    <p>This is an annual event. We have been hosting the Fall Harvest Dinner since 2003. This event is free for all graduate students and postdocs who attend an institution within the University System of Maryland (USM), and who support the mission of PROMISE: Maryland’s AGEP. <em><strong>The mission of PROMISE is to increase the numbers and diversity of STEM faculty by supporting and training underrepresented minority graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in STEM disciplines.</strong></em></p>

    <p>We will sponsor a bus for this activity. The bus will leave from UMBC, and can make a stop at BWI airport if that is convenient. To take the bus, send email to <a href="mailto:PROMISEstaff@gmail.com">PROMISEstaff@gmail.com</a> with the subject “Bus to Fall Harvest 2014.” Indicate BWI or UMBC for pick-up and droffoff.     <div class="html-content"><p>Each year, PROMISE and the Graduate School at UMBC host a dinner seminar that allows graduate students to ask questions of faculty. This year, the  “When Faculty Say ‘X’ … ” seminar will be held on Friday, October 10, 2014 in BIO 120.</p>
    <p>This is your chance to ask the faculty any questions about expectations, understanding requirements, how they say “no”, how they show their approval, etc.</p>
    <p>We will also reflect upon and review past advice from faculty representing many departments in all colleges throughout UMBC.</p>
    <p>Your feedback makes this annual session special. <em><strong>Do you have a question that you want a faculty member to answer? <span>Post it in the comment section of this post at the bottom of this page. You may post anonymously.</span></strong> </em></p>

    <p><em>Facilitators: The National GEM Consortium.</em> <a href="http://gemfellowship.org/about/about-gem" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">The GEM Mission:</a> The mission of The National GEM Consortium is to enhance the value of the nation’s human capital by increasing the participation of underrepresented groups (African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans) at the master’s and doctoral levels in engineering and science.</p>

    <p>We will sponsor a bus from UMBC to go to College Park on Saturday, September 20. <em><strong>The bus is available to students from any school within the USM who is interested in attending.</strong></em> Undergraduate students, graduate student mentors, postdoctoral mentors, staff and faculty mentors are all welcome to ride the bus.  Details for the bus will be posted in the comments section below after all details are finalized.</p>

She is working with colleagues at College Park’s <em>Teaching and Learning Transformation Center </em>at Marie Mount Hall to allow students from other campuses to participate<em>.</em></p>

    <p>Dr. Kamens received her PhD in Genetics from Harvard Medical School then spent 15 years at BASF/Abbott, ultimately serving as Group Leader in Molecular Biology. In 2007 she joined RXi Pharmaceuticals as Senior Director of Research Collaborations. In 2011, Dr. Kamens became the Executive Director of Addgene, a mission driven, non-profit dedicated to helping scientists around the world share plasmid reagents. Dr. Kamens has been raising awareness of women scientists since 1998 upon realizing that an entire week had gone by at work and not one other woman had been at any meeting she attended. Dr. Kamens founded the current Boston chapter of the Association for Women in Science. Dr. Kamens was Director of the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association Boston Group Mentoring Program for 3 years. In 2010, Dr. Kamens received the Catalyst Award from the Science Club for Girls for longstanding dedication to empowering women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. She is a Fellow of the Massachusetts Academy of Science recognizing scientific accomplishment and service to the science community and the public and was recognized as one of the 2013 PharmaVoice 100 Most Inspiring.</p>

    <div class="html-content"><p>Through our collaborate PROMISE grant, PROMISE AGEP: Maryland Transformation, students throughout the University System of Maryland are eligible to attend professional seminars and workshops at UMBC, UMB, and UMCP.  If the event is listed on the main PROMISE website, please follow the directions to RSVP. Several seminars have university-specific registration processes.     <p><span><span><strong>Teaching and Learning Workshops </strong></span></span><br>
    Dr. Alexis Williams, the new Assistant Director for the Professors-in-Training (PROF-it) program, a subsidiary of PROMISE, will update the <a href="http://promiseagep.wordpress.com/archived-posts/prof-it-professors-in-training/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">PROF-it page</a> with information about teaching workshops at College Park. She is working with colleagues at College Park’s <em>Teaching and Learning Transformation Center </em>at Marie Mount Hall to allow students from other campuses to participate<em>.</em></p>

The directorate, one of three within ECBC, supports the Department of Defense, as well as other government agencies by providing innovative science and technology solutions for chemical and biological defense.</p>

    <p>Dr. Kamens received her PhD in Genetics from Harvard Medical School then spent 15 years at BASF/Abbott, ultimately serving as Group Leader in Molecular Biology. In 2007 she joined RXi Pharmaceuticals as Senior Director of Research Collaborations. In 2011, Dr. Kamens became the Executive Director of Addgene, a mission driven, non-profit dedicated to helping scientists around the world share plasmid reagents. Dr. Kamens has been raising awareness of women scientists since 1998 upon realizing that an entire week had gone by at work and not one other woman had been at any meeting she attended. Dr. Kamens founded the current Boston chapter of the Association for Women in Science. Dr. Kamens was Director of the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association Boston Group Mentoring Program for 3 years. In 2010, Dr. Kamens received the Catalyst Award from the Science Club for Girls for longstanding dedication to empowering women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. She is a Fellow of the Massachusetts Academy of Science recognizing scientific accomplishment and service to the science community and the public and was recognized as one of the 2013 PharmaVoice 100 Most Inspiring.</p>
