Virtual Graduate Student Town Hall on Friday May 8th!
Dear Graduate Students,
We are approaching the end of the spring 2020 semester and find ourselves in a very different place from where we were at the start of the semester in January. The transition to social distancing by staying at home and accessing our academic, research and personal lives virtually has been challenging for all of us. We are all doing our part to slow the spread of COVID-19, but we also look forward to the next phase of life. The uncertainty of when and how this will happen leads to stress and anxiety, and we want you to know that we’ve been focused on doing what we can to meet your needs.
The Graduate School and the Graduate Student Association (GSA) are hosting a virtual Town Hall meeting on Friday, May 8, 2:00-3:00 pm, to share information and answer questions you may have about all aspects of your academic progression and success at UMBC. We invite you to submit questions as you register to participate in the Town Hall here. The Webex link will be sent to all those who register, and will be shared with the graduate student email group on Friday morning.
Topics to be covered at the Town Hall include the planning underway for a phased opening of the campus for research and creative achievement, core facilities and classroom instruction; changes to academic policies that respond to the unusual circumstances of the spring semester; supporting your mental wellness; and issues of interest to graduate assistants.

Drop-off Locations for Residential Students Only
Safely return USM library materials
Residential students who have a scheduled move-out time, please bring your library materials to campus. Arrangements have been made for you to safely return USM library materials during your visit.
There are three curb-side locations for library materials* drop-off through Friday, May 22:
- Center Road at Erickson Hall
- Poplar Road at True Grits
- Front entrance to Apartment Community Center
*Books, DVDs, CDs & DML equipment. You are able to return books, CDs, and DVDs from all USM libraries.
Please return laptops to the UMBC Police station, which remains open.
You will not be charged a late fee, even if you have received an overdue or
replacement fee notice. Once the item is checked in, the fine will be
cancelled. This amnesty will be in effect for a few months.
This message applies only to students who have scheduled a move-out time
with Residential Life. General return of library material is not available
at this time, as we are still operating under the Governor's order to limit
non essential travel.

Documenting COVID-19 Experiences at UMBC
Add your voice to the University Archives
We are interested in your stories about the shift to remote instruction and learning, studying and working from home, working at on-campus and off-campus jobs, the impact of closing residence halls and other campus services, the ways you and your friends and family are staying in touch during this period of social distancing and self-quarantine, the emotional impact of the pandemic, and so on.
How you record your thoughts and experiences is up to you. For instance, you can write in a journal, record voice memos, save your social media posts, take photographs and/or videos of life as you see it, or create multimedia works of digital storytelling.

Library resources for research from home!
Welcome to the all online environment! The Library has many ways to provide research assistance and other help during the emergency and there are some things you should know:
THE BAD NEWS
The library building is closed, no one allowed in or out, including the atrium and RLC. This means no books, reserves, media, laptops, or DML equipment is available for check-out, and USMAI borrowing and Interlibrary Loan are not operating.
THE GOOD NEWS
For information about library services currently available please see https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts/91400.
We request that you hold on to all Library materials for the time being. Fines and fees for currently checked-out material are suspended for the duration. Automatic messages may still go out, so if you are worried about an item being overdue, email the Circulation Department at circlib-group@umbc.edu.
Reference staff are available in chat from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Look for the “Ask a Librarian” box at the edges of the library homepage. Questions asked before or after chat hours will be answered by email.

Library Hours and Services Update, 6/18/2020
AOK Library & Gallery CLOSED until further notice

In accordance with the campus holiday closure, the Library's virtual services will be closed on Friday, July 3.
For the health and safety of the UMBC community, the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery building, including the atrium and Retriever Learning Center, will be closed until further notice. For updates on reopening, please consult UMBC’s website: https://covid19.umbc.edu/ or the Library website, https://library.umbc.edu/.
Overdue fines WILL NOT accrue during this period while the physical campus is closed.
Curbside Returns: You may drop off materials on campus without physical contact. Click here for a campus map with drop off locations. To avoid damage, please DO NOT put equipment or laptops in these bins. Do not leave items outside of the library.

The Internet Archive has also made available the National Emergency Library, "a collection of books that supports emergency remote teaching, research activities, independent scholarship, and intellectual stimulation while universities, schools, training centers, and libraries are closed."
Interlibrary Loan is operating at a reduced level, but may be able to provide article or chapter scans from our databases and e-journals, as well as from databases and e-journals from our resource sharing partners. Although we are not able to scan items from UMBC's print collections, we may be able to locate them for you online or from a vendor. Complete a request form on our website, https://umbc.illiad.oclc.org/illiad/logon.html, or contact us at illcm@umbc.edu.
At this time, we are not able to provide access to physical course reserve items or book or media items on hold. Please monitor the Library's web page for updates on these services.

Library Hours and Services
Update on Coronavirus Planning
Library hours and services are in flux due to campus planning for COVID-19 (coronavirus). Please stay tuned to MyUMBC or the Library & Gallery website for the most recent information and hours.
All Library & Gallery events are canceled until at least April 6, per University policy.
Students and instructors with materials on course reserve: some physical reserves materials may be available in our catalog as e-books, on sites that allow streaming of media items, or are accessible via the public domain. If the item is not available electronically, the Reserves (or ILL) staff, upon request, may be able to digitize assigned readings from items on Course Reserves and post to Blackboard. We are unable to reproduce content from a disc. Please allow a minimum of five business days for requests to digitize course materials. Staff will prioritize requests by the assignment due date whenever possible.
For requests to digitize course readings, please obtain the name and number of the course and share the digital copy with the Reserves staff (reserves-group@umbc.edu).
For inquiries regarding due dates and fines, nothing will become due from Sunday March 15th through Sunday March 22nd. All USM libraries will be lenient with fines if campuses close post March 22nd. Note that some short-term loan items may become due whenever the owning library is open. Patrons do need to be mindful of honoring such due dates – i.e. course reserves, and media items and equipment.
In conjunction with partners from four other Maryland higher education institutions, the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery is working on a grant-funded project entitled 'A Roadmap to the Future of Promotion and Tenure' that explores how openness, equity, diversity, and inclusion might be more strongly recognized and rewarded in promotion and tenure practices. As part of those efforts, we are conducting a survey of tenured and tenure-track faculty at Maryland academic institutions to learn about current policies and practices, faculty values, and opinions about how policies and practices align with those values. The survey has been reviewed by the Office of Research at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and determined to be non-human subjects research.
We invite UMBC Tenure-Track and Tenured Faculty to take the survey.
Background:
This project is funded by the Association of College & Research Libraries and led by the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery at UMBC with four partner libraries at other Maryland academic institutions: Johns Hopkins, Towson University, University of Baltimore, and University of Maryland, College Park. Orientation Advising Opportunities for Grad Students
Gain valuable experience & a small stipend for summer work!
The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for summer Orientation Advisors! As an advisor, you would attend Orientation sessions where you would meet with undergraduate students one-on-one to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, all training necessary will be provided!
Besides compensation, this is an excellent opportunity to gain professional and interpersonal experience. Depending on your field, your time as a student may not open you up to many client-facing interactions, and this is a pathway to gaining that experience. If you are considering a career in academia, meanwhile, advising experience is highly sought-after in faculty openings.
- Graduate students are eligible to be compensated at the rate of $100 per all-day session and $50 per evening session.
More details are provided in the application attached, which is due HERE by May 1, 2020. The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising will also be hosting a number of informational sessions for those who may be interested:
- Wednesday, March 11, 12-1 PM at Sherman Hall 220 (B-Wing, 2nd Floor)
- Thursday, March 26, 12-1 PM at Sherman Hall 220 (B-Wing, 2nd Floor)
