Hastings' research group is focused on using the nitrogen and oxygen stable isotopic composition of reactive nitrogen species to investigate variations in sources, oxidation chemistry, atmospheric transport, and deposition. This seminar will discuss recent method developments to capture gaseous nitrogen oxides in situ for determination of isotopic composition; approaches to laboratory versus field experiments for documenting isotopic signatures associated with emission sources; and applications of these techniques from wildfires to agricultural to urban-based emissions."</div><div><br></div><div>Biography:</div><div>Meredith Hastings is the George Ide Chace Professor of Physical Sciences at Brown University. She has a joint appointment in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences and the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society, an interdisciplinary research center focused on understanding interactions between natural, human and social systems. Prior to joining the faculty at Brown in 2008, Meredith was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington's Joint Institute for Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean (JISAO). She completed her Ph.D. at Princeton University, working with researchers in the Department of Geosciences and at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory. She is an NSF CAREER awardee, a recipient of the American Geophysical Union's Atmospheric Sciences Ascent Award and was named one of Insight into Diversity's 100 Most Inspiring Women in STEM. She is currently a co-PI of ADVANCEGeo (<a href="https://serc.carleton.edu/advancegeo/index.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">serc.carleton.edu/advancegeo</a>), a national program funded by NSF to transform workplace climate in the geosciences and other scientific fields through the development of bystander intervention and research ethics training in partnership with professional societies. She also serves as President of the non-profit Earth Science Women's Network (ESWN, <a href="http://www.eswnonline.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">www.eswnonline.org</a>), whose mission is to connect women in the Earth sciences to develop their careers, build community, provide informal mentoring and support, and facilitate professional collaborations. She is also a proud mom of two beautiful, middle-school aged daughters.</div><div><br></div><div>For more information on the GESTAR II Seminar Series, click <a href="https://gestar2.umbc.edu/gestar-ii-seminar-series/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">here</a>.</div><div><br></div></div>

    <p>Abstract:</p><p>This summer of 2023 was the hottest summer on record. Rising global temperatures have persisted since the last half century, but the trend is getting even more alarming. To quote from a recent NASA online publication "the top-five hottest Julys since 1880 have all happened in the past five years". There are several factors responsible for this rising trend, of which the most dominant is the atmospheric accumulation of long-lived greenhouse gases (particularly carbon dioxide CO2) that trap heat. Among the numerous sources of CO2, wildfires and other open burning come only second to fossil fuel burning. Authorities seek to improve "fire weather" forecasting for issuing warnings of potential wildfire threat to society on short-term basis, but what is even more important is understanding "fire climate" and how to reverse the increasing trend. We are contributing to this effort by creating the fire energetics and emissions research (FEER) project by which we seek to understand how active wildfires behave and what and how much hazardous pollutants they emit and the impacts of these on climate and humans.</p></div>

  <Title>SVS Products based on GEOS-CF Dataset by Knowland and Keller</Title>
  <Body>

    <div class="html-content"><div>"The Goddard Earth Observing System Composition Forecasting (GEOS-CF) system is a research model maintained by NASA's Global Modeling and Assimilation Office to help scientists understand the causes and impact of air pollution." The Scientific Visualization Studio (SVS) recently released <a href="https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/search/?datasets=1197" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">four visualizations</a> based on <a href="https://gmao.gsfc.nasa.gov/weather_prediction/GEOS-CF/data_access/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">the GEOS-CF dataset</a>, created in 2022 by K. Emma Knowland (610.1/MSU), Christoph Keller (610.1/MSU), and Robert Lucchesi. Each visualization focuses on four different chemical species and particles that contribute to air pollution. These SVS products also are based on the 2021 paper titled "Description of the NASA GEOS Composition Forecast Modeling System GEOS-CF v1.0," by <a href="https://gestar2.umbc.edu/directory/researchers-g-k/#Keller" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Keller, C.
