Introduction

Hello, my name is William. I work in DoIT's Department of Cybersecurity Assurance and Digital Trust. As a computer science major in my final semester and a minor in philosophy, my academic journey has been diverse and enriching. In this video, I will share my experiences working at DoIT, my career aspirations, and advice for fellow students navigating their way through the academic and professional sectors.

Discovering Cyber Security

My Journey in Computer Science

Beginning my final semester as a senior, my focus is on completing the cybersecurity track. The journey through my computer science major has been a transformative experience, equipping me with theoretical knowledge and practical skills. As cybersecurity continues to evolve, my curriculum has merged foundational concepts with the latest trends and technologies, preparing me for the challenges in the digital trust landscape.

Joining DoIT

In August last year, I started working in DoIT's Department of Cybersecurity Assurance and Digital Trust. This opportunity has been instrumental in my growth, allowing me to experiment and learn in a supportive environment. The managers and colleagues at DoIT have been encouraging, sharing their wisdom, and providing guidance throughout my internship. This supportive network has enhanced my confidence in my chosen career path.

Gaining Confidence through Analyst Work

Analyzing cybersecurity risks and ensuring digital trust for DoIT's clients have given me a clearer perspective on my career goals. The practical experience gained through these tasks has not only solidified my understanding of cybersecurity principles but also built my confidence in pursuing this field in the future. The work is challenging yet rewarding, reinforcing my passion for contributing to this industry.

The Importance of Community

Giving Back

One of my core values is giving back to the communities that have supported me. Whether it's through my coursework, professional engagements, or personal endeavors, I find immense satisfaction in contributing positively. The projects I work on at DoIT resonate deeply with this value, offering opportunities to make meaningful impacts while ensuring digital interactions' security and trustworthiness.

Lunch and Learns

Among my favorite memories at DoIT are the Lunch & Learn sessions held monthly. These relaxed gatherings are perfect opportunities to connect with co-workers, both students and full-time staff. It is during these sessions that friendships are forged, ideas are exchanged, and a sense of camaraderie is cultivated. Lunch & Learns underscore the importance of taking time to build relationships in a professional setting.

The CyberDawgs Community

Another significant community in my life is the CyberDawgs, a group of passionate students dedicated to cybersecurity. Being president of CyberDawgs for the last two years has been one of the most engaging experiences of my life. This role has not only honed my leadership skills but also allowed me to witness the growth of my peers as they develop their skills and relationships. CyberDawgs has been a cornerstone in my personal and professional development, offering a collaborative space to explore and grow alongside like-minded individuals.

Advice for Students

1) Asking Questions

If I had to give advice to someone just starting out at DoIT or navigating their academic journey, it would be to always ask questions. In an environment that fosters growth and learning, curiosity is a driving force. Embrace the challenges, seek clarification, and learn from those around you. Every question asked is an opportunity to deepen your understanding and enhance your skills.

2) Embracing the Community Aspect

The community aspect of UMBC has been one of the most enjoyable parts of my academic experience. The sense of belonging, the mutual support, and the collaborative spirit are invaluable as you progress through your studies. Engaging with peers, participating in clubs, and immersing yourself in campus activities enrich your university life in ways beyond the classroom.

3) Finding Your Passion

To incoming students, my advice is to find what you're passionate about and actively seek out opportunities related to that interest. Join clubs, participate in events, and connect with people who share your enthusiasm. There is a place for everyone at UMBC, and finding your niche not only enhances your academic experience but also opens doors for personal and professional growth.

Conclusion

My journey through computer science and cybersecurity, fueled by a supportive community and enriching professional engagements, has been incredibly rewarding. Working at DoIT has solidified my career aspirations, while the CyberDawgs community has fostered my passion for cybersecurity. As I move forward in my career and life, the lessons learned, the relationships built, and the experiences gained will continue to guide and inspire me. For those embarking on similar paths, remember to stay curious, embrace community, and pursue your passions wholeheartedly. There is immense potential within each of you, waiting to be unlocked through dedication and engagement.

Shout-Out!

William will be graduating in May 2025 from UMBC, with a BS in Computer Science and a minor in Philosophy. Congratulations William!
