Feel like making a difference in your community? If you own a meal plan through UMBC, you are eligible to donate to our Save-a-Swipe program! You can donate 5-10 meals to Save-a-Swipe, where they will be pooled and delegated to students experiencing food insecurity later in the semester. We are very happy to announce that our program is back for the fall semester, and we look forward to how many lives we can change!

ALL current graduate students at UMBC interested in obtaining teaching experience to apply to be a SEA CIRTL Fellow for the Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) and the CIRTL programs at UMBC. SEA provides one-week class for middle and high school students on UMBC Campus. These classes help kids to stay engaged, have fun learning new skills, and get excited about higher education at UMBC. This is a win-win opportunity, if you are considering pursuing a teaching career or gaining extra certifications before graduating UMBC, this could be a great fit for you.
These SEA CIRTL Fellows will develop a
SEA one (1) week course in a topic of their choice with guided mentorship in Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 and implement the course with SEA in Summer 2026

DoIT Project Report: Updates from DoIT’s Project Management Office

We are excited to share our Academic Year 2024-2025 Project Report, highlighting key IT projects and initiatives completed over the past year. This report celebrates the progress made across multiple initiatives and the contributions of DoIT teams and campus partners.
This year's report features several major initiatives, including:
1) AI Adoption: myUMBC Answers & Campus Resources
DoIT introduced myUMBC Answers, an AI-powered search bar that helps students quickly find answers to common questions. Additional efforts included launching AI resources, piloting tools like Gemini and CoPilot, and supporting open-source AI testing.
2) NSF Grant for Campus Cyber Infrastructure: Upgrades to Research Storage
DoIT and the Division of Research & Creative Achievement, Information Systems, Computer Science launched the Retriever Research Storage System (R-RSTOR), adding 2.5 petabytes of storage to support data-intensive research, collaborations with UMCES, and seamless data mobility between on-prem and cloud systems.
3) Reports and Data Infrastructure Converted to New REX Environment
DoIT's Analytics & Business Intelligence team is modernizing UMBC's reporting infrastructure by converting legacy reports to Tableau, launching new visualizations, and creating a centralized reporting homepage. This is making data more accessible for decision-makers across campus and improving data infrastructure and long-term sustainability.
4) Registrar Classroom & Engineering Lecture Hall Upgrades
AV technology was upgraded in multiple Registrar-controlled classrooms and the Engineering 027 Lecture Hall, adding lecture capture and accessibility features to enhance teaching and learning experiences.
5) Sherman Hall Renovation: Phase I
DoIT supported Phase 1 of the Sherman Hall renovation by equipping classrooms and offices with network, AV, and telecom technology. Phase 2 begins this fall, bringing new classrooms and gathering spaces by 2026.

About the DoIT Project Management Office: In the fall of 2023, DoIT established a Project Management Office (PMO) to ensure consistent project management processes, align project objectives with divisional and university strategic goals, and enhance stakeholder communication. The PMO has made significant strides in building a project management framework in DoIT to better support our campus partners in critical IT projects.

Dissertation House Graduate Writing Retreat
Writing intensive event for master and doctoral students
Grad Student & Postdoc Development (GSPD) is excited to invite you to the newly revamped Dissertation House! For over 20 years, the program has supported graduate students; now, they are updating it to better meet the evolving needs of our dynamic graduate school community.

The October Dissertation House will be held on October 2nd and 3rd at UMBC, Commons Building, Room 329.
What is Dissertation House?
This is a free, two-day, writing-intensive event designed for all master's and Ph.D. students working on a significant writing project, whether it's a master's thesis, a research publication, a doctoral research proposal, or a dissertation. We've created a space to help you focus, free from distractions, and to give you the dedicated time you need to make significant progress.
Two Levels of Engagement
We are offering two different options to ensure you get the support that's right for you. All participants will work in the same space and attend workshops tailored to the academic progress of those in attendance. These workshops are designed to help you overcome writing roadblocks, improve your relationship with your advisors, learn project management skills, identify resources, etc.
Level 1: The Writing Intensive
This is a two-day event from 9 AM to 4 PM, providing a dedicated writing space and an accountability group to help you stay on track. This is ideal for students who face challenges setting aside focused time for their writing. You must plan to attend both days, full-time.
Level 2: Personalized Coaching (Not required to participate, but very beneficial, and limited space is available- 10 spots!)
In addition to participating in everything from the Level 1 Writing Intensive, Level 2 participants will get personalized support from our dissertation coach. Our coach provides specialized, one-on-one assistance to students completing a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation. To be eligible for Level 2, you will complete a supplemental part of the Dissertation House interest form that asks you to upload a writing sample. This gives the coach an idea of your writing style and how to tailor support for you. The coaching session helps you overcome writing challenges, improve productivity, and opens the door to keep working with the coach for the rest of the year after attending Dissertation House, for free!
Important Details
Space is limited due to room capacity, so please fill out this easy-to-complete form to let us know you are interested in attending. Please save the dates and plan to attend the full two days. We know it's a significant time commitment, but it has proven to be incredibly effective for those who need a focused environment to advance their writing.
Here's what previous participants had to say about the event:
"I have achieved more this week than I would have in a typical month. Having professionals on-hand to assist me, and having structured time to do the work has been invaluable." (Carter-Veale et al., 2016).
"I had nothing on paper, I now have an overall outline and I feel that I will be able to get finished now. This workshop has helped me become 'unblocked.' I have been at UMBC for 4 ½ years and was in danger of just quitting." (Carter-Veale et al., 2016).
Decisions will be made by September 26th, so we are closing the application on September 25th.
