This past weekend, I was honored and humbled to speak of around 180 aspiring #STEM professor’s at Maryland’s National Science Foundation funded PROMISE AGEP #ThinkBigDiversity Summer Success Institute workshop, led by Dr. Renetta Tull. It was so encouraging and heartening to see so many African American, Latino/Latina, and Native American STEM graduate students, postdocs and faculty. As a former Spelman College faculty member and department chair, I was especially delighted to learn about #teamgetitdone, a.k.a. the Sisters in Dissertation House. Speaking to this group was a little nostalgic because in the late 90’s, I had attended an NSF Engineering Education Scholars Program that was led by Denice Denton at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before she left to become an engineering Dean at the University of Washington. This program helped me gain insight into the process of getting a Ph.D., starting a research program, and being a productive faculty member.

Staff Changes in DoIT New Media Studio

<Tagline>Ferrera Leaving as Acting Manager, Roddy Stepping Up</Tagline>

Late last month, Christine Ferrera announced she would be stepping down on August 28 as a video producer and Acting Manager of DoIT’s New Media Studio (NMS). In addition to working in the Studio for the past seven years, first as an MFA grad assistant, and then full time upon her graduation in 2010, Christine is a talented performance artist, author and stand-up comic, which she wants to pursue full time. During this transition we’ll continue to consult with Christine on a part-time basis, but also wish her the best in all her pursuits.

Reflecting on her time at UMBC, Christine highlights her work with Digital Storytelling on-campus. “Specifically, I've enjoyed working with Bill [Shewridge] on projects such as, the Sparrow's Point Steel Workers documentary (Mill Stories) and working with retirees through the Erickson School of Aging Studies,” says Christine, who also enjoyed teaching Digital Stories in collaboration with MCS, Public History and the Linehan Artist Scholars program. “The best part about my experience over the past 5 years has been working with such a vast array of departments and people on campus, from HR to Athletics.”

In the interim, Dustin Roddy, another video producer in the Studio, will be handling coordination of Studio projects on a temporary basis. Like Christine, Dustin has worked on several UMBC Digital Storytelling projects, first as a student for one year, and since his 2014 graduation from UMBC, with majors in Media & Communications Studies and American Studies. In addition to his work at UMBC, Dustin has freelanced as a camera operator for a number of extreme sports events broadcast online and for national sports networks, and worked as a supervisor for Vans outdoor apparel. For more information, contact Dustin at drod2@umbc.edu or 5-3214.

John Q. Lane sketchbook in Special Collections

Our main goal in Special Collections is to make all of our collections accessible and discoverable to the public. We are continually writing descriptions or metadata records about the collections and items available. This year we are working to describe collections that do not have any records, and there are a few items that we know very little about. In cases like these, it can be difficult to create a record to represent the material; it becomes necessary to try and learn what we can about such items despite a lack of background information or context. Fortunately, we are often able to glean some understanding from the materials themselves, uncover further information from outside research, and piece together a basic record for public viewing.

One such collection recently discovered on our shelves is the sketchbook from “John Q. Lane,” dating from 1875. While Lane provides no biographical or personally identifying information within the pages of this book, we are able to imagine a good deal about him from a cursory glance at his artwork.

Lane’s use of vivid color and extreme attention to detail make for truly magnificent renderings of decorative plates, vases, ewers, and other household objects. Lane also includes background information on many of the pieces he has painted, including country of origin, time period, size, and material. It is clear that he appreciated the beauty of these items and the artists who originally crafted them.

At the back of the book are a few outdoor scenes sketched only in pencil, and lacking the detail and color of the previous pages. One scene displays a stone bridge over water, while the others depict bunnies, butterflies, and birds surrounded by leafy foliage and decorative frames. These two groups of illustrations are starkly different and make one wonder about the artist and his life, as well as the purpose of his sketchbook.

Who, exactly, was John Q. Lane? Did he work in a museum among beautiful objects, yet long to be outside amid nature? Was he recreating real scenes from his everyday life, or from books he read and pictures he saw? While we can’t quite answer these questions at the moment, we can create a record for Lane’s sketchbook in our database. By making it more discoverable and accessible to the public, others can appreciate the fine work of John Q. Lane and possibly shed more light on his life and work.

The John Q. Lane sketchbook is available to view in Special Collections, just ask for Collection 152. The collection descriptions are available to view in the Special Collections Search database; you can learn more about Special Collections, including when the reading room is open, how to contact the librarians, and to view a video about the research collections, all on our website. Special Collections will reopen for the fall semester on August 26.

This

New UMBC App Now Available to Download for Android Devices

<Tagline>App features easier sign on, personalized content, and more</Tagline>

The Android version of the UMBC app is now available on the Google Play Store. The app requires Android version 4.1 and up. There is no login required, as you can access all the features as a guest. If you do have an account, log in once to the UMBC app and from that point forward use a 4-digit pin to quickly log in later.

The design is slightly different in the Android version, Home, Search, Places, and Events are moved to the top but users should expect the same features found in the iOS version launched last month. If logged in, the UMBC app will feature content and resources tailored to you.

In the Home tab, users can browse both the myUMBC and UMBC mobile friendly site and quickly check for updates. Search has a built in QR code scanner and shows what you have used recently, what others are looking for and myUMBC favorites.

DoIT will be doing some data center network updates this Saturday morning (August 8th) starting at 6:00am. We don't expect there to be any major interruption in services but there may be some brief disruption of various campus websites and on-campus mail services as we migrate services from one device to another to allow for the upgrades. These outages should only last a few seconds to a minute, but there will be several of them throughout the upgrade process.
