Lunch and Learns for Faculty This spring, the Library is offering two hybrid Lunch and Learns for Faculty. Lunch will be provided for in-person attendees. Please follow the links to register in advance.

Lunch and Learn for Faculty Part 1: Library Video Services and the Library Innovation Lab, March 27, 12-1. This event will cover:

  •  The Library's digital and DVD video collections 
  • The Library Digital Media Lab which provide equipment and  facilities for DYI digital media production.
  • The Library Innovation Lab which provides equipment and software for fabrication including 3D printers and scanners, laser cutters, and more.

Lunch and Learn for Faculty Part 2: Lecture Capture and Media Management, the New Media Studio, and Research Computing, April 3, 12-1. This event will cover:

  •  Lecture capture and media management with Yuje
  • The New Media Studio (full service video production)
  • Research computing

These events are sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the Department of Research and Creative Achievement (RCAC), The Department of Information Technology (DoIt), The Albin O. Kuhn LIbrary & Gallery (A.O.K. Library), and UMBC Grant Adminstrators.

Graduate Students & Postdocs,

Learn about the nationally recognized teaching certificates that can be earned from UMBC's Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL). It's never too early to work towards building your CV, particularly if you are considering a career in teaching/academia.

Earning these certifications is FREE for all UMBC graduate students & postdocs.

If you are interested in learning what this certification entails and how to begin to working towards it, please attend this in-person information session on Friday, February 6, at 9 AM.

In addition receive information about an opportunity to get teaching experience with our SEA CIRTL fellows program.

As a SEA CIRTL Fellow, you'll work with experienced faculty to design and implement a one-week course on a topic of your choice. Those who get selected get professional development to get the teaching certification, plus mentorship to create and teach their course during summer (Summer 2026) for middle schoolers or high schoolers and a stipend of $1,000 after they teach their class and get their certification.

Applications for the program open on August 2026.

STRiVE 2026, the leadership for public purpose program hosted by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life, took place from January 12-16, 2026 at the Bon Secours Retreat & Conference Center in Marriottsville, MD. 43 UMBC undergraduate students spent five days exploring their stories, values, talents, and identities; developing strong relationships with other members of the UMBC community; learning how to enact meaningful and sustainable social change; and leaning into their power to intentionally create empowering, connective environments in which everyone can thrive. STRiVE 2026 was the 20th iteration of STRiVE at UMBC.

STRiVE 2026 was facilitated by a team of 12 UMBC undergraduate student and staff coaches trained by Tess McRae '22, individualized study (assistant director for connective learning, Center for Democracy and Civic Life) and Dr. David Hoffman, Ph.D. '13, language, literacy and culture (director, Center for Democracy and Civic Life).

The student coaches — all of whom participated in STRiVE in 2024 or 2025 — were:

STRiVE participants and coaches sit in small groups and have engaging conversations in a sunlit room.
"STRiVE created a space for me to reflect on what kind of person I am and what kind of person I want to become in terms of leadership. It also created a space for me to acknowledge my strengths and weaknesses, and continue to work on ways to improve myself." — Nneamaka Ibe '26, biological sciences

During STRiVE, other staff members from UMBC visited Bon Secours to support the participants' learning. Several guests served as "stakeholders" by meeting with small groups of students exploring topics of interest and concern at UMBC (Accessibility, Civic and Political Engagement, Equity and Justice, Finding Community, and Well-Being) and connecting with students as thought partners and co-creators:

Ricky Blissett visited STRiVE 2026 at other points during the week to co-facilitate sessions with STRiVE coaches. Dr. Renique Kersh, vice president for student affairs, visited STRiVE to connect with and inspire participants over lunch.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who supported the planning and facilitation of STRiVE 2026, including UMBC Transit, UMBC Residential Life, UMBC's commonvision Student Design & Print Center, UMBC's Vice President for Student Affairs office, UMBC's Student Affairs Business Services Center (SABSC), UMBC's Student Government Association (SGA), and the Bon Secours Retreat & Conference Center.

STRiVE is hosted by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life with support from the Student Government Association and PNC Bank. Since 2009, over 900 UMBC students have participated in the program and have gone on to make meaningful change on campus and beyond.

Are you presenting a poster at the upcoming GEARS Research Symposium or an interdisciplinary conference? Join us for a practical workshop designed to help you communicate your research effectively to a broad audience.

Unlike traditional academic conferences, GEARS brings together researchers and high level university officials from diverse fields.
