The BreakingGround initiative awards grants of up to $2,500.00 to UMBC faculty, staff, and students to implement educational and community-building courses and programs that foster civic agency: the capacity to initiate and make meaningful contributions to social change.
The options for using these funds are flexible, but some ideas include: experiential learning opportunities for students, student and community-engaged research projects, time to design deep transformations of existing curricula to be oriented toward civic agency, and resources for engagement with social changemakers and local communities. New Library System Coming in Summer 2024
UMBC and all USMAI Libraries to migrate to Ex Libris' Alma and Primo systems over Spring 2024
This spring, UMBC along with the 17 libraries across the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI) will be implementing a new integrated library system (ILS), Alma, that will go live on May 23, 2024. Throughout the spring, our migration task force will be working to replace the current system, which has been in place for over 20 years.
An integrated library system manages the basic functions of a library, such as checking library materials in and out, keeping track of orders and subscriptions, and providing the infrastructure that allows library users to search and access library materials. This system migration is a huge step forward, and will help modernize UMBC's current functionality and usability, increasing cooperation with other systems across our campus and with other academic institutions across the state.
A new discovery service will power the AOK OneSearch, and it will streamline search functions and your access to local resources and scholarly research. You will notice more features that will allow you to more easily manage your loans, requests, and citations. Keep an eye out for a preview of the search interface in the coming months.
We will be providing updates as the project continues throughout the spring especially with information on any temporary service changes or suspensions as the new system is prepared. If you have any questions please reach out to aok@umbc.edu

The Collective Bargaining Bill is just round the corner, and we - the Graduate Student Association (GSA), want to know your stance on the bill. This survey's purpose is to understand how graduate assistants (GAs) at UMBC are currently feeling about their financial situation, including things such as housing, routine expenses, and GA benefits in relation to the current bill that will allow USM GAs the right to unionize.
