This Dissertation House is hosted by the Graduate School at UMBC for UMBC students only.

Graduate students who plan to participate should follow the application procedures on the application webpage for the Dissertation House. The application period closes on Tuesday, June 1, 2021. (Please note that there are only 18 slots for this event, consider applying early). Applications received after June 1, 2021, will be considered for the Dissertation House waiting list.

Event Details:
- The Dissertation House runs from 9 AM – 5 PM, for four days, Tuesday, July 6, 2021, through Friday, July 9, 2021.
- Students must plan to attend the full sessions, for each of the 4 days.
- The daily schedule includes 2 mini-lectures and 5 hours of writing per day.
- The Dissertation House is free for UMBC’s graduate students.
- There are 18 spaces available for the Dissertation House.

Why should You apply to the Dissertation House?
Students who participate in this program will spend each day thinking, writing, and sharing ideas about their doctoral dissertations. Students will learn effective time-management skills; learn how to set small manageable goals, and will meet with a dissertation coach in one-on-one consultations to discuss and address obstacles that might prevent them from completing their degrees.
The Dissertation House activities focus on areas where students typically have difficulty: conceptualizing a topic, writing a literature review, transitioning from a proposal to a dissertation, analyzing data, writing the last chapter, and editing.
How to Apply
- Create a single word document with the following settings:
- font size 11-12 pt
- 1 inch margins
- Divide it into 2 sections - Part 1 and Part 2
- In Part 1, type your header information on one page:
- Name
- Address
- Telephone numbers (mobile, home, office)
- E-mail address
- Academic Program
- Year in program (1st year, 5th Year, etc)
- Type up a brief description (maximum 2 pages) that describes the project that you wish to accomplish during the Dissertation House period.
- In Part 2, type up the following:
- Summary of the project, including research question(s), data, texts, and methods
- Amount completed on the project to date
- Any obstacles you have encountered that hinders completion of the dissertation
- Email application to promisestaff@gmail.com using the subject line format: "Dissertation House Summer 2021 Application: FirstName LastName"
Applications will not be reviewed or accepted outside of the application enrollment period.
Dates: Tuesday, July 6 - Friday, July 9, 2021
Location: ONLINE
Selection Process: Eighteen (18) participants will be selected for participation in the Dissertation House.
The following applicants will have priority:
- Applicants who plan to finish the Ph.D. within the next 6 months
- Individuals who are working on dissertations and theses rather than a proposal
- Applicants who submit earliest, and
- Individuals who appear most able to benefit from the services offered at the Dissertation House.
If your application is accepted, you will receive an acceptance notice via email and additional details about the Dissertation House.

Seeking Graduate Senators for 2021-2022
Apply to become a graduate senator today!
The GSA is seeking applications for senators who will serve throughout the next academic year. Such senators would have the following general responsibilities as they represent either their college or the general interests of all graduate students at UMBC:
1) Attend monthly meetings of the Graduate Senate between August 2021 and May 2022.
2) Work with other senators to host town halls between August 2021 and May 2022 aimed at gathering input and feedback from graduate students
3) Serve on at least one university committee
4) Other tasks as assigned by the Graduate Senate or Executive Council (such as following up on an issue or comment)
Senators who fulfill these responsibilities will be eligible to receive a stipend of $200 per semester.
Note that as the campus remains closed, the GSA Senate will plan to conduct business virtually (this will include meetings, town halls, events, etc). As any changes are announced, the GSA Executive Council will be sure to keep the GSA Senate informed. Stay tuned for any updates as we transition through the summer into the fall semester and thank you for your continued cooperation!

Thursday, April 8, 2021 from 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
This networking event offers the opportunity to have discussions with employers who hire candidates with advanced degrees, giving the candidates opportunities to learn about the application process, the job opportunities in the company, current openings, expectations and more! Many of the representatives are UMBC alumni or part of organizations that hire UMBC alumni. The list of companies will be updated before the event.

We strongly recommend graduate students to have their resume reviewed by a Career Center advisor and to make sure their profile is updated in their UMBC Works account. Please keep a copy of your resume available in your email.
We will invite students to rotate at least by 3 different companies during the event.
All of the organizations who are participating have job openings in a variety of fields, for graduate students in each of our three colleges, including Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and all STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields.

Dr. Hrabowski has been talking about leadership skills and career paths for graduate students with this group for years and we appreciate his time. This conversation has always included a Q&A for students to connect with the campus president and share their points of view.
Dr. Hrabowski has been the president of UMBC since 1992. "At age 12, Freeman Hrabowski marched with Martin Luther King. In his 20+ years as an educator, he has work to create an environment that helps underrepresented students, specifically African-American, Latino, and low-income learners, get degrees in Math and Science."
Named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by the TIME (2012) and one of America's Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report (2008), he also received TIAA-CREF's Theodore M. Hesburgh Award for Leadership Excellence (2011), and the Heinz Award (2012) for contributions to improving the "Human Condition." UMBC has been recognized as a model for inclusive excellence by such publications as U.S. News, which the past eight years have recognized UMBC as a national leader in academic innovation and undergraduate teaching.

Prepare and Receive Notification Of When It's Your Turn
Baltimore County residents who want to be vaccinated should complete the below form.
Completing this form does NOT schedule a COVID-19 vaccination appointment. This form is intended to create a registry for those interested in receiving the vaccination as vaccine becomes available.
After completing the form, you will be contacted by Baltimore County staff once you become eligible AND when vaccines are available, with additional information about how to schedule your appointment.

Ditching the Distress

The life of a student trying to survive the pandemic, maintaining some sort of social life, getting your work done, and missing the closeness of family and friends can be really hard. Virtual learning and sitting in front of a screen all day may not have been what you imagined your college experience to be. If you are having some difficulty in managing your stress, school work, and social life, here are a few tips to help to reduce your stress.
If you are missing friends and family:
Schedule regular check-ins, a phone call or virtually, to find out what’s going on in their lives
Host a virtual movie or game night with lots of snacks
Text or call a friend/family member when they cross your mind
If the stress of everything is getting to you, try some of these stress relievers
Meditation to calm your mind (the calm app)
Listen to your favorite music
Take a break and watch your favorite tv show or movie
Engage in at least 30 minutes of physical activity to boost the feel good hormones
Print out some coloring book sheets or use a coloring app
Take a social media break for a few hours or even a few days
Zoom Fatigue is real! It’s normal to feel exhausted at the thought of logging in. Here are a few tips to help you make it through a day of class
Get some fresh air and sunlight between classes
Take a break from all of your screens (phone, tablet, gaming system, television)
Make sure you are well rested before class starts
Keep some energizing snacks nearby
If you are having trouble with getting your work done
Reach out to the Academic Success Center for tutoring resources and the writing center
Try the Pomodoro technique:
pick one task/assignment
set your timer for 20-30 minutes
work nonstop until the timer goes off
take a 5 minute break
reset your timer
repeat until you’re happy with your progress
Ask your professors and TAs for help
You are not alone in trying to adjust to the stress of living during such a crazy, historic time. These stress relievers are not meant to replace counseling services if they are needed to help navigate these times. UMBC has counseling resources available to you if you need to talk to a licensed professional about the mental health impact of everything, please reach out to the
UMBC counseling center for support and resources (410-455-2472 or call 410-455-3230 after hours).
