Everyone Must Reset Password and Create Security Questions

    <Tagline>Deadline: May 23, 2014</Tagline>

Update:

Given recent IT security threats generally, DoIT has decided to force the password change to May 23, 2014, the day after Undergraduate Commencement. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

--------------------------------------------

In an effort to improve campus security and better protect user information, DoIT is requiring that everyone with a UMBC account must change his or her password by June 9, 2014, unless this has already been done this calendar year. This will apply to all myUMBC account holders -- students, faculty, staff and alumni. We know people hate changing their account passwords, but with the rise of emails targeting people to share their account and password, called phishing, we feel it is necessary for security.

As part of this effort, everyone will also be required to provide an alternate email address and create account security questions. Once in place, all users will then be able to reset their password through a self-service page. We have had these account security questions in place for the last two years for students and the program has been very successful in reducing the number of time-consuming, manual password resets performed by our Technolgy Support Center (TSC). We expect that by expanding self-service password resets to all account holders, everyone will benefit.

A notice will appear to all faculty and staff when they login on Wednesday, April 23, informing them they need to change their password and establish their security questions, if they have not done so already in 2014. While the final date for password changes is June 9th, DoIT especially recommends that faculty make this change before they leave for the summer. We will also be sending out regular reminders.

To create your own security questions, visit the following Frequently Asked Question (FAQ):

How do I create my security questions to reset a forgotten password?

If you have any questions or need help, please submit an RT Ticket or contact the TSC at 410.455.3838.

Library Staff Highlight: Sarah New

[Tune in every 2 weeks for Library Staff Highlights!]

    Name: Sarah New

    Hometown: Bel Air, MD, USA

    Alma Mater: University of Virginia

1. Where do you work in the library and how long have you worked there?
I’m part of the Reference department on the first floor, and I can usually be found in my office working on our website and digital services. I just got hired at the end of 2013, so I’ve been here for less than a year!

2. What would you like the campus community to know about your job?
The Library website is incredibly important for students and faculty doing research, and I’m thinking about that every day. We’re in the process of a site redesign, so all my focus right now is going into making the next iteration of our website usable and beautiful for you guys.

3. What’s your favorite aspect of working at UMBC?
I love working in a place where people are learning every day. It keeps me in that mindset, so I’m always thinking big and trying new things.

4. Do you have a favorite project, event, or memory from your time working in the library?
Hmm, I’m not sure I’ve worked here long enough to answer this one!! Oh, but actually - I really enjoyed the Library Book Sale earlier this month. I found an old book that my mom had told me she read as a teenager – it’s been out of print for years, but there it was on the shelf! It made her day when I showed up with it that weekend!

5. If you were a UMBC student, what library services would you use/appreciate the most?
Consultations with the reference librarians, definitely – I had no idea that was even an option when I was in school! You can email or sit down with any of the Subject Librarians to get help with your research; they are experts in where and how to search for information on your topic.

6. If you had to survive on a desert island with only one book, movie, or TV show, what would it be and why?
Oh geez, that’s tough. I think I’d have to go for something escapist, so I wouldn’t have to think about gutting fish and weaving clothes and whatnot. So I’m gonna say the Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede. It’s about a princess who goes off to have adventures with dragons and wizards, and no matter what happens she’s always brave and practical and funny – which are probably qualities I should learn to emulate if I’m gonna survive on that island!

7. A wizard has turned you into your favorite animal. What are you?
Baby hedgehog!

Veterans Invested in us. Let's Invest in them!

<Tagline>Support the Veteran Peer Mentor Program in ProveIT!</Tagline>

This year, SGA's Prove It! grant competition features many student
groups looking to create real change on campus. On the week of March 24-28, UMBC students will
vote for the grant proposals they like the most. The two winning ideas will receive $10,000 to
    implement their programs on campus.

One of the campaigns that
students can vote for is Veteran Peer Mentor Program.

The student veteran population is one of the fastest growing
    populations at UMBC.

A solid support system at UMBC has not yet been developed to
    meet all their needs.

We need to implement a Veteran Peer Mentor Program to help
meet those needs and provide the camaraderie many vets miss after leaving the
    military.

Transitioning veterans to be successful students adds a
valuable resource and benefit to the whole UMBC community.

Having veterans adds depth and diversity to the student
body. Veterans are an incredibly team oriented, resilient, and motivated group
    of individuals. They bring unique
perspectives to the classroom from their experiences. They understand the importance of cooperation,
having been used to working in close-knit teams in the military; their peers
were sometimes the difference between life and death.

Their military training prepared them to handle life
and death situations but not how to transition to being a college student. When a veteran doesn't feel connected to their
university they may be more inclined to leave school. Student veterans do not respond to traditional
methods of outreach. A Veteran Peer
Mentor Program will enable veterans to achieve a higher level of academic
success and smoothly transition to student life which not only benefits
veterans but the entire UMBC community

Veterans have invested in our nation. Now it’s our turn to invest in them. Vote for the Veteran Peer Mentor Program on
the Prove It! poll at http://my.umbc.edu/discussions/11313

What is RecycleMania?

It is an annual 8-week competition between universities to see who can recycle the most! Sounds fun right? So go around and grab all your
recyclables (and your friends) and help our school win!

RecycleMania is not just a competition; it’s also a great
way to educate people about recycling. There are plenty of events to attend
like the RecycleMania Parade and “Regames” which feature giveaways and musical
          performances!

Just give it a try and recycle when you can!
