How to College
Transitioning into college is not always easy… especially if you are the first in your family to attend, if you are a part of a marginalized community, or if you regularly find yourself with more questions than answers. Don’t worry, we are here to help!

Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging (i3b) has partnered with the Academic Success Center to bring you three sessions that focus on helping you develop the skills and tools you need to experience first-year success! Sessions will take place virtually on October 19 and 26 and November 2 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Not only will we explore academic success skills and principles, but we will also explore tools for navigating issues of discrimination, bias, and microaggressions within academic spaces, and focus on the many ways our identities are assets within the college environment.
  • Session 1 - How to College: Exploring tools for first-year students (THIS EVENT HAS PASSED)
    • This session will explore university resources, key skills for first-year transition success, and will connect attendees with upper-class students who will share their own stories and recommendations for first-year success.
  • Session 2 - How to College: Knowing What to Expect and How to Navigate Challenges  Oct. 26 5-6:30PM
    • This session will explore issues of bias, discrimination, and microaggressions - how they show up in university spaces, how to recognize them, and how to lessen their impact. Attendees will leave with tools and skills to help navigate identity-based challenges during their academic transition.
  • Session 3 - How to College: Bringing you into the classroom   Nov. 2 5-6:30PM
    • Have you heard of Cultural Wealth? Do you know that your identities are assets in university spaces? This session will explore the ways students bring Cultural Wealth into the classroom and will introduce attendees to returning students who have learned how to advocate for themselves and be authentic in classroom spaces despite sometimes being the only one who shares their identity.

What is Retriever Essentials you ask?


RETRIEVER ESSENTIALS: a faculty, staff, and student partnership to tackle food insecurity in our university community.

Many college students across the United States are classified as food insecure*, and UMBC is no exception. Lacking a steady source of nutritious meals can affect students’ physical and mental health, their grades, and their ability to engage in campus life.

Their mission is to develop a comprehensive program of resources which eliminates the immediate burden of food insecurity for UMBC members and connects them to ongoing support networks in order to enhance their academic retention and career success.

Brown Bag Lunch Discussion(Monday October 11) - Brown Bag Lunch Discussions were designed to create a safe space for first generation students here at UMBC to come together to discuss various topics regarding navigating institutional systems and structures. Discussion topics include, but not limited to, financial aid, graduate school admission process, academic success, positive mental health practices, study abroad opportunities, career development, etc.

The Center for Democracy and Civic Life is hostingDinner with Friends on Thursday, October 7 from 5 to 7 p.m., in partnership with the Student Government Association and the Graduate Student Association. 

 

Participants will take part in engaging, facilitated small group conversations about issues affecting the UMBC community and how we can move forward together. 

 

The small group discussion topics are:

  • Building community during and after the pandemic

  • Supporting mental health in challenging times

  • Promoting civic agency and engagement between elections

  • Fostering equity and inclusion

UMBC is going to be featured on an episode of The College Tour is a streaming TV show currently being shown on AmazonTV and Roku, as well as other streaming platforms. The show aims to speak to undergraduate and graduate students alike, by providing them with a ‘feeling’ of the university through their engaging and university-directed video segments.

We'll be filming our 1-hour episode this fall. Currently, we're looking for student cast members who can help us tell our UMBC story through a variety of short segments.

We'd love you to help us by either nominating a cast member or passing on the language about student auditions below to any students you think would be interested.
