The application period to attend the Dissertation House closes on Tuesday, June 1, 2021.</p><p><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/gsa/posts/93370" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">myUMBC Registration Page</a></p><h3><strong>Event Details: </strong></h3><ul><li><span>The Dissertation House runs from 9 AM – 5 PM, <strong>for four days,</strong> Tuesday, July 6, 2021, through Friday, July 9, 2021.</span></li><li><span><strong>Students must plan to attend the full sessions, for each of the 4 days. </strong></span></li><li><span>The daily schedule includes 2 mini-lectures and 5 hours of writing per day.</span></li><li><span>The Dissertation House is free for UMBC’s graduate students.</span></li><li><span>There are 18 spaces available for the Dissertation House. </span></li><li><span>Details regarding eligibility can be found on the application page of the website for the Dissertation House.</span></li></ul><p><span><br></span></p><p><span>More information about the DissertationHouse: <a href="https://dissertationhouse.wordpress.com/about/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://dissertationhouse.wordpress.com/about/</a></span></p><br><hr><br><h3>Why should You apply to the Dissertation House?<br></h3><p><br></p><p>Students who participate in this program will spend each day thinking, writing, and sharing ideas about their doctoral dissertations.  Students will learn effective time-management skills; learn how to set small manageable goals, and will meet with a dissertation coach in one-on-one consultations to discuss and address obstacles that might prevent them from completing their degrees.<br><br></p><p>The <strong>Dissertation House </strong>activities focus on areas where students typically have difficulty: conceptualizing a topic, writing a literature review, transitioning from a proposal to a dissertation, analyzing data, writing the last chapter, and editing.<br><br></p><h3><strong>How to Apply</strong></h3><ol><li>Create a <strong>single word document</strong> with the following settings:<ol><li>font size 11-12 pt</li><li>1 inch margins<br><br></li></ol></li><li>Divide it into 2 sections - Part 1 and Part 2<br><br></li><li>In <strong>Part 1</strong>, type your header information on one page:<ol><li> Name</li><li>Address</li><li>Telephone numbers (mobile, home, office)</li><li>E-mail address</li><li>Academic Program</li><li>Year in program (1st year, 5th Year, etc)<br><br></li></ol></li><li>Type up a <strong>brief description (maximum 2 pages)</strong> that describes the project that you wish to accomplish during the Dissertation House period.<br><br></li><li>In <strong>Part 2</strong>, type up the following:<ol><li>Summary of the project, including research question(s), data, texts, and methods</li><li>Amount completed on the project to date</li><li>Any obstacles you have encountered that hinders completion of the dissertation<br><br></li></ol></li><li>Email application to <a href="mailto:promisestaff@gmail.com" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">promisestaff@gmail.com</a> using the subject line format: "Dissertation House Summer 2021 Application: FirstName LastName"</li></ol><p> <br><em>Applications will not be reviewed or accepted outside of the application enrollment period.<strong> </strong></em></p><p><strong>Dates: </strong>Tuesday, July 6 - Friday, July 9, 2021</p><p><strong>Location:</strong> ONLINE</p><p><strong>Selection Process:</strong> Eighteen (18) participants will be selected for participation in the Dissertation House.<br>The following applicants will have priority:</p><ol><li>Applicants who plan to finish the Ph.D. within the next 6 months</li><li>Individuals who are working on dissertations and theses rather than a proposal</li><li>Applicants who submit earliest, and</li><li>Individuals who appear most able to benefit from the services offered at the Dissertation House.</li></ol><p>If your application is accepted, you will receive an acceptance notice via email and additional details about the Dissertation House. <br><br>For more information, please email: <a href="mailto:promisestaff@gmail.com" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">promisestaff@gmail.com</a></p></div><hr><p><em>To ask questions about accessibility or request accommodations, please contact Yarazeth Medina at <strong><a href="mailto:yarazeth@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">yarazeth@umbc.edu</a>.</strong> At least two weeks' advance notice will help us to provide seamless access.</em></p></div>

  <Title>Seeking Graduate Senators for 2021-2022</Title>
  <Tagline>Apply to become a graduate senator today!</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><div>The GSA is seeking applications for senators who will serve throughout the next academic year. Such senators would have the following general responsibilities as they represent either their college or the general interests of all graduate students at UMBC:</div><div><br></div><div>1) Attend monthly meetings of the Graduate Senate between August 2021 and May 2022.</div><div>2) Work with other senators to host town halls between August 2021 and May 2022 aimed at gathering input and feedback from graduate students</div><div>3) Serve on at least one university committee</div><div>4) Other tasks as assigned by the Graduate Senate or Executive Council (such as following up on an issue or comment)</div><div><br></div><div>Senators who fulfill these responsibilities will be eligible to receive a stipend of $200 per semester.</div><div><br></div><div>Note that as the campus remains closed, the GSA Senate will plan to conduct business virtually (this will include meetings, town halls, events, etc). As any changes are announced, the GSA Executive Council will be sure to keep the GSA Senate informed. Many of the representatives are UMBC alumni or part of organizations that hire UMBC alumni.     <div class="html-content"><p>   On Thursday, March 25, 2021, at 1 PM PROMISE and the Graduate School at UMBC will be hosting our annual talk with Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski III!! He has graciously provided his time for this event since 2004! This year the conversation will have a twist, we'll center it around <strong>PERSEVERANCE</strong>. Everyone is invited to attend</p><p><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/promise/events/91035" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Click Link for Registration Page </a></p><p>    If you are looking for an opportunity to recharge this semester, have found yourself in a difficult position during the pandemic, or would like to join a group and have a laugh, please join us! We are very looking forward to seeing you and reconnect. Everyone is invited to attend! Dr. Hrabowski has been talking about leadership skills and career paths for graduate students with this group for years and we appreciate his time. This conversation has always included a Q&amp;A for students to connect with the campus president and share their points of view.</p><p>   Dr. Hrabowski has been the president of UMBC since 1992. "At age 12, Freeman Hrabowski marched with Martin Luther King. In his 20+ years as an educator, he has work to create an environment that helps underrepresented students, specifically African-American, Latino, and low-income learners, get degrees in Math and Science."</p><p>   Named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by the TIME (2012) and one of America's Best Leaders by U.S. News &amp; World Report (2008), he also received TIAA-CREF's Theodore M. Hesburgh Award for Leadership Excellence (2011), and the Heinz Award (2012) for contributions to improving the "Human Condition." UMBC has been recognized as a model for inclusive excellence by such publications as U.S. News, which the past eight years have recognized UMBC as a national leader in academic innovation and undergraduate teaching.</p></div>

    <Title>Ditching the Distress</Title>

          <div class="html-content"><div><p>The life of a student trying to survive the pandemic, maintaining some sort of social life, getting your work done, and missing the closeness of family and friends can be really hard. Virtual learning and sitting in front of a screen all day may not have been what you imagined your college experience to be. If you are having some difficulty in managing your stress, school work, and social life, here are a few tips to help to reduce your stress.</p><p> </p><p>If you are <a href="https://www.self.com/story/pandemic-lonliness" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">missing friends and family</a>:</p><ul><li><p>Schedule regular check-ins, a phone call or virtually, to find out what’s going on in their lives</p></li><li><p>Host a virtual movie or game night with lots of snacks</p></li><li><p>Text or call a friend/family member when they cross your mind</p></li></ul><p> </p><p>If the stress of everything is getting to you, try some of these stress relievers</p><ul><li><p>Meditation to calm your mind (<a href="https://www.calm.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">the calm app</a>)</p></li><li><p>Listen to your favorite music</p></li><li><p>Take a break and watch your favorite tv show or movie</p></li><li><p>Engage in at least 30 minutes of <a href="https://recreation.umbc.edu/fitness-wellness/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">physical activity</a> to boost <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/happy-hormone#food" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">the feel good hormones </a></p></li><li><p>Print out some coloring <a href="https://www.crayola.com/free-coloring-pages/adult-coloring-pages/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">book sheets</a> or use a coloring <a href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/adult-coloring-book-colors/id1040802159" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">app</a></p></li><li><p>Take a social media break for a few hours or even a few days</p></li></ul><p> </p><p>Zoom Fatigue is real! It’s normal to feel exhausted at the thought of logging in. Here are a few tips to help you make it through a day of class</p><ul><li><p>Get some fresh air and sunlight between classes</p></li><li><p>Take a break from all of your screens (phone, tablet, gaming system, television)</p></li><li><p>Make sure you are well rested before class starts</p></li><li><p>Keep some <a href="https://www.health.com/condition/sleep/5-energy-boosting-snacks?" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">energizing snacks</a> nearby</p></li></ul><br><p>If you are having trouble with getting your work done </p><ul><li><p>Reach out to the <a href="https://academicsuccess.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Academic Success Center</a> for tutoring resources and the writing center</p></li><li><p>Try the<a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/bryancollinseurope/2020/03/03/the-pomodoro-technique/?sh=3e37c1d33985" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Pomodoro technique</a>:</p></li><ul><li><p>pick one task/assignment </p></li><li><p>set your timer for 20-30 minutes</p></li><li><p>work nonstop until the timer goes off</p></li><li><p>take a 5 minute break</p></li><li><p>reset your timer</p></li><li><p>repeat until you’re happy with your progress</p></li></ul><li><p>Ask your professors and TAs for help</p></li></ul><br>You are not alone in trying to adjust to the stress of living during such a crazy, historic time. These stress relievers are not meant to replace counseling services if they are needed to help navigate these times.  UMBC has counseling resources available to you if you need to talk to a licensed professional about the mental health impact of everything, please reach out to the<a href="https://counseling.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> UMBC counseling center </a>for support and resources (410-455-2472 or call 410-455-3230 after hours).</div><div>University Health Services Link Below: </div><p><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/healthed/news/99928" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">View on myUMBC »</a></p></div>
