National Library Week at UMBC April 9-15, 2017

Please join Albin O. Kuhn Library  Gallery this week in celebrating National Library Week. This year’s theme is Libraries Transform and the UMBC community and Library staff are asking “What does transformation look like at our library?” In light of the ongoing international refugee crises as well as the larger immigration conversation here in the U.S., the Library has chosen to showcase authors and other creators in our collections from some of the countries impacted by the 2017 travel ban. Be sure to stop by the new display in the Reference area of the first floor.

The capstone event of UMBC’s participation in National Library Week is a Humanities Forum lecture given by Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress. Thursday evening’s event, titled “A Conversation About Digital Access,” will begin at 5:30 pm in the Linehan Concert Hall in the Performing Arts & Humanities Building. This event is free and open to the public.

RESPONSIBILITIES:    The incumbent will support the mission of the Circulation Department by coordinating activities related to USM-AI intercampus borrowing. Specific duties include: satisfying book requests using a quick and efficient work flow of shipping and receiving items; using an automated system to process library transactions; performing stacks maintenance; providing support to library patrons needing assistance with library resources and equipment, printing, and basic research help; performing security duties such as opening, closing and patrolling the building, and applying measures to prevent theft of library materials; providing excellent customer service; and performing other duties as assigned. Work Schedule is Sunday 11:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. and Monday to Thursday 4:00 p.m. -12:30 a.m.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:    Requires a High School Diploma or GED and at least one year of library or related clerical or public service experience. Must have experience in a customer service environment serving a diverse population, with preference given to experience in a library’s circulation or stacks department. Must have: highly effective communication and interpersonal skills; the ability to provide guidance and instructions to student assistants and to organize work to meet conflicting demands while maintaining careful attention to detail; the demonstrated ability to work independently, to work cooperatively on a team, and to exercise initiative in applying rules, procedures and instructions. Note: This position may require a background check.

SALARY:    Pay Range 7 (starting at $30,177) based on the University System of Maryland Pay Program

It tracks the development of the modern, western world through the lens of trade and wealth.Titles are in English as well as many other languages.

Access is seamless on campus, for off-campus access, use password > umd_umbc < when prompted.

The Library is testing a new service allowing students to reserve Study Rooms. We've set aside 6 study rooms on the 3rd floor for this pilot program.  To reserve one, use this form or try the touchscreen kiosk near the 3rd floor elevators.

These are the rules we're starting with:

  1. Reservations are limited to 3 hours per person or group each day.
  2. Reservations can be made up to five days in advance.
  3. Although the room is a more private space, please be mindful not to disturb others.
  4. Clean up the room before you leave.
  5. Reservations containing inappropriate language may be canceled without warning.

Burns, M.D. Donates Collection to UMBC Stanley B. Burns donates 252 daguerreotypes
Stanley B. Burns, M.D., historian, collector, and physician, recently donated a part of his daguerreotype collection to the Photography Collections of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).  The gift of 252 daguerreotypes continues Dr. Burns’ long relationship with UMBC.

As an historian, Dr. Burns has written over 1,100 articles and over forty books on subjects ranging from Victorian funeral portraits to early oncology.  His books Sleeping Beauty: Memorial Photography In America, and Forgotten Marriage:  The Painted Tintype & The Decorative Frame, 1860-1910, A Lost Chapter in American Portraiture both received American Photographic Historical Society awards for best publications.

Among the donated works are both signed and unsigned daguerreotypes, that is, ones for which the photographer is identified and ones for which the photographer is anonymous.  The anonymous ones are valued for the uniqueness of the imagery, the interesting representations of nineteenth century people, and the material culture characteristics.  The identified ones are valued for these same qualities as well as having information about the photographers.  More than seventy different photographers are represented among the signed works, including daguerreotypists such as Charles Deforest Fredericks, Rufus Anson, John Plumbe, Jr., Samuel Broadbent, and Jessie Whitehurst.

The gift substantially increases the holdings of daguerreotypes at UMBC.
