Recruiting New IRB Members for the 2023-24 Academic Year
The Institutional Review Board (IRB), the formally designated UMBC committee to approve, monitor, and review research involving humans is currently accepting applications from students to join the committee. Graduate and Undergraduate students are considered full members of the board. 

Student members serve for a one (1) year appointment and review research protocols, attend meetings, and vote on issues with the aim to protect the rights and welfare of the research subjects. Appointments begin in October 2023. The board typically meets 5 times during the academic year: October, December, February, April and June. Meetings are on Mondays from 10 am-12 pm.

This is a terrific opportunity to learn about ethical issues related to research. Also, being a member of the IRB looks good on a curriculum vitae or resume. Please contact Dr. Susan Sonnenschein, IRB Chair, (sonnensc@umbc.edu) no later than September 22, 2023 if you wish to apply. Your email should include a
copy of your curriculum vitae or resume and a few sentences describing your research interests and experience. We are particularly interested in people who have had research experience with human participants.

Hello Retrievers! 

Vice President for Student Affairs Renique Kersh

Welcome to the Fall 2023 semester! I am very excited to join the UMBC community as Vice President for Student Affairs, and as I have not met many of you yet I want to take a moment to introduce myself. 

For me, this is a return "home" as UMBC is where I started my career in 2001. From my office window in The Commons, I can see the residential community where I worked as a community director. I loved the feeling of caring and connection I experienced on this campus then, and look forward to hearing about your own experiences and learning how I can be supportive. 

I previously served as the Vice President for Student Engagement, Success, and Diversity at Simmons University in Boston, MA. My husband and I are incredibly excited about living in Maryland and are grateful for the warm Retriever welcome we've received already. It has been a joy to walk around campus and see how UMBC has grown. Like you, our sons are beginning a new academic year. John is in his first year of college at the University of Southern California and Jayden is a sophomore at Western Reserve Academy.

As I transition into this role, it is important for me to hear from you! I want to get to know you, hear how your semester is going, and listen to your hopes for your time at UMBC. Beginning September 13, I will host coffee chats on Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. in my office in The Commons, room 319. Please sign up online to reserve a time. 

I am committed to ensuring that you feel a sense of belonging at UMBC and find the resources and experiences you need to be successful. There are many ways to get engaged, find your people, connect to resources for self-care, make a difference, and just have fun. I hope you will take advantage of these opportunities, and know that it is okay to ask for help if you need it.

I am humbled and honored to join you on this journey and I cannot wait to connect in person. Calling graduate students in the College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) interested in being a SEA CIRTL Fellow for the Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) and the CIRTL programs at UMBC. SEA provides one-week camps for middle and high school students on the UMBC Campus. These camps help kids to stay engaged, have fun learning science and technology skills, and get excited about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) at UMBC.

These SEA CIRTL Fellows will develop and implement a SEA one (1) week course in an engineering topic of their choice with guided mentorship in Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 and implement the course with SEA in Summer 2024. Fellows will be required to attend a variety of sessions that help them solidify their course ideas, learn about teaching approaches that are accessible and engaging for high school and middle school students, and plan their courses. This will all count toward a CIRTL certificate, which is a nationally recognized teaching certificate! Upon teaching the course in Summer 2024, Fellows will be paid a minimum of $1000/week for 1 or 2 weeks, with an opportunity for more depending on enrollment for the course.

Note: Courses are run as half-day camps for a week (5 days), and Fellows will be able to choose two weeks of these five options:  June 24-28, July 8-12, July 15-19, July 22-26, July 29 – August 2.

At Dinner with Friends, you’ll share stories, learn about each other’s experiences, and discuss how we can move forward together on a topic of your choice (see below). Students, faculty, staff, and alumni who participate in Dinners with Friends report that they have wonderful experiences.
