ESI Flies High in NASA's PACE-PAX Field Campaign

From August to October 2024, the Earth and Space Institute (ESI) leads the AirHARP2 participation during the NASA PACE Post-launch Airborne eXperiment (PACE-PAX) field campaign at Edwards AFB, CA. The objective of PACE-PAX is to validate the measurements and science products of NASA's Plankton Aerosol Cloud ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission, an advanced ocean and atmosphere observation satellite in low Earth orbit. AirHARP2 includes a copy of the HARP2 multi-angle polarimeter instrument on the PACE satellite, and several other remote sensors that measure from the ultraviolet to the shortwave infrared. The ESI contributed HARP2 to the PACE mission, which marks the first university payload on a flagship NASA Earth sciences mission in space.

ESI chief engineer Dominik Cieslak (left) and mechanical engineer Ian Decker (right) integrated the AirHARP2 instrument (center) into the pod of the NASA ER-2 high altitude aircraft in early August.
ESI scientists participate in PACE Hack Week at UMBC!

From August 4 - 8, 2024, PACE Hack Week was held at UMBC in the ILSB, with 41 participants (from 89 applicants). Ten people traveled from abroad, and six were associated with NOAA. Per Dr. Jeremy Werdell (616/GSFC), "A group of early adopters were launched into rapid exploration of data products from the PACE observatory just 178 days into its mission. The event was supported by an award from the Ocean Carbon and Biogeochemistry (OCB) Program at WHOI (funded by NSF, NASA, and others)."

Lorraine Remer gave a guest lecture, and ESI's Brent McBride, Anin Puthukkudy, and Carissa Arillo were on hand throughout the event, in addition to participation from GESTAR II scientists (Ian Carroll, Ivona Cetinic, Andy Sayer, Susanne Craig, Sean Foley, and James Allen, local support and participation included Pengwang Zhai, and tutorial prep by Meng Gao (616/SSAI).

Dr. Werdell (616/GSFC), Project Scientist for PACE, explains "The overarching goal was to accelerate (and continue democratizing) the use of PACE data (along with any other observatory), with a focus on Jupyter notebooks and cloud data access from a cloud computing environment. The desired outcome was a series of usable workflows to be hosted publicly online, plus a series of recorded tutorials. The website for the event has all our Jupyter notebooks and lectures, and recordings will be posted once videos are edited. Participants self-organized into nine group projects related to the use of PACE data to explore a science question."

He added that "The mornings proceeded as 1) projects’ rose/thorn/bud reporting, 2) a 45-minute science lecture, and 3) two hours of project time. The afternoons included 1) a pair of one-hour “coding” tutorials and 2) two hours of project time."
ESI Director participates in UMBC's 8th Earth Day Symposium

Among the many events held on Monday, April 29th,
during UMBC's 8th Earth Day Symposium, was Vanderlei Martins’
presentation, “The PACE Satellite.” Dr. Martins was the first of five speakers
who would contribute to the symposium. He is the Director of the Earth and
Space Institute at UMBC, a Physics professor, and a scientist with GESTAR II.
Dr. Martins and his team at UMBC built the Hyper-Angular Rainbow Polarimeter-2
(HARP2), which is currently onboard the PACE satellite (read more about HARP2
    and the PACE launch here).

The PACE satellite consists of three instruments, which are
complementary: the Ocean Color Instrument (OCI), HARP2, and the Spectro-polarimeter
for Planetary Exploration one (SPEX-one). Originally, PACE would have only
carried the OCI. However, with these three instruments’ combined measurements,
the data provided will be robust and will “provide worldwide usage of
information,” according to Dr. Martins. Learn more about these three instruments here. He emphasized that PACE has “unprecedented
capabilities covering ocean ecology, aerosol (amount and type), and land
    surface properties.”

Dr. Vanderlei Martins presenting "The PACE Satellite."

(Photo: A. Houghton.)
