We will have updated guidelines soon for conducting GSO events amidst ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and university policies. This post details our Curbside Pickup Service for library books, laptops, and Digital Media Lab equipment.

Beginning Monday, August 17, you will be able to request books and laptops via the library catalog. 

For books and media, search for your item as usual in the catalog and click on "Request." For laptops, search the catalog for "UMBC laptop," select from Dell, Macbook, or Chromebook in the search results, and click on "Request." When your item is ready, you will receive an email to schedule your pickup time. Details on the service, including pickup times and the pickup location can be found  here: https://library.umbc.edu/curbside-pickup.php. For questions, contact the library's Circulation department at circlib-group@umbc.edu.

For Digital Media Lab equipment, you can view available equipment here: https://library.umbc.edu/media/dml.php and complete the A/V Equipment Reservation Form. This group, Fostering Online Learning Improvement and Opportunity (FOLIO),  will consist of a cohort of volunteer student peers, both undergraduate and graduate, who serve as a “brain trust”, for other students seeking information and resources regarding how to become successful, virtual learners in the time of COVID. 

This group which will consist of members drawn from all colleges, UAA, FDC, DOIT, Student Affairs, Student Disability Services, undergraduate and graduate student representatives and faculty senate representatives.

The committee is now currently seeking Student Ambassadors to join an online working group to serve in a peer-mentor role, to offer advice or connections to students looking for information.

The Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery will provide virtual and contactless services for the Fall 2020 semester. The Library and Gallery building will remain closed to users to ensure the safety of our staff and community.


We have been offering since closure March 13:


Beginning July 20:

  • Scanning of book chapters, journal articles, and archival materials from UMBC library collections, as well as purchasing individual journal articles, all for electronic delivery. Submit your request via Interlibrary Loan: https://umbc.illiad.oclc.org/illiad/logon.html. Chapter and article delivery from partner libraries may vary as conditions change.

The AOK Library is now accepting reserve requests in Blackboard for fall. While the library remains closed to patrons, please note the following before submitting your reserves.

1. We apologize for the inconvenience, but at this time we cannot accept reserves for hard copy materials. This may change later depending on restrictions, but for now, all reserves must be in an electronic format.

2. Please check if the books you need are already available in the catalog as ebooks or available online. Additional options for electronic editions are available via Open Educational Resources and Open Access Materials.

3. If the item is only available as hard copy, we may be able to create digital copies. Please limit these submissions to required reading and be specific about what sections you need, providing page numbers if you have them. If submitting items from previous semesters, we will prioritize by which items were most circulated. Please be patient as the scanning may take some time due to additional workload.

4. If you already have a scan from a previous semester, please copy it over or upload it when you submit the reserve item. For more information on copying reserves, please see the library website and our instructor's guide for detailed instructions. If the ereserve was used in a previous semester, we may still have it on file if you need help locating it.

5. If the university does not currently own the item you wish to place on reserve, we will try to purchase it as an ebook. However not all materials may be available for purchase in digital form.

6. We will see if films and music that we have on DVD/CD are available streaming, as we do not have the ability to digitize these items. Once the library opens for curbside pick-up, we may be able to lend these items.

7. If you have a personal copy of a book the library does not own that you would like us to digitize for reserves, please email reserves-group@umbc.edu to arrange mail-in or drop-off.
