We Won
We are thrilled to announce that The George and Betsy Sherman Center has been named a recipient of the 2026 Community Collaboration Challenge!
Out of over 700 applicants nationwide, our team was selected by the Partnership for Student Success to receive funding that will help us scale our impact for students in Baltimore.
With this support, we are launching the UMBC Summer Math Peer Tutoring project.
This initiative will:
1. Expand our existing Summer Math Program for Cherry Hill and Lakeland students.
2. Empower high school students from Baltimore area community schools to serve as tutors for 3rd-8th graders.
3. Bridge the gap to higher education by allowing high schoolers to work alongside UMBC university tutors.
A huge thank you to the Partnership for Student Success and the Leon Lowenstein Foundation for believing in our mission.

What is the Maryland Invention Convention(MIC)?
Empowering the Next Generation
We are excited to announce a new chapter for The George and Betsy Sherman Center at UMBC! Starting this Fall, the Sherman Center has become the official Maryland affiliate for Invention Convention Worldwide.
The Mission: Beyond Science Fairs
The Maryland Invention Convention (MIC) is a K-12 invention education program that goes beyond traditional science fairs. It is designed to instill problem-identification, critical thinking, and entrepreneurship skills in students.
Rather than just testing a hypothesis, students follow a 7-step invention process to solve real-world problems they see in their own lives or communities. They identify a challenge, conduct research, ideate, design, and ultimately build a functional prototype.
The program builds a "can-do" culture, preparing young people for the 21st-century workforce by:
Building Confidence: Students learn to present their ideas to industry leaders and expert judges.
Real-World Impact: Participants have the chance to secure patents, with nearly 30 students receiving USPTO patents through this ecosystem since 2018.
Global Reach: Top inventors from the Maryland competition can advance to the U.S. Nationals at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation.
Join us to explore how you can turn your passion into a career.
Date: February 28th
Time: 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Focus: Open to ALL majors interested in teaching certification.

Scholar Interviews: Formal interviews for those ready to become scholars.
Financial Support: Learn about various scholarship programs available to help fund your journey.
Community: Meet and chat with current scholars to hear about their experiences firsthand.
Family Welcome: Parents and families are encouraged to attend and learn alongside their students!

The Reach Together Tutoring Program is officially recruiting motivated UMBC students to serve as Math Coaches for the Spring 2026 semester!
Why Join Us?
As a Math Coach, you aren't just a tutor—you are a mentor. You'll provide targeted math intervention to elementary and middle school students, helping them build the confidence they need to succeed.
Gain Experience: Perfect for students interested in education, social work, or community leadership.
Direct Impact: Work with small groups (2-3 students) to ensure every child gets the attention they deserve.
Community Connection: Serve local schools in Baltimore City and Baltimore County
We are looking for dynamic individuals who can commit to the following:
Who: UMBC students.
Commitment: 2–3 times per week (45–60 minutes per session).
When: During the school day, through May 2026.
Where: Local elementary and middle schools (Grades 1–8)
Help us bridge the gap in math education. Your skills can change a student's academic trajectory.
Behind the Sherman Teacher Scholars Program at UMBC is a story of two people who believed that education is the most powerful tool for social justice.
George, a brilliant business leader and engineer, and Betsy, a passionate educator who began her career as Kentucky's first Head Start teacher, shared a simple but profound belief: Every child deserves an exceptional education.
George and Betsy Sherman didn't just want to fund a program, they wanted to spark a movement. By blending George's belief in excellence and Betsy's deep-rooted passion for early childhood education, they redefined what it means to support urban schools.
The Legacy they Built:
The Shermans shifted the narrative from "charity" to partnership. Because of George and Betsy, the connection between UMBC and Baltimore City schools has evolved into a national model for collaboration. They proved that when you invest in the person "leading instruction", you change the future of every student in the room.
