InCommon developed the assurance program as part of its mission to provide secure and privacy-preserving trust services for its participants. Enabling higher-value, higher-risk services requires increased trust by the organizations that run the identity and cloud services.

“UMBC believes Identity management is absolutely essential to campus cyber security, and Bronze represents consensus best practice in identity management,” said Jack Suess, Vice President of Information Technology and CIO at UMBC. “It is in our interest to utilize these best practices in designing and implementing our identity management processes.”

InCommon currently has two US-Government approved assurance profiles — Bronze and Silver. Bronze is comparable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Assurance 1 level, which has credential security adequate for basic Internet interactions. Silver, comparable to NIST’s level of Assurance 2, requires proof of identity and has security appropriate for higher-risk transactions.

At InCommon’s monthly IAM webinar series, Todd Haddaway, UMBC’s Director of Database and Identity Management, presented on the topic of UMBC’s experience with obtaining Bronze certification.
VPN malfunctioning after Mac OS X Yosemite upgrade

If you routinely use the UMBC VPN (https://vpn.umbc.edu) and are a Apple Mac user we would strongly recommend waiting and not upgrading to the new OSX Yosemite that came out this past Thursday 10/16. This upgrade will break the functionality of the Juniper Network Connect VPN client. DoIT will be working to test several solutions over the next few days and we hope to release an updated VPN client that will work with the new OS within a week.

Once we have finished our testing and developed documentation for the new client we will post another news article and the Technology Support Center and Desktop Support will be prepared to assist users with any questions regarding the new client.

If you have upgraded to Yosemite and require the VPN, go to http://rt.umbc.edu to open a support ticket and we will work with you to get you working on the new client before its officially released.

Thanks in advance for your patience as we work to resolve this issue.

University of Maryland College Park faculty members are conducting a
multi-campus survey study of how graduate students are supported by their
programs in pursuit of their career goals. To participate, please go to the following
website. We recommend using a stable internet connection and using the same
device to begin and finish participation.

Insight into the various eras in which the works were produced is evident by the selections. For example, Allen Ginsberg’s book Howl is an icon of the Beat Generation, and continues to be a touchstone of the counterculture today. The book is paired with a portrait photograph of Ginsberg by photographer Elsa Dorfman, noted for her portraits of Beat Generation authors. An 1884 edition of a book devoted to The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe demonstrates how revered Poe was even in 1884 when the book was published. Famous French illustrator Gustave Doré did the images on pages opposite the pages of the poem. Other items in the exhibition are broadsides by Dick Higgins, photographs by Lotte Jacobi, books by Paul Lawrence Dunbar, poems by Gertrude Stein, and many others.
