The UMBC Graduate School Dissertation Fellowship

Application Deadline: Friday, April 29, 2016

The Dissertation Fellowship is designed to provide doctoral candidates at UMBC an opportunity to devote the necessary concentration and attention towards finishing the writing of their dissertations. The Fellowship is specifically designed for students with full-time jobs off-campus, for those without any financial support who are making steady progress with their writing, and for whom having additional time and resources would permit them to complete the process more expeditiously. This Fellowship is not available as an option for students with available graduate assistantship support.

The Dissertation Fellowship could provide promising doctoral candidates with financial support so that they may reduce their current obligations and partially offset any reductions in salary or increases in expenses. No additional work assignments other than work on the dissertation are to be associated with this support.

Priority will be given to students who demonstrate that the Fellowship will allow them the needed time to complete their writing and to make revisions in time to defend the work within a realistic but expeditious time frame. Awards will be made to students who have demonstrated a commitment to provide at least 20 hours per week for an entire academic semester to writing the dissertation.

Dissertation Fellowship awards are available for Summer 2016. The duration of an award is for one semester. The maximum level of support for Summer is a total stipend of $2,996.32 per Fellowship plus tuition remission for two credits of 899.

To be considered for a Dissertation Fellowship, the Ph.D. candidate must:

Applications for Summer 2016 Dissertation Fellowships will be accepted by the Office of the Associate Dean of the Graduate School until 4:30 p.m., Friday, April 29, 2016. A committee consisting of three members of the Graduate School Leadership Team will review applications and announce recipients of the Fellowship by May 13, 2016. Selection will be based on the extent of convincing evidence that the award will provide the critical element need to complete the dissertation

Discussion: Flipped classrooms turn the traditional teaching model on its head by introducing students to new concepts outside of class (rather than through lectures) and using class time to deepen that knowledge through exercises and other activities. This kind of format can fuel collaborative learning and strengthen understanding of complex topics. Join us to learn how this design works in practice and join a discussion on how it can be applied to the STEM classroom.

“Dual Language Instruction” Workshops provided by Ana G. Méndez University @SUAGM, #ThinkBigDiversity

The PROMISE AGEP enjoys a partnership with the Ana G. Méndez University System in Puerto Rico, with campuses in Florida (Orlanda and Tampa Bay), and Maryland (Wheaton). The Ana G. Méndez University (AGMUS) offers a unique degree program for adult learners, using a dual language model of Spanish and English. You can read more about the Capital Area Campus on Veirs Mill Road in Wheaton, Maryland here: http://www.suagm.edu/capitalareacampus/. The Maryland Capital Area Campus is a hub or center for three universities in Puerto Rico, offering particular courses and degrees from each campus. In this way, professionals who want to have careers that utilize two languages, can receive their undergraduate and/or graduate degrees using the Dual-Language degree model here in Maryland without having to go to Puerto Rico.

The Chancellor of AGMUS, Dr. Carlos Padin and other faculty from the Puerto Rico campus, along with the Capital Area Campus Director (president) Silvia Navarro and the Academic Director, Ivette Cruz, have participated in SSI, and have been great supporters of PROMISE. The Capital Area Campus came to UMBC last semester to provide a system-wide seminar that discussed the opportunities at the AGMUS campus in Maryland. AGMUS is offering additional courses for teaching, and they offer these to you. You may take the asynchronous courses online, or come to the Capital Area Campus in Wheaton, Maryland to attend in person. Course dates, times, and the opportunity to create an account for complementary registration can be found here, http://agmus.gosignmeup.com/Public/Course/Browse.

Ivette Cruz, Academic Director of the Capital Area Campus Invites You!

The list below was provided by Ivette Cruz, Academic Director – CAC, who thought that these courses would be of interest to you. She is looking forward to having graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from our institutions participate! AGMUS offers these opportunities to PROMISE in hopes of providing professional development and interest in becoming a bilingual professional, and toward inviting you to apply for their faculty job openings, as available.

Courses Developed for AGMUS Faculty are Offered to Participants of PROMISE

The courses below are provided for the AGMUS faculty. They are being offered to you as part of the “and the professoriate” part of the PROMISE: Maryland’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP). The PROMISE AGEP also has as a sub-program, PROF-it: Professors-in-Training, and we participate in the CIRTL network for research and teaching. We encourage our graduate students and postdocs to take advantage of this generous offer from AGMUS.

UMBC's first chancellor, Albin O. Kuhn, worked hard to be an active figure in the UMBC community. One way he did this was by participating in a UMBC duckpin bowling league in 1968. The league consisted of various members of the UMBC community including faculty, staff, and their spouses. Chancellor Kuhn and his wife, Libby, can be seen on the above 1968 bowling schedule, under Team 5 and Team 3 respectively.
