amplifying email sent to UMBC international students

Recently, we have gotten some questions that were largely answered in the below email that went out to all UMBC international students on 6 Dec 2024. In case you missed it, we wanted to share it here:

Dear International Students,

UMBC’s Center for Global Engagement wishes to remind all international students planning winter break travel to review the travel reminders that apply to enrolled F-1 students and students pursuing post-graduation OPT or STEM OPT. Specifically, be sure to check that you have a travel endorsement on page 2 of your Form I-20 that will still be valid on the date you return to the U.S. And be sure to check the expiration date of your F-1 visa to be sure it will be valid on the date you plan to return.

Additionally, we wish to address concerns we have heard related to several news outlets reporting that some universitiesare sharing special guidance with international students and employees planning to travel over the winter break. Specifically, these universities are advising travelers to consider returning to the U.S. prior to the presidential inauguration on January 20, 2025, in order to avoid the impacts of any executive actions taken by the incoming Trump administration that could impact travel.

To be clear, President-elect Trump and members of his transition team have not issued any official announcements regarding forthcoming policy changes that would directly impact international students, faculty, and staff. However, as is the case with all presidential transitions, a new administration will lead to personnel changes within government agencies, such as the U.S. Department of State. These changes could result in longer wait times for visa issuance or renewal. Additionally, executive actions taken by a new administration can result in immediate changes to policies, but such changes must be consistent with existing law.

All international students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to consider these factors in finalizing any potential travel plans for the winter break. Ultimately, your travel plans are yours to make, and you should feel free to arrange them as you see fit.

Please continue to monitor your UMBC email account closely for important messages from the Center for Global Engagement, as that is the official means by which we will alert you of any actual changes in immigration policy as well as immediate actions to be taken. Additionally, these emails will include links to updated guidance on our website.

Should you have any questions about your individual travel plans, please feel free to contact our advising staff. We wish safe travels to those choosing to travel during the winter break, and we hope that all members of our community have a chance to rest and recharge before the Spring 2025 semester begins.

We are proud to announce that Debbie Michaels has been awarded the DoIT Gritty Award for her outstanding work in inventory management.

Debbie’s efforts as the property custodian for DoIT, and the successful and timely completion of the FY23 sensitive and FY24 capital inventory cycles have been outstanding. Of all custodians across campus Debbie has been charged with one of the largest, but most mobile, departmental inventories of any single person. Despite these challenges, she managed to complete the task with only six missing items. In addition, Debbie has completely modernized the process by which DoIT and many other departments handle the inventory process. She has collaborated with Asset Management and the Business Systems Group to help create campus-wide Docusign forms for inventory management control, moving away from the cumbersome paper process. Additionally, she implemented electronic scanning methods for sighting equipment. These major improvements have made the inventory process more effective and efficient. Congratulations on a job well done! Debbie is much appreciated.

For her exceptional efforts and commitment to excellence, we are proud to present Debbie Michaels with the DoIT Gritty Award. Congratulations, Debbie!

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a five-day immersive learning
experience in which UMBC undergraduate and graduate students explore the
systemic and human dimensions of complex social issues in Baltimore.
Participants build connections with local leaders, organizations, and
policy makers and develop a sophisticated understanding of available
resources and challenges. The program helps participants identify
          pathways to long-term community engagement.

This year’s ASB program will take place from Monday, March 17 – Friday, March 21, 2025. ASB
participants spend much of the program in small groups (co-led by
undergraduate students trained by the Center for Democracy and Civic
Life) focused on exploring a specific topic in depth. ASB 2025 groups
          will focus on:
