This fall, the Center for Social Justice Dialogue is hosting Interact, a series designed to help participants hone the skills to successfully engage in dialogue across difference. If you are a student within WILL+, ILE, any other Living-Learning Communities (LLC) or are just an undergraduate student interested in upscaling your dialogue, register now!

WHAT IS INTERACT?

Interact is a four-week program for undergraduate students focused on creating an introduction to the dialogue skills required to engage in difficult conversations, dialogue across difference, and intercultural dialogue.

The goal of Interact at UMBC is to develop foundational dialogue skills such as critical self-awareness, listening and sharing authentically, asking questions toward creating deep connections, and apologizing and adjusting appropriately, while creating opportunities for participants to become more self-aware. As a result of participation in Interact, participants will have the skills to engage in dialogue within any type of situation and any topic of conversation.

Participants meet weekly in small groups for 90-minute sessions that are co-facilitated by 2-3 facilitators. Each small group consists of 10-15 participants. During these sessions, participants learn and practice the necessary skills to become inclusive leaders and engaged community members.

Participants who attend at least three of the four sessions will be entered into a raffle to win prizes such as a PORTABLE PROJECTOR and WEIGHTED BLANKET!

Student Belonging (formerly known as Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion, & Belonging, or i3b) in the Division of Student Affairs has hosted celebration ceremonies for Latinx, Black, and LGBTQIA+ / queer students for several years. This year, we are excited to add the Asian Cultural Celebration & Awards to the lineup. These three affinity events will honor and celebrate the achievements of UMBC's outstanding community members and graduating students.

Graduates will also have the chance to share details about their achievements and degrees. Graduates who RSVP by Monday, April 28th at 6 PMwill be recognized during the event and will receive honorary graduation cords. Each event has its own RSVP form, so please refer to the specific event pages for details on dress code, arrival times, and other event-related information.

UMBC's 3rd Annual Pride Week will take place April 7th through April 11th, 2025!
This year's theme: There's Power in Queer Joy

This is an open call for events from any campus partner, and events can cater to any population at UMBC including students (must include both undergraduate and graduate in student events), faculty, staff, alumni, campus affiliates, or community partners.

This form will be open from Wednesday, February 5th through Friday, February 28th for submissions.  If you would like to submit an event after that date please contact Darcie Adams directly at dadams4@umbc.edu.

After submissions close, we will review all submissions to check for date/time overlap with the same proposed populations, do a check to ensure all events are relevant in some way to Pride Week, and send out confirmations to primary contacts.

TRAXXX: Black Queer Nightlife in High Fidelity, featuring madison moore, Kristy la rAt and lighting by Artemis, is an invitation for you to come and catch the beat. Black queer dance floors have always served something else — a vibrant and vibrating antidote to the here and now. The most important clubs in Black queer nightlife history, from The Warehouse (Chicago) to Paradise Garage (New York) were known for serving ovah beats, guiding clubbers eager to ride waveforms to other dimensions. What do these frequencies of Black queerness make possible? The performance will include a conversation with artist and DJ Kristy la rAt and lighting by Artemis. 


madison moore is an artist-scholar, DJ, and Assistant Professor of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University. madison (any pronouns)  holds a PhD in American Studies from Yale and has previously held positions in the Roski School of Art and Design at the University of Southern California, Virginia Commonwealth University, The New School, the University of Richmond and King’s College London, and has also been a visiting guest artist in the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale. He is broadly invested in the aesthetic, sonic and spatial strategies queer and trans people of color use to both survive and thrive in the five alarm fire of everyday life. His first book Fabulous: The Rise of the Beautiful Eccentric (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2018), offers a cultural analysis of fabulousness as a practice of resistance. They are currently working on a second book project, HOW TO GET YOUR (NIGHT) LIFE (under contract, Yale University Press), focused on Black queer nightlife as a method of living.


This event is open to all UMBC community members including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Light refreshments will be provided at 7:15 p.m. in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building Atrium for attendees who RSVP on myUMBC.

As we prepare for the semester, we would like to share our hours for the Fall. Below you will find the operational hours of these spaces. *Please note that space hours might shift based on staff availability, reservations, and event times*

Regular Fall Hours Begin Thursday, 08/31 and end on Study Day, Wednesday, 12/13.

  • Weekends: Closed
  • Holiday Closures:Labor Day: 09/04; Thanksgiving: 11/23; American Indian Heritage Day: 11/24
  • Final's Week: Hours will be posted in late November.
  • Wednesday, August 30th: The Mosaic & The Pride Center will open at 1:00pm; The Gathering Space will operate under normal hours.

You may have noticed that the group page that served as the i3b group page has reverted back to its original owner, The Mosaic: Center for Cultural Diversity. In an effort to improve our targeted engagement, data, and assessment, our department has made the decision to create individual myUMBC pages for each center and the i3b department.
