We are excited to announce that Regina Clowser, Dan Loftus, and Tim Boyle are the recipients of the October Gritty Award!

The Division of Information Technology’s Gritty Award recognizes the outstanding work within the Division and the positive impact individuals have on the campus. 

After over four years of dedicated effort, the legacy Rolm phones on campus have all been successfully replaced with new Cisco VoIP phones. This remarkable achievement began in 2018 with a pilot program at IMET, which gained momentum during the 2020 pandemic to address the urgent need for remote and hybrid work solutions.

Regina and her team meticulously collaborated with every academic and administrative department, not only documenting and inventorying existing phones but also facilitating a smooth transition to the new system. This process involved working closely with departments to assess their future needs and promoting the adoption of the Webex softphone. This thoughtful approach provided departments with tailored phone solutions and saved the campus thousands of dollars in unnecessary phone handsets.

Congratulations Regina, Dan, Tim, and their team of students for their outstanding commitment to the campus community!

The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for Winter Orientation Advisors! Advisors meet with incoming undergraduate students VIRTUALLY during the month of January in one-on-one sessions to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary!

Besides compensation, this is a rare chance for graduate students to gain professional and interpersonal experience. Depending on your field, your time as a student may not open you up to many client-facing interactions, and this is a pathway to gaining that experience. If you are considering a career in academia, meanwhile, advising experience is highly sought-after in faculty openings.

Advisors are eligible to be compensated at the rate of $100 per afternoon session and $50 per evening or morning session, with the opportunity to work several sessions during the month. Participants are also eligible to earn the Orientation Advisor microcredential! More information on microcredentials and Digital Badging can be found here: https://badges.umbc.edu/

We are offering informational sessions for anyone interested or who even just MIGHT be interested in finding out about this exciting opportunity to expand their skillsets, make meaningful connections, serve their departments, and get paid! No RSVP necessary.

2. Do Not Reuse Passwords:

  • Use different secure passwords for all of your personal, banking, and UMBC accounts. If one password were to appear in a data breach that you actively use in other accounts, attackers may try to use this password to access these accounts.

  • A password manager can be used to manage your different passwords easily. For an additional level of security for sensitive accounts, you can store part of the password in the password manager and add additional characters to the password when you are logging in. 

3. Do Not Use Similar Passwords:

  • When changing your password, UMBC will not let you use a password that has been previously set.

  • Refrain from using your old passwords and slightly modifying them. For example, if your previous password was D0gL0vEr1, do not change the new password to D0gL0vEr2. This makes it easier for the hacker to guess the new password if they already know the previous password.

Please consider nominating yourself for the position of Secretary of the Graduate Student Association! As a member of the GSA Executive Council, you would be in a position of service and support to the GSA. If you are elected, you will be in training/shadowing the current Secretary in November and will be in the role from 1 Dec 2024 through 30 June 2025. You must be able to participate in online meetings every Monday from 12:30-2 PM and, once a month, Tuesday and Friday from 8-9 AM. As part of this job, you will be responsible for counting votes and keeping minutes during meetings according to the GSA Bylaws and Robert's Rules of Order, updating GSA governing documentation and the GSA website as needed, working with GSA historical records, collaborating with other members of the GSA Executive Council, chairing the Strategic Planning Committee, attending important GSA events, and other duties as required. You should be prepared for a commitment of an average of 10 hours per week. You would receive a stipend of $6183.33 in total for your 7 months in the role.

To nominate yourself, please submit your name, student ID number, photograph/headshot, brief biography (50-100 words), and statement as to your qualifications and interest in the role (100-300 words), by 17 Oct 2024. If you are qualified according to the Graduate School, you should participate in the election, which will take place during the GSA Senate meeting on 22 Oct 2024 at 8 AM (online). Depending on the number of applicants, you may be able to give a speech and/or answer questions before the vote that day.
