    <div>What is SACNAS NDiSTEM? </div>

    <div>The Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics &amp; Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) National Diversity in STEM Conference (NDiSTEM) is the largest multidisciplinary and multicultural STEM diversity conference in the country. The NDiSTEM Conference is a gathering which serves to equip, empower, and energize participants for their academic and professional paths in STEM. Over the course of the event, college-level through professional attendees are immersed in cutting-edge STEM research, professional development sessions, motivational keynote speakers, and the Academic &amp; Career Expo, as well as multicultural celebrations and traditions, and an inclusive and welcoming community of peers, mentors, and role models. Simply put, the NDiSTEM Conference is a broadly inclusive space where you are encouraged and empowered to bring your whole self to STEM.</div>

    <Title>Quarterly Patching Downtimes - 2/28 &amp; 3/8</Title>

          <p><span>As part of our ongoing commitment 
          to security, the Unix Infrastructure group will be conducting its 
          quarterly system patching on Friday, February 28th</span><span> and
           Saturday, March 8th.  While many of the systems will be patched 
          without any service disruption, there are some systems which require the
           downtime of key services.  The schedule below outlines which key 
          services will be offline and for how long.</span></p>
          <p><span>Friday, 02/28/2025 between 5pm and 10pm (most systems will only be down for a short period during this time):<br></span></p>
          <ul>
          <li><span>Access to Cyrus (legacy) email (accounts not migrated to UMBC Gmail)</span></li>
          <ul><li><span>All mail will be queued up and delivered after the server is patched</span></li></ul>
          <li>All HFS (afs) servers - gl.umbc.edu home directories will be offline</li>
          <li><span><strong>Between 9:00pm and 10pm only: </strong>Certain software licenses will be unavailable (autodesk, cadence, idl, schrodinger, xilinx, mathematica). </span></li>
          <li><span><strong>Between 9:00pm and 10pm only: </strong>The
           web hosting environments (virthost) will be partially unavailable 
          (pages will be available but any database calls will not work)</span></li>
          <li><span><span><strong>Between 5:00pm and 6:30pm only: </strong></span>LDAP-Master and Webadmin will
           be taken down for system maintenance.  During this time account 
          creations and password changes will be unavailable.  Account 
          authentication and logins will not be affected.</span></li>
          </ul>
          <div>Saturday, 03/08/2025 between 7am and 9am <span>(most systems will only be down for a short period during this time):</span>
          </div>
          <ul><li><span>myUMBC lite page will be up resulting in reduced myUMBC functionality</span></li></ul>

  <Title>Welcome new DoIT Team Members, Leonard &#8216;Lenny&#8217; Frieson III and Mary Arsenault</Title>

    <p><span>We are thrilled to welcome two members to the New Media Studio in the Division of Information Technology: </span><strong><span>Leonard ‘Lenny’ Frieson III and Mary Arsenault</span><span>.</span></strong></p>
    <h4><span><strong>Lenny Frieson</strong></span></h4>
    <p><span><span><img src="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXfnYMwSqG1CZpDEVyaK0ocmQ8cqoosS0MZ30w0hMj2MMtOPpiJW6FJI4fRt1J7wipt2IsgpmrTUSM0-Fut8OCBaHppxANCU8uQ19qtA6dihnCmZ2hx5t05WW1Pu3g4raqENALXqrA?key=ERikPeKH6OKg-KteHd01b8N2" width="268" height="402" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></span></span></p>
    <p><span>Lenny joined us on February 24th as a Video Production Specialist reporting to Dustin Roddy. Lenny will be responsible for producing, filming, and editing campus video projects in addition to various roles in campus live streams and sports broadcast events. </span></p>
    <p><span>Lenny graduated from Towson University in the Spring of 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Electronic Media &amp; Film, with a concentration in Digital Production. He has worked at his father's Church as a multimedia leader, manning the A/V systems since he was 15. During his student years and after graduation, Lenny’s professional career included work as a Videographer, Photographer, and Editor with several studios in the DMV area, including Ross Video Production, Legacy Studios, Shinee Studios, and Hoop Brothers.</span></p>
    <p><span>Lenny also has done work in sports broadcasting for CBS, ABC, and ESPN as a photographer, parabolic mic, and camera operator. In addition, Lenny has worked as a freelancer with Johns Hopkins, Morgan State, Towson University, CAA and CIAA basketball tournaments, and the Premiere Lacrosse League.</span></p>
    <p><span><strong>Fun Fact: </strong></span><span>Lenny is a huge fan of the Ravens, Manchester United, Orioles, Bulls, Wizards, and Bryson Dechambeau, in that order. He is also a huge Marvel fan, despite his favorite superhero being Batman.</span></p>
    <p><span>We’re excited to see Lenny apply his experience and education to grow our New Media Studio and continue serving the campus and its students' educational mission. </span></p>
    <h4><span>Mary Arsenault</span></h4>

    <p><span>Mary joined us on January 21st as a Video Production Specialist. Mary will be responsible for producing, filming, and editing campus video projects in addition to various roles in campus live streams and sports broadcast events. </span></p>
    <p><span>Mary is a graduate of UMBC completing her undergraduate degree in Media and Communications Studies and Psychology in 2018. Mary was an intern at the Studio her senior year, excelling at sports broadcasting, especially replay operations. Mary as an undergrad worked as a Bookstore cashier, staff at Campus Information Center desk, Commons operations, Orientation peer advisor, and Woolie. She was a member of Delta Phi Epsilon (President ‘17-‘18), SUCCESS peer mentor and Psi Chi honors society.</span></p>
    <p><span>After graduating, Mary attended the Disney College Program before landing a job as an account manager at Jellyfish, a marketing and creative agency in downtown Baltimore. Her clients included Google. Most recently, Mary came to us from Shine Creative in Washington, DC, where she was an Assistant Video Editor responsible for over 1,000 political spots and commercials. </span></p>
    <p><span><strong>Fun Fact: </strong></span><span>Mary is a die-hard Baltimore sports fan who attends many Orioles and Ravens games a year. She is also a sneaker customizer who has made over 300 pairs of branded sneakers for clients such as Guy Fieri, Cinnabon, Smalls Sliders, Chicken Guy, and Cosmic Comix. </span></p>

    <br><div>Peabody and Emmy-award winning journalist <strong>Antonia Hylton</strong> will read from and discuss her recent book, <em>Madness: Race and Insanity in a Jim Crow Asylum</em>. <em>Madness</em> chronicles the 93-year history of Crownsville State Hospital, one of the last segregated asylums with surviving records and a campus that still stands to this day in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Hylton traces the legacy of slavery to the treatment of Black people’s bodies and minds in our current mental healthcare system.</div>

          <div>Join our John Smartt Summer Scholars Program.</div>

          <div>We are pleased to open applications for our virtual internship program, John Smartt Summer Scholars. The program provides interested graduate students (masters and doctoral) with the opportunity to gain professional experience, network with scholars in the field of higher education, and learn essential research and programming skills related to equity and leadership in higher education.</div>
          <div><br></div>
          <div><br></div>
          <div><br></div>
          <div>The JSSS program is named in honor of CMSI longtime supporter John Smartt, and seeks to recruit ambitious individuals who demonstrate an interest in learning more about Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). The internship, centered on the scholarship and programs of CMSI, includes financial compensation and will offer selected interns practical research skills and programmatic skills that will help them as they move forward in their careers.</div>

          <div><br></div>
          <div>Interns will receive generous benefits including a $2,000 stipend, faculty mentoring, opportunities to gain research and professional experience, and an invitation to attend ELEVATE, a multi-day professional development workshop for early career, tenure-track faculty at MSIs.</div>

          <div>This year's John Smartt Summer Scholars Program will be held virtually from Monday, June 2 -Friday, July 11, 2025.</div>
          <div><br></div>
          <div>If you are interested in participating, please complete the online application by March 11, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Selected interns will be announced by email in April 2025.</div>

          <div>ELIGIBILITY DETAILS</div>

          <div>Must be a master’s student in any discipline</div>

          <div>Must be interested in conducting research or practice related to Minority Serving Institutions</div>
