“That childhood is endowed with certain inherent and inalienable rights, among which are freedom from toil for daily bread; the right to play and to dream; the right to the normal sleep of the night season; the right to an education, that we may have equality of opportunity for developing all that there is in us of mind and heart.”

-- A. J. McKelway, Southern Secretary of the National Child Labor Committee (1913)

The International Labour Organisation defines child labor as “any work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development”. In the United States, children have been forced to work in mines and industrial factories, where their health and safety were jeopardized. While it may seem unthinkable to us now, the expanding economy of the 19th and 20th centuries demanded cheap labor. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that things began to change.

The National Child Labor Committee (NCLC) was established in 1904 with the intent to promote the well-being of children and young adults in the workforce. The NCLC opposed the employment of underage workers in dangerous jobs with unhealthy conditions, particularly in mines and factories or completing manual labor, which often led to health concerns such as tuberculosis and broken bones. Children became unhealthy or poor adults, because the cycle of work and sleep left little or no time for education or play.

In order to bring their concerns to the public’s attention, the NCLC made extensive use of photography. They hired photographers to document child labor, including the working conditions and the children themselves. Exhibitions of these photographs circulated around the United States, dragging the seedy underworld of child labor into the spotlight.

    One
of the photographers hired by the NCLC was Lewis Hine, a self-styled social
photographer who traveled around the country documenting working children.
He used his craft to expose detrimental social conditions and to spur
change. These photographs, and those of other NCLC photographers, also brought
about new ideas concerning childhood, including the belief that it is something
to be cherished and that play should be encouraged. A collection of NCLC
photographs printed on glass lantern slides, can be viewed at UMBC’s Special
Collections, including many by Lewis Hine.

With the aid of these photographs, the NCLC was able to sway public opinion on child labor. Children under the age of sixteen were prohibited from working dangerous jobs, and children under fourteen we prohibited from working at all. Work permits providing proof of age became mandatory. By the 1930s, child labor finally began to disappear altogether with the invention of machines that could replace small hands in the workplace.

PROMISE at Schools within the USM: Salisbury, UMES, Bowie, Towson. “When Faculty Say X” discussion, Spring 2016.

This week, PROMISE is visiting schools around Maryland for meetings and workshops. The key feature will be the PROMISE annual workshop, “When Faculty Say ‘X’ …”

Description of the lecture:

Understanding professors’ expectations shouldn’t be a mystery. However, sometimes, there are disconnects between what a faculty member wants a student to produce for a project, and how the student interprets the instructions. In many cases, the expectations of faculty are clearly articulated, either in written or oral format. However, in other cases, there are situations where a faculty member’s feedback or outcomes from discussions regarding progress may not be as clear because they involve aspects of non-verbal communication such as eye contact, gestures, facial expressions, tone of voice, and eye contact.

Addressing the Needs of Graduate Students

We draw particular attention to the needs of graduate students for our “When Faculty Say X” success seminar series. Graduate students have several forms of faculty interaction that have their own sets of nuances. For graduate students, the faculty member is a teacher, a mentor, an advisor, and a future colleague. There are several phases through which one must pass to navigate the transitions. During coursework, there is the phase where one follows the syllabus, turns in the homework, and takes the exam. During the qualifying exam and proposal stages, it can be difficult for a student to determine what they are supposed to know on the journey toward building expertise in a discipline or particular area of research. In addition to becoming a contributor to the field, a professor may have a methodology that must be employed by all in her lab, or a set of theories which need to be used set the foundation for all work that comes out of the research group. There may be bibliographies that one must reference, techniques that must be mastered, and simple “unwritten rules” that must be followed. Some of the rules may include attending every group meeting and each departmental colloquium. Other rules may extend to writing, i.e., explicit use of a citation style, paragraph structure, or drafting process.

The PROMISE AGEP launched the “When Faculty Say X …” series to answer some of these burning questions. The facilitator will be Dr. Renetta G. Tull, Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Student Development and Postdoctoral Affairs at UMBC, and Director of the University System of Maryland’s National Science Foundation’s PROMISE: Maryland’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP). Dr. Tull will present a series of scenarios that graduate students have experienced, along with responses from STEM faculty from the USM and other schools around the nation. Time will be set aside for students’ real-time Q&A, which is often the most important part of the program.

This week we present the April Fool's edition of UMBC's Retriever newspaper known as The Deceiver and The Poodle.

The UMBC Retriever newspaper has a longstanding tradition of satirical April Fool's editions. In 1977, the paper published its very first April Fool's issue entitled The Poodle. The issue was filled with sarcastic and humorous articles including one naming the poodle as UMBC's new mascot and one stating that the SGA president and Physical Education Department were sponsoring a duel between two inmates from the Maryland Correctional Institution. Since then, The Retriever newspaper has published annual April Fool's issues during the week of April the 1st under the name The Deceiver. Amusing article titles over the years have included, "Student Bursts into Flame During Lecture," "Administration Building Stolen During Last Weekend," "UMBC Explodes," and "Giant Terrapin Attacks UMBC."

Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present a page from The Retriever describing the Student People's Party in 1971.

In the spring of 1971, among the aspiring SGA election nominees were a group of students who had organized themselves as the People's Party. The party's goal was to completely redesign student life and the appropriation of funds on the UMBC campus with the hopes of expanding community and student development. Proposed programs included a more effective student book service, the establishment of a UMBC Day Care Center, and the creation of an abortion counseling service.

Though the party gathered popular support for their ideas, and even won election, once the Student People's Party was in office they were unable to accomplish what they had promised to do. Soon after, enough students pulled together to sign a petition that called for a re-election. The Student People's Party was swiftly voted out of office.

Phishing: Don’t Be Our Weak Link

<Tagline>Attacks are Becoming More Targeted. What should people do?</Tagline>

Phishing attacks have been a problem for many years. Typically, hackers have sent messages asking members of our community to click on a link or reply to an email message with a password. Their goal has always been to trick our community members into giving them access to our accounts and information. Sometimes, they have pretended to be DoIT and sent messages to ask for your password or to tell you that there is a problem with your UMBC account.

Recently, the hackers have expanded their efforts and sent messages as people around our campus. They have been looking up the names and titles of UMBC community members on the Internet and then using that person’s name and title to request information. They try to choose a name or title that the community would trust. As examples, during recent attempts, they have requested information about how to wire money out of the campus and get people to send checks to outside addresses. They have also requested that people send them files containing the social security numbers of community members. In some cases, they have also impersonated UMBC vendors. In each of these examples, they have tried to make their phishing messages appear to come from a person that the campus would trust.

The hackers are motivated by money and resources and will continue to try to get to our accounts, information, and resources. The only thing that can stop them is the UMBC community working together to block their attempts. Here are some questions that DoIT frequently receives and the answers.

1. What information can’t I send in email?

No one should ever send passwords or confidential information in an email message.

Confidential information includes social security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, and financial account numbers. This information is classified as confidential information under the policies of UMBC, the University System of Maryland, and the State of Maryland. Passwords and confidential information can never be sent through email. This includes the body of an email message and as an attachment to a message. For in depth information about our data classifications and use, please see the following two links:

UMBC Policy on the Definition and Classification of Sensitive Information

UMBC Data Use Guidelines

2. Will DoIT ever ask for my password?

No. In fact, DoIT doesn’t know (and has no reason to know) your password. The only person who should ever know your password is you. If DoIT needs to assist you with your password, we can help you to reset your password, but DoIT still won’t need to know your password. To help us maintain the privacy of your password, please make sure you have your account security questions enabled -- and make sure you know the answers. Please also ensure that you have an alternate email address registered with UMBC. If DoIT needs to send you a link to reset your password, we will send it to the secondary email address that we have associated with your account.

3. What should I do if I receive a suspicious message?

If you think that the message is asking you to do something that seems unusual, look up the phone number of the person the message is from in the UMBC directory, call the person, and ask them if they really sent the message. Do not call a person back at a phone number that is listed in the suspicious email message. The phishing message may include the phone number of the hacker. For example, if you get a message saying that there is a problem with your computer account and you aren’t sure if it’s a real message, please call the DoIT Technology Support Center (410-455-3838) and ask if it’s a real message. This also applies to any messages that might appear to come from Human Resources, Finance, Financial Aid, or any other department. If the message seems strange, trust your instincts, look up the correct phone number for the person, and call to verify the message.

4. What should I do with a message that I have determined is a phishing message?

Forward it to security@umbc.edu with “full headers” and as much information as you can. DoIT will review the messages that you forward, verify that they are phishing messages, and take steps to try and protect the rest of the community.

Once you forward any phishing messages to security@umbc.edu, please delete the messages, and very importantly, never click on the links in a phishing message. Just by clicking on the link in a phishing message, you may download a malicious program onto your computer.

5. Who do I contact if I have additional questions?

As a starting point, the following links may provide assistance.

You can also contact the DoIT Technology Support Center at 410-455-3838 or send any security questions and problems to security@umbc.edu.
