July 24th Network Disruption A short network disruption occurred at 8:45 p.m. on July 24

Around 8:45 p.m. last night, July 24th, the UMBC campus experienced a network outage. During that time network connectivity for resources both on and off campus would have been down. Service was restored within minutes but users may have experienced short disruptions until 11 p.m. while the network team worked to stabilize the campus firewalls.


This outage was the result of firewall software updates that did not go as planned. As of 7 a.m. this morning, July 25th, the firewalls and network environment is operating normally.

As phishing messages targeting the UMBC community continue to be observed, you may find yourself as the recipient of a suspicious email and asking the question, “Is this a scam?”.  Avoiding interaction and reporting an email when suspicious are highly recommended, but being able to identify a phishing scam outright through the presence of simple red flags is a useful skill that can allow you to better protect yourself and others. As these basic symptoms add up, the more likely an email is dubious. Caution is always advised.


1. Strange or Unexpected Sender
Check the sender’s email address closely. A message that looks like it's from an official source might actually be from a suspicious domain. If the name looks familiar but the address seems off, be cautious. Consider the context, and if receiving an email like this would even make sense in the first place. 


2. Urgency or Scare Tactics

Phrases like "Immediate Action Required", "Your account will be suspended", or "Confirm now to avoid penalty" are red flags. Scammers want to panic you into clicking without thinking, ignoring potentially suspicious elements of an email. 


3. Unusual Links or Attachments

Hover (don’t click!) over any link to see where it actually leads, be wary of irregular addresses. Attachments from unknown senders, especially `.zip`, `.exe`, or `.html` files, can be dangerous.


4. Poor Grammar or Awkward Language

Legitimate communications are usually well-written. Typos, strange phrasing, or bizarre greetings like "Dear User" can signal a scam.


5. Requests for Sensitive Info

No real university department will ever ask you to email or submit your passwords and personal information into online forms. Never give out any personal information, of any kind, in response to a sudden email.


An urgent, seemingly official email can be scary and confusing. But if you pause and take a closer look, some of these red flags can be easily spotted, and you can avoid getting hooked.

Committee members receive an annual stipend of $1,000 – $1,500 in recognition of their valuable contributions.

Mission: GEARS (Graduate Experience, Achievements, Research and Successes) showcase graduate student creativity, research, and resilience through engaging events.

Time Commitment: 3–4 hours/week

Ideal for creative, collaborative, and organized individuals who love event planning and community building.

2) Grants Review Panel (GRP) Committee

Mission: Review and evaluate GSA grant applications for research and travel support.

We are recruiting 6 members with strong attention to detail and accountability. You need to have at least one semester completed to be a part of this committee.
Responsibilities:

Skills Needed: Proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, formulas, formatting)
Time Commitment: 3–4 hours/week
Ideal for analytical and detail-oriented individuals with strong communication skills.

3) Graduate Assistant Advisory Committee (GAAC)

Mission: Represent the voice of Graduate Assistants (GAs) by collecting concerns, advocating for fair compensation and benefits, and shaping policy through the USM Meet & Confer process.

We are recruiting 4 Graduate Assistants:

  • One each from COEIT, CNMS, CAHSS

  • One PhD student in Public Policy as a Legislative Concerns Specialist

Responsibilities:

  • Attend one GA Town Hall or tabling event per semester

  • Submit monthly report updates and assist with GA Handbook or surveys

  • Help draft issue briefs for biannual Meet & Confer meetings

Time Commitment: ~3 hours/week (slightly higher near meetings)
Ideal for GAs passionate about advocacy, policy, and workplace fairness.

4) Equity of Funds Committee (EoF)

Mission: Ensure GSA funds are distributed fairly, transparently, and equitably while monitoring member accountability.

We are recruiting 3 members.
Responsibilities:

  • Attend all committee meetings

  • Review GSA-funded events and programs

  • Track GSA member performance and accountability

  • Maintain records and submit reports

  • Complete tasks as assigned in a timely manner

Time Commitment: 3–4 hours/week
Ideal for students committed to transparency, fairness, and accountability in student government.

Are you passionate about advocacy, event planning, research, or policy? The Graduate Student Association (GSA) is now recruiting paid committee members for the 2025–2026 academic year! This is your opportunity to grow as a leader, collaborate with fellow students, and support the graduate community at UMBC.

Committee members receive an annual stipend of $1,000 – $1,500 in recognition of their valuable contributions.

You can apply to join the committee through a single application form. You can select up to two committees: APPLY HERE

1) Graduate Experience, Achievements, Research and Successes (GEARS) Committee

Mission: GEARS (Graduate Experience, Achievements, Research and Successes) showcase graduate student creativity, research, and resilience through engaging events.

We are recruiting 5 members for these roles:

Time Commitment: 3–4 hours/week

Ideal for creative, collaborative, and organized individuals who love event planning and community building.

2) Grants Review Panel (GRP) Committee

Mission: Review and evaluate GSA grant applications for research and travel support.

We are recruiting 6 members with strong attention to detail and accountability. You need to have at least one semester completed to be a part of this committee.
Responsibilities:

Skills Needed: Proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, formulas, formatting)
Time Commitment: 3–4 hours/week
Ideal for analytical and detail-oriented individuals with strong communication skills.

3) Graduate Assistant Advisory Committee (GAAC)

Mission: Represent the voice of Graduate Assistants (GAs) by collecting concerns, advocating for fair compensation and benefits, and shaping policy through the USM Meet & Confer process.

We are recruiting 4 Graduate Assistants:

  • One each from COEIT, CNMS, CAHSS

  • One PhD student in Public Policy as a Legislative Concerns Specialist

Responsibilities:

  • Attend one GA Town Hall or tabling event per semester

  • Submit monthly report updates and assist with GA Handbook or surveys

  • Help draft issue briefs for biannual Meet & Confer meetings

Time Commitment: ~3 hours/week (slightly higher near meetings)
Ideal for GAs passionate about advocacy, policy, and workplace fairness.
