Pathways to Leadership: Talking with Dr. Freeman Hrabowski Nationally celebrated for his collaborative leadership

This event is open to all UMBC members! Particularly for graduate students, postdocs, and early-career faculty from underrepresented backgrounds.

 

This is Dr. Hrabowski’s last talk as UMBC President for the PROMISE AGEP program at UMBC. He has mentored hundreds of graduate students and successfully helped them finish their degrees at UMBC. He has celebrated every single dissertation defense with us and has been there every step of the way following on students hardships through the years; stopping to say hi to everyone on his way to multiple events and meetings, always asking how they are doing, when we talk about Dr. Hrabowski’s leadership approach we must say “it’s all about the people”. We’ll miss him dearly and we hope this event serves to honor his legacy at UMBC.

 

In the words of University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents Chair Linda Gooden: “People seek out Freeman’s advice because they understand that, in many ways, he’s set the standard for supporting students to success—and I mean all students: students from every background, every race and ethnicity, every income level. He’s set the standard for collaborative leadership and continuous organizational improvement.”

 

According to NSF data, UMBC is now the nation’s top producer of Black graduates who go on to obtain a Ph.D. in the natural sciences and engineering. All this has been thanks to the visionary leadership of Dr. Hrabowski and we hope you join us in this talk with a national leader in science and math education, to celebrate his more than 30 years of leadership in academia, let’s use this opportunity to help path our own leadership style and learn from one of the best. The Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship will host the second Speaker Series of 2022 at the Library Gallery Wednesday, March 29th from noon to 1pm. Come see Founder & CEO of B360, Brittany Young, present “Empathy to Action: How to use Entrepreneurship to Grow Community &  Impact”. 


Brittany plans to talk about how to control the narrative and make systemic change by empowering the people closest to the problem.   The session is designed to uplift participants to become change agents, allies and accomplices to develop ideals that can be shared and incorporated to create systemic change.

We are working on creating a series of student videos, featuring undergraduate and graduate students, to support Retriever Integrated Health's (RIH) Reach Out Retrievers initiative. Reach Out Retrievers is the first step (hopefully with many more steps to follow) in making a campus commitment to supporting and improving the mental health of our entire campus community. These pieces will be shared during the month of April on RIH and other campus partner social media pages. Additionally, these videos will  be paired with information about online mental health tools that students can take advantage of right now. 

There are three ways to participate: 
  • Send a video 
  • Send an audio recording
  • Provide a written submission
In the submission, we would like for students to use the following questions to guide their thoughts:
  • How has your mental health changed since you started at UMBC?
    • If needed, what did you do to handle those changes?
  • What do you wish you would have done differently to support your mental? OR What are you happy that you have done to support your mental health?
  • What would you say to others with your same mental health experience?
If submitting a video or audio recording, here are some things to consider:
  • Videos and audio recordings should be between 30 and 60 seconds
  • Students are welcome to use their phone to record  (preferably with the front-facing camera) 
  • Students are welcome to share their name, graduation year, and  major in the recording. 
    • If a student does not feel comfortable sharing this information, they do not have to include it in the recording
  • The videos don't need to be very polished
If providing a written submission, please students can include their name, graduation year, and  major. 
  • If a student does not feel comfortable sharing this information, they do not have to include it in the submission (the submission will be shared as quotes) 
If you know a student that would be willing to participate, please have them email Samantha Smith (samsmith@umbc.edu) to confirm participation. You are welcome to forward this message along to others.

We are excited to share a valuable career and professional development opportunity. This event will showcase the biomedical research of exceptional scholars, including:•Late-stage doctoral students who are less than two years from completing their Ph.D. program• Early-stage postdoctoral scholars who are no more than two years post-degree.

The Event Selected scholars will be invited to:
•Present research in an oral format.
•Network with other students, post doctoral fellows and faculty.
•Attend a reception to celebrate diversity and science.
•Participate in a professional development session.
•Tour laboratories and core facilities.
•Meet with faculty to learn about available post doctoral opportunities at our Institute.

Diversity Initiative

Scholars from groups underrepresented in the sciences are strongly encouraged to apply.
 

Application

Through our online application portal, Rising Stars Symposium candidates will:

-Complete the online application that includes a brief diversity statement
-Submit a CV
-Provide the contact information of the principal investigator, research advisor or mentor who can serve as a reference

Selections : Selected scholars will be notified by March 8, 2022, and will have a week to confirm participation.

Eligibility: Late-stage doctoral students who are less than two years from completing Ph.D. program and early-stage postdoctoral researchers who are no more than two years post-degree in the biomedical sciences. Priority will be given to underrepresented groups as outlined by the NIH.

Tuesdays, 3PM-4:15 PM

Reflecting Retrievers: Graduate Student Support Group is a semester-long group geared towards students in masters’ and doctoral programs. This group is designed to provide a safe and confidential environment for graduate students to discuss the stress and challenges they’re facing being in grad school. Members will also have space to find support related to personal difficulties they may be experiencing. We hope that the group cultivates deep and meaningful conversations and contributes to group members’ emotional wellbeing.


Students must be located in the state of MD during group time. To join, students should call RIH at 410-455-2542 to complete a triage and a pre-group screening appointment.

Students of Color Process Group

Tuesdays, 1-2:30pm
Students of Color Process Group is a semester-long group for Spring 2022. It is specifically designed to provide students (undergraduate and graduate) who identify as students of color with a safe and confidential space to obtain emotional support, find a sense of connection, and learn from others' experiences. We will also discuss stressors and challenges related to navigating social, academic, and work spaces in the face of systemic oppression and racism. The ultimate goal is for members to gain greater self-knowledge, improve their self-esteem, and develop more meaningful relationships.

Students must be located in the state of MD during group time. To join, students should call RIH at 410-455-2542 to complete a triage and a pre-group screening appointment.

Day & Time: Tuesday, 1PM-2:30PM (Starting March 1st)
