The Career Center invites you to meet over 200 employers for networking, internship, and full-time opportunities! Plus we will have the LinkedIn Photo Booth set up during the Fair so you can get a professional headshot taken for your LinkedIn/Handshake profiles. Remember to bring 15-20 copies of your resume, and please note that for security reasons, all items brought with you must stay with you while attending the fair. How can you be successful at the fair?
  • Dress like a professional (PDF)
  • Get your resume reviewed at the Career Center beforehand
    • Drop in during Express Hours on Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. at UU 225
    • You can have your resume and cover letter reviewed by submitting the documents in Word docs (.doc, .docx) to expresshours@towson.edu. Please note, it may take up to 5 business days for your documents to be reviewed.
  • Download the Handshake Jobs & Career app (iOS or Android) to research employers in advance and prepare intelligent questions
  • Practice your 30-second commercial (PDF)
  • Print out multiple copies of your reviewed resume (around 10-20 copies)

This event will be taking place on March 16th, 2022, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM

The semester is flying by, Spring Break is almost upon us! We at PROMISE realize that we haven't had an opportunity this semester to gather around, drink coffee, and eat donuts with you all! As such, we've decided to host an informal gathering at Commons 329 and hope you will join us. We will provide the coffee and donuts to share and invite you to stop to say hi and catch up with us and other graduate students.

We (Dr. Robin Cresiski and Yarazeth Medina) will be available to talk about the Grad Student and Postdoc Development Office (GSPD), PROMISE, the calendar of professional development events, our latest Netflix Binges, and hopefully, create even more of an opportunity for you to meet fellow grad students in other departments. We would love to help you develop a deeper sense of community here on campus. If you just feel like stopping for free coffee and a donut, you are more than welcome to do so as well! 

Please click on "Going" below so we can be sure to have enough coffee and donuts for all who plan to attend. 

As this is an in-person event, please RSVP so we can be sure we are following safety guidelines per UMBC. Additionally, if you must cancel, please be sure to do it within 24 hours of the event's occurrence.

The GSA senate voted to submit testimony in favor of SB0118 (HB0751) to allow collective bargaining rights to University System of Maryland Graduate Assistants. Post-hearing testimony has been sent to all members of the MD Senate Finance Committee. The testimony bases its  support on advocacy from almost 100 UMBC graduate students in a poll of graduate students, in addition to offering support for graduate assistants on other campuses who have not reaped much benefit from the current meet and confer process. Here is some of the general sentiment expressed by graduate students in support of the bill. 

"I believe that difference between the stipend and living standard cost is much more higher. One graduate student can not bear the living cost with the existing amount they are getting."

"I SUPPORT THE CBB because it empowers us to assert our needs should the university ever fail to address them. The fact that the school has tried to advocate against it shows that we need that security. Studies consistently show that GAs are better paid and have better benefits if they're unionized than if they aren't."

"I think we should have the right to be more involved in the negotiation of our reimbursement for the work we do on campus and for campus"

"Graduate students and GA's in particular consistently feel unsafe and undervalued in their contracts and have no where to go since we are 'trapped' by our desire to further our education. We also have no one to talk to since the chain of command goes to our supervisors and GPDs, which are not always sympathetic to our worries"

"Graduates should have the option to unionize as it will give us a voice and those with GAs in genera are not given enough support in the university."

Some of the sentiment by the minority against the bill:

"I don't see the need for a union, and I don't think unionizing is going to improve the quality of my experience at UMBC"

"I do not agree with this bill because it does not actually guarantee us anything. It doesn't seem worth it."

"-Potential to lose FICA exemption
-Potential to have health insurance premium increase (which is currently $0); our current health insurance is very good and not something I would want to lose. Also, as a graduate student, income from stipend is already low --having additional annual costs (e.g. insurance premiums) would make things even more difficult
-Potential decrease in graduate assistantships --this is already low and barely covers cost-of-living for most students"

What are Writing Accountability Group, or WAGs at UMBC?

  • What: Writing Accountability Groups (WAGs) are voluntary and facilitated by fellow UMBC graduate students

  • Who: WAGs are comprised of a group of graduate students (usually 4-8 participants per group) interested in developing writing habits and accountability 

  • Why: Develop habits of writing every day for a short, manageable period of time by setting goals and being accountable to WAG peers 

  • When: WAG groups meet once a week for 60-90 minutes for 10-12 weeks. The group finds a weekly time mutually convenient to all group members.

  • Where: The group decides on a mutually convenient location to meet, whether in person or online via WebEx or other video conferencing platform
