UMBC now has online access to the Routledge Encyclopedia of Modernism.
The Routledge Encyclopedia of Modernism brings together a wealth of interdisciplinary content about the Modernist period. Content is fully cross-referenced and covers eight key subject areas: Literature, Architecture, Visual Arts, Music, Dance, Theatre, Film, and Intellectual Currents.
Trial access is available on campus; off-campus users must the the VPN.
The trial runs through November 19, 2016. Feedback on the usefulness of this resources is appreciated.

Brian V. Jones photographs, Special Collections highlight
Street Scenes & African American Churches of the D.C. area
The Special Collections at the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery is very pleased to announce that our
Brian V. Jones photographs have been described and the
finding aid* is now available online!
Brian V. Jones is a local documentary style photographer, born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1952. He has a Bachelor’s degree from Howard University and a Master’s degree from Illinois Institute of Technology. He has been a professor of photography since the late 1980s and his photographs are in the collections of the National Museum of American Art, the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture, Colgate University, and in numerous private collections. Since 1980, he has focused on diverse large scale projects. He currently serves as Professor of Photography and Coordinator of the Media Arts & Technologies Dept. at Montgomery College in Rockville, MD.
This collection consists of 165 gelatin silver prints (black-and-white) and chromogenic color prints by photographer Brian V. Jones and is comprised of three series**: Series I: Street Scenes; Series II: African American Churches in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., 1981-1989; and Series III: Connecticut Avenue Series. The Brian V. Jones photographs have also been added to our
Researching African-American Photographers research guide.

Below is a sampling from this collection:
From Series I we have Crowd at DuPont Circle fountain (Box 1, item P2010-25-019) and Park benches and bird on water fountain (Box 8, item P2010-25-155).
From Series II there is Shiloh Baptist Church (Box 2, item P2010-25-040) and St. Paul’s Community Church (P2010-25-047).
From Series III we have Anchorage (Box 6, item P2010-25-126) and Saw Player (Box7, item P2010-25-140)
There are currently plans underway to digitize the entire collection. Any students interested in interning on this project should contact
Special Collections.
* A finding aid is a description of materials that assists users to gain access to and understand the materials. They provide context about the collection and consolidate information about the collection, often including administrative history or biographical note of the creator; scope of the collection, including size, subjects, media; organization and arrangement; and a container list with box, folder, and sometimes item listing.
** A series is a mid-level organizational concept used by archivists to organize a collection. In general, items in archives, and here in Special Collections, are organized by collection, series, box, folder, and finally item. However, this is highly dependent upon the size of a collection; some collections consist of a single box, others span many boxes such as the Brian V. Jones photographs which are housed in 8 boxes (and take up 10.25 linear feet!). Linear feet is a measurement used by archives to estimate the amount of space a collection will take up, the Brian V. Jones photographs use over ten feet of shelf space. To learn more about primary sources and how to use them check out:

Writing for Professional Development
Graduate Student Writing for Professional Development
PROMISE
will be hosting their annual graduate writing seminar, sponsored by GSA and
PROMISE AGEP! Their guest speakers will discuss writing topics for professional
development. Susan Hindle, Assistant Director of Internships and Employment at
the Career Center, will be talking about writing to acquire employment -
personal statements, cover letters, resume. Susan will also likely touch on
other resources available through the career center. Dr. Kevin Omland,
Professor in the Biological Sciences Department, will discuss writing for
publications: how to choose journals to submit to, how to evaluate
those journals to curtail one's own writing, how to improve one's chances at
finally acquiring publication. Dr. Christine Mallinson will touch on
topics like writing for Theses, Dissertations and other
academia-facing projects. Please come to listen to seminars on writing for
professional development!

RLC/Gallery remain closed following Library water leak
Writing Center/Math Lab to reopen Weds Oct 5
UPDATE: The Writing Center and Math Lab will reopen on Weds Oct 5 in the Library.
The RLC and Library Gallery will remain closed today due to a water leak on Sunday night. The Writing Center is operating from Sherman Hall room 354. The Math Lab is operating in the Library, near the Print/Copy station on the 1st floor. All other Library services are open and operating normally.

Eighteenth Century Journals Portal - Database Trial
Trial ends October 25, 2016
UMBC now has trial access to the Eighteenth Century Journals Portal from Adam Matthew.
Bringing together rare journals printed between c.1685 and 1835, this resource illuminates all aspects of eighteenth-century social, political and literary life. Topics covered are wide-ranging and include colonial life, provincial and rural affairs, the French and American revolutions, reviews of literature and fashion throughout Europe, political debates, and London coffee house gossip and discussion.
Trials are available on campus, off-campus users must use the VPN

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County! On September 19, 1966, students were welcomed to the new UMBC campus which consisted of only three completed buildings: Academic One, Gym 1, and Lecture Hall One, and had only eighteen areas of study available. Fast forward to today and UMBC has over forty different academic, residential, and student life buildings and offers 48 different majors.
Visit the new exhibition in the Library Gallery, "Sharing the Past, Building the Future: UMBC at 50" to explore some of the many stories of the university's exciting beginning and continuing development through items selected from UMBC's University Archives, including photographs, documents, objects, books, and ephemera!

Archives Gold #49: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th
An Aerial Photograph of Future UMBC Campus from 1963
Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present an aerial photograph from 1963 of the farmland UMBC would later be built upon.

The land on which UMBC is currently built was previously owned by the Baltimore Manual Labor School and later Spring Grove Hospital. Superintendent of the labor school, Edmund Stabler, kept the school operational from 1839 to 1922 with the purpose of instructing and supporting poor and orphaned boys from Baltimore City. The boys were taught how to read and were instructed in agriculture or other useful occupations in preparation to earn a living. When Spring Grove Hospital purchased the land after a fire in 1922, they used the farmland for a patient agricultural rehabilitation program.
When plans began for the expansion of the University of Maryland system in the 1940s and 1950s, the state looked to the acreage near Catonsville that included the former Baltimore Manual Labor School, the current Spring Grove Hospital, and additional adjacent tracts of land. After a long process, the Board of Regents approved official plans in the early 1960s and workers began construction on the new University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
