What is a first-generation student?
UMBC defines a first generation student as anyone whose parent/guardian did not complete a bachelor's degree. First and second generation students are welcome to join!
Our mission is to support students who sometimes lack the information possessed by students who have the benefit of parents who have attended and completed college.

In coordination with the First-Generation Workgroup, Off-Campus Student Services is incredibly excited to announce the First-Generation Peer Mentoring Program (FGPMP).
Students interested in being a mentor or having a mentor should apply.
FGPMP is designed to support the success of current first-time and full-time first-generation students at UMBC. Students that take part in this program can expect to meet other first-generation students and become a part of a large, supportive community that works to share resources, find lasting friendships and connections, and create an impactful college experience.
Please be aware that in order to be a mentor, you must have completed at least one year as a student at UMBC and mentees must be within their first year at UMBC.
Participants of the FGPMP will also have the opportunity to take part in a series of activities and workshops designed to enrich students both personally and professionally.
Some additional benefits of taking part in the FGPMP include:
- Developing transferable and marketable skills to enhance professional experience
- Cultivation of leadership, self-management, and organizational skills
- Improved communication and interpersonal skills
- Greater self-efficacy and self-awareness
- An increased network of support
- Expanding your resume

UMBC Counseling Center Groups for Spring 2021

The UMBC Counseling Center is offering 7 counseling groups this Spring via WebEx. You can find information about them on the attached flyer.
Two groups starting within the next 2 weeks are:
Moving Forward with Purpose Group - a 5-week group teaching students strategies to improve their motivation and increase their sense of control or purpose in life. Any students looking for help with "starting fresh" in 2021 or who are struggling with procrastination or career/academic indecision could benefit greatly from the group!
You've Got This Group - a 4-week group the Counseling Center has run for several years now that has been very successful in helping students develop skills for coping with stress, anxiety, and depression. Please consider it if you know of students who struggle with becoming easily overwhelmed or who find that emotional distress gets in the way of their academic success or personal well-being
The other groups include Graduate Student Support Group, Trans Support Group, and Women of Color Support Group. Please take a moment to read about them in the attached flyer.

IMPORTANT: Testing Instructions for Commuter Students
Happy first day of class! If you have registered for on-campus COVID-19 testing this week, please see below for instructions on installing the MG Scanner app. Please note: It is imperative that you install this app before leaving your home.
Please look for an important email from MG Scanner Mobile (MG Scanner) and open it for instructions on how to download the new app (MarylandGenomics SampleScanner) required for COVID testing this semester.
This email will contain a unique activation QR code that
must NOT BE SHARED with anyone else!

A few other important details to remember about on-campus testing:
This will be a non-observed, self-administered test with a nasal swab.
When you arrive on campus, proceed to the Commons Garage.
A volunteer will provide you a testing kit at the entrance.
Park in any available spot and perform the test. If you are unable to use the app, please turn on your hazard lights and someone will assist you.
After your test is completed, exit the garage and deposit your vial into the collection bin at the exit.
Your testing results will be posted to your COVID Compliance Card in your myUMBC profile. It generally takes 72 hours to receive your results.

RENWAL | Living Well Aware
As we begin the new year and the Spring semester approaches, it is a time of reflection. Many people take the beginning of a new year to review the past. Others view it as a time of renewal. Last semester was likely an academic experience like you’ve never experienced.

If you were happy with your Fall 2020 outcomes, now is the time to evaluate what aided in your success. If you were not happy with your outcomes, it is a time to reflect on the challenges you experienced and determine what resources are available to enhance this semester. With challenges, come opportunities for growth and learning. If you didn’t succeed initially, you now have an opportunity to learn from the attempt and try again. Resilience is a hallmark of success.

Humans of UMBC: First-Gen Edition, networking opportunities to meet other First-Gen students, as well as faculty, staff and alumni, and informational postings of resources to support your success.
