.

Following the event Cangialosi said, “I am so proud of all the students who participated in the competition. It was exciting to see that innovation and the
entrepreneurial spirit is running high at UMBC! I look forward to the next competition and taking it to the next level.”

A venture capitalist once told Melinda she "didn't fit the pattern". She doesn't. She's not an engineer. She doesn't spend any time in her garage, and ramen? Too many carbs. Women have a hard time raising the capital they need to launch high-growth technology businesses and Melinda is going to talk about how women can reinvent the rules - sharing her most valuable lessons (most of them from failing). Success is all about being resilient, agile and non-stop learning. She'll tell you what not to do - as much as what to do!

Entrespace Open for use!

<Tagline>Come one, come all entrepreneurial students to your new home</Tagline>

I know it has been a long time in the making, but we are happy to announce that Entrespace is now officially open and ready for use.

For those that don't know about Entrespace, it is a space for UMBC students interested in entrepreneurial learning, collaborating, and networking.

While the space isn't completely ready, in the heart of entrepreneurship, we are launching it a little early to see how we will use it and how best we can improve. Of course, there are a few rules for it's use:

Rules:

EVERY PERSON MUST SCAN THEIR RED CARD TO ENTER

We need to show that the space is being used, otherwise we could loose it. Please don't hold the door open for people.

KEEP THE SPACE NEAT & CLEAN

You don't need/want us to clean up after you. We're all responsible enough to pick up after ourselves.

STAY ON TASKish

We built this space to work on entrepreneurial projects. This space is meant for that use, and while no one has issue with people hanging out there, don't turn it into the RLC.

If you see people being crazy, ask them to leave. I know this is easier said than done, and no one wants to be that guy/gal, but this space is being given to us for a specific use by the college. If it isn't being used for that reason, it can be taken away.

Ok, now onto the good stuff.

Where to find it?

In the old theater building, also called the Academic Services Building. Walk in the door closest to the Commons Garage, walk down the hall past the theater entrance and turn left. Walk all the way down the hall, through a door, and you will see it at the end. Room 139.

It's easier than it sounds.

When is it open?

Monday - Friday 8 am - 11 pm.

What to Expect in the future?

The official opening of the space will be within the next month and will be a huge grand opening celebration. The date hasn't been confirmed, we'll let you know when it is.

Throughout this semester, in addition to the Entrepreneurial Speaker Series, we will be hosting some local movers and shakers to provide our community with training in specific areas and topics. This is where you come in. Feel free to let us know if there is a topic that you are interested in learning about or if you have people that would be interested in speaking. Obviously we will need more than one person interested to make it worth while.

I know that some of the entrepreneurial teachers will be having their office hours in Entrespace throughout the semester as well. If you don't know them all yet, I'd encourage you to do so.

Questions, comments...do so below.
