<Title>Researcher of the Week: Sigfredo Soto</Title>
    <Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

          <div class="html-content"><p>Meet Sigfredo,</p>
<p>He is a <a href="http://physics.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Physics</a> major and an <a href="http://ur.umbc.edu/ura/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">URA</a> Scholar. Sigfredo transferred from Anne Arundel Community College with an Associates of Arts in Communications. He is an advocate for undergraduate research. "Take the opportunity if you can find it. It is eye opening and satisfying when you reach personal milestones. Find a mentor that you feel comfortable with. Take it as seriously as you would school work."</p>
<p>His research explores the skies above and is trying to understand the current mismatch between our observational and theoretical capabilities in the effort to understand the gamma-ray variable emission of blazars coming from the vicinity of a black hole. The goal of his research is to develop realistic numerical simulations to model the variable gamma-ray emission of luminous blazars, powerful relativistic jets emanating from the vicinity of the supermassive black holes found in the centers of active galaxies.  </p>

Cancer is a disease arising from a variety of sub-clonal tumor cells dynamically interacting within themselves and the surrounding environment. Sub-clonal tumor heterogeneity is a relatively new aspect of cancer, and its understanding is essential for the development of cancer therapeutics. To better understand the dynamics of sub-clonal tumor heterogeneity, we developed a computational framework to construct non-spatial, dynamic mathematical models of tumor heterogeneity. </div><div><br></div><div>Read more about her research here…</div><div><br></div></div>

If research is in your future, Himadri recommends getting started in the process early on so that you have enough time to get involved in a lab, learn and discover if research is your passion. Her future plans are to pursue a career as a physician, possibly specializing in the field of Neurology.</p><p>Her research involves in examining stress-induced analgesia (SIA), the phenomenon in which exposure to intense stress suppresses the perception of pain. From an evolutionary perspective, SIA is part of the adaptive fight-or-flight response mediated by the sympathetic nervous system that enhances an individual’s ability to survive a crisis situation; pain suppression is a critical component of this response as it enables individuals to escape a threat even if they have sustained an injury.</p><p>Read more about her research here…</p></div>
