PROMISE will be visiting the Aerospace Corporation (http://www.aero.org) on Tuesday, June 5 at their Chantilly, VA office. In accordance with their mission, they would like to meet PROMISE graduate students (US citizens) in EE, CS, Aerospace, and Cybersecurity. They are hiring interns and would like to start a relationship with students who are interested in full-time positions or post-docs.  We have 10 spaces available for M.S. and Ph.D. students for this one-day trip? If  you are interested, please have them send your CVs, unofficial transcript, and a short paragraph that describes your interest to rtull@umbc.edu, with “Aerospace Corp.” in the subject line by Wednesday, May 9, 2012 .  Lunch will be served on-site at Aerospace.  Aerospace Engineer, Dr. Clyde V. Moseberry has already been mentoring some of the students from PROMISE over the years.  He is looking forward to meeting the group.

A van will leave UMBC’s campus, Administration Building at 8:30 AM, and is scheduled to return by 5:00 PM. The trip is co-sponsored by PROMISE and the Aerospace Corporation. There is no cost to the student.

With the uncertainty present in today’s job market, technical college graduates are under increasing pressure to choose a career path that not only fits their personal strengths and interests. but is sustainable. Jobs and employees are becoming more transient and it is seemingly more difficult to establish a career with longevity. In this talk, we will discuss what a recent graduate can look forward to in various technical career paths, specifically a career in research versus a career in development. I will draw upon personal experience to provide an overview of what a student may expect when entering these careers. Lastly, we will discuss how one can prepare to make the most out of their career choice and handle the volatility of the industry.

Short Bio:  Christopher (Chris) Morris is currently a Fellow Engineer at the Northrop Grumman Corporation where he is a member of the Teton Project team. The team is charged with research and development of Open Architecture (OA) Processing solutions for distributed, real-time, embedded (DRE) systems. Prior to joining Northrop Grumman in 2009, Chris was an Advisory Staff Engineer in the Visualization Systems Group at IBM Research in Westchester County, New York, where he researched and developed distributed rendering and visualization systems.  He holds a BSME from UMBC (`96), a MSME in from Stanford University (`98), and a MSCS from UMBC (`01). Currently, he is a PhD (CS) Candidate at UMBC. His research interests are computer graphics and scientific visualization.

Get a BIG head-start on the next critical step toward an academic career!

With a grant from NIH, in 2011 we launched a brand new approach to assisting the development of young scientists called the Academy for Future Science Faculty. The Academy uses sophisticated coaching techniques to supplement what PhD students get from their research mentors and graduate programs. Students participate in annual summer conferences and stay connected with student colleagues and their Academic Career Coaches throughout the year. The Academy has been designed for students who have the long-term goal of becoming a faculty member. Phase I started in 2011 with 100 students just beginning the PhD. This current announcement for Phase 2 is for students LIKELY TO COMPLETE THEIR PHD WITHIN THE NEXT 12-18 MONTHS. All expenses will be paid so there will be no cost to you.

The Academy is being conducted as a true experiment – 60 students will be RANDOMLY selected to participate from those who apply. Selection will not be based on grades, GRE scores, publications or letters of recommendation. We encourage applications that will help us create a diverse group of participants in terms of race, ethnicity, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, etc.
